"Most of us began our journey into faith with trusting hearts. Yet incidents of abuse, media accounts of perverted religion, personal disappointment, loss, betrayal, and even unrealistic expectations of God can cause us to develop a warped or damaged view of faith. Too often, what began as an authentic relationship with God deteriorates into a defective faith with an incomplete or poisoned view of God — one that allows the religion, not the relationship with God, to control our life." Stephen Arterburn

"Spiritual abuse occurs when someone in a position of spiritual authority, the purpose of which is to 'come underneath' and serve, build, equip and make God's people MORE free, misuses that authority placing themselves over God's people to control, coerce or manipulate them for seemingly Godly purposes which are really their own." Jeff VanVonderen

A British chap named Dan, who is a blogging friend of TWW, commented early this morning. He, too, has a blog, and occasionally I check in as I did this morning. His current post alerted me to a thought-provoking article at Desiring God entitled: “What cautions do you have for the New Reformed Movement?”

Our post “UNDER CEEJ – Why the Impersonation of C.J. Mahaney is NO LAUGHING MATTER” drew some interesting comments. An SGM loyalist who goes by the moniker “I think you exaggerate…” challenged my claims against SGM. I have decided to respond to his/her questions.

A Christian Bumpkin met a Lumpkin on the road to Oz
Said the Bumpkin to the Lumpkin, "Would you kindly pause?
Could you please explicate the meaning of exonerate?
So that the pounding in my pate, you may help alleviate?"
Said the Lumpkin to the Bumpkin, "Sir, I have no time.
A Caner said some silly things and some say it’s a crime.
For Caner I must formulate excuses they will tolerate.
Allowing us to obfuscate and forever more to exculpate."
And so the Bumpkin left the Lumpkin to find a better way

I was in New York City on the day the Southern Baptist Convention convened in Orlando, so I wasn't able to watch the live feed like so many others. My husband and I took our daughter to the Big Apple so she could participate in the New York Tribeca summer project sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ. She is spending five weeks on college campuses sharing her faith with those who do not know Jesus Christ and encouraging those who do. We are overjoyed that our rising college senior is so passionate about her faith when so many in her age group are closing the door to Christianity. To God be the glory!

How many times during my decade of membership in the SBC did I hear my pastors encourage the congregation's giving along these lines: "Remember that when you place your contribution in the offering plate, you are supporting the Cooperative Program…" It was always stated in such an affirming way that my husband and I were happy to be combining our financial gifts with fellow Southern Baptists in order to fulfill the Great Commission.

Until last year, Dee and I were members of different Southern Baptist churches. Each of us spent almost a decade fully supporting the SBC. We were just “going with the flow” like so many of our brothers and sisters in Christ. During that time we were completely oblivious to the issues we discuss here at The Wartburg Watch. Then Almighty God got our attention…

The pharisees minded what God spoke, but not what He intended. They were busy in the outward work of the hand, but incurious of the affections and choice of the heart. So God was served in the letter, they did not much inquire into His purpose; and therefore they were curious to wash their hands, but cared not to purify their hearts. Jeremy Taylor

A political programme can never in reality be more than probably right. We never know all the facts about the present and we can only guess the future. To attach to a party programme – whose highest real claim is to reasonable prudence – the sort of assent which we should reserve for demonstrable theorems, is a kind of intoxication. C S Lewis
