Prayer from Augustine, 354-430 link

 Look upon us, O Lord,
and let all the darkness of our souls
vanish before the beams of thy brightness.
Fill us with holy love,
and open to us the treasures of thy wisdom.
All our desire is known unto thee,
therefore perfect what thou hast begun,
and what thy Spirit has awakened us to ask in prayer.
We seek thy face,
turn thy face unto us and show us thy glory.
Then shall our longing be satisfied,
and our peace shall be perfect.
Amen

Mozarbic Passion Prayer link

(The Mozarabs were Christians who lived in Spain under Islamic rule.
The prayers in the Mozarabic Rite are free in style and substantial in meaning.
Most of the prayers also seem to be very direct in presenting gospel content.
They are also very consciously biblical. link)

Jesus, our Lord and our God,
you gave your cheek to those who struck you
and for our sake you endured much mockery.
Grant that following the example of your sufferings,
we may be courageous in bearing our own,
and learn from you,
for you are meek and lowly in heart;
you now reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen

THE APOSTLES CREED link

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;
Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into Hell;
The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting.
Amen

A Celtic Blessing link

Deep peace of the Running Wave to you.
Deep peace of the Flowing Air to you.
Deep peace of the Quiet Earth to you.
Deep peace of the Shining Stars to you.
Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
Amen

    Thank you, Dee. This is encouraging.

    Prof. Su does not mention this, but I’m sure that he would agree that our status as “made in the image of God” is also a ground for a sense of intrinsic dignity. This is sometimes phrased in terms of the idea that the Creator does not make “junk.”

    —-

    The idea that we are loved by the Creator ought to inspire a sense of reverence in our dealings with other people, who are also loved by the Creator (one gets the sense that Prof. Su expresses this in the way he relates to his students). This comes up in OT texts such as Pv 17:5, “Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker.” How much more those who mistreat/exploit/abuse people for their own purposes; they are IMO described by Romans 3:18, “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

    Thank you Dee. I appreciated Prof. Su’s talk and testimony. And, nothing better than the simplicity of a Michael Card song to end the service
