(2/2) Johnny Hunt’s Ill-Advised Attempt at Exoneration Reminds Me of the Time He Said He Was a Regular User of Ravi Zacharias’s Massage Parlors.

Johnny Hunt-Wikipedia

There are a dozen views about everything until you know the answer. Then there’s never more than one. C. S. Lewis

In the following story by Baptist News Global’s Mark Wingfield, Johnny Hunt tells his side of the story, including his definition of ‘adultery.’When we last left Johnny Hunt, he was vacationing in Florida, surrounded by four good friends who restored him to ministry.

But Johnny wanted to do more than rest on his laurels or lack thereof. He wanted to let us know that Guidepost Solutions was wrong when they claimed he abused a woman. He admitted to improper conduct. Former SBC President Johnny Hunt admits to improper conduct but denies abuse claims.

It appears our faithful biblical expositor wishes to let us know that he disagreed with various interpretations of his actions in a beachside condo in 2010. I wonder if the four who restored him suggested that this journey to exoneration might not be wise.

I haven’t laughed this hard at him since he said he was a “regular customer” at Ravi Zacharias’s massage parlors. (See Steven Baughman’s short video.)

I shall leave you with some quotes and a suggestion to read the story.

  • he sees a difference between “adultery” and being “unfaithful” to one’s wife. It is only adultery, he says, if there is sexual intercourse involved.
  • Questioner (Q): “So I want to be clear, you think in order for there to be sexual abuse, there has to be intercourse? Under a legal definition?
  • Johnny Hunt (JH): “That would be part of it.”
  • JH: “Adultery is a man that is married and he has sexual intercourse with someone other than his wife.”
  • Q: So Bill Clinton did not commit adultery?”
  • JH: “I don’t know his story.”
  • Q: “If it did not result in sexual intercourse, which we will define as a man’s penis being inserted into a women’s vagina … .”At this point, Hunt’s attorney interrupts to challenge the questioning.JH:  “To be unfaithful, to me, in my heart, would have been to have gone to another lady’s room. But that is not adultery.”
  • Q: ” So you could be unfaithful by going to a woman — not your wife’s — room and kiss her and that is not adultery?”
  • JH: “That’s not adultery.”
  • JH “I have never kissed her lips in my life. I have never touched her lips, so help me God.”
  • Q: “And you did not awkwardly fondle her?”
  • JH: “I did awkwardly fondle her because she was coming on to me.”

Hunt does the manly thing by claiming it was her fault. That’s why he was “awkwardly” fondling her breasts. Johnny Hunt is just one more SBC pastor who got caught. His explanations were ridiculous, and he should go away and pray that he would not further harm the Gospel.

I read the article a couple of days ago, and, oh Dee, you’ve barely scraped the surface.

I strongly recommend that all TWW reader follow the link and read the article in its entirety! It sounds to me like he’s trying to convince everyone that he was sexually assaulted!

….. She came after him…. lowered her top……. Guideposts ‘ambushed’ him ……

    elastigirl,

    Did you see this part:
The attorney asks: Do you employ any of (your children) through your various business entities?” Hunt responds, “No, ma’am. No.”

Even Hunt’s grandchildren work for the family businesses and non-profits.

Finally, there is proof that my friend Geoff Hammond was removed from NAMB for reasons other than those alleged at the time. This is from Baptist News Global in May 2023 –

“ Despite NAMB’s stated conflict of interest policy, the SBC operates within an ecosystem of trust that allows decisions to be made based on personal relationships and recommendations. High-profile pastors carry great influence.

By the accounts of multiple insiders, NAMB’s second president, Geoff Hammond, who served only two years before being forced out by the same trustee board that had hired him, reportedly threatened Hunt’s influence at the missions agency. At the time of Hammond’s abrupt resignation in 2009, Hunt was SBC president, which made him an ex-officio member of NAMB’s trustee board.

Hunt reportedly used that influence to collaborate with others who wanted Hammond removed.

Less than a year later, NAMB trustees named a new president, Kevin Ezell, who had closer ties to Hunt and hired him as the agency’s senior vice president.

From that moment, Hunt’s constellation of family enterprises appear to have been back in business at NAMB and within the SBC.”

    It’s a small world.

So does he not have the fruit of the Spirit which is self control, or is he to manly of a man to resist a woman? Way to go Adam, I mean Johnny Hunt (hunt the women), for blaming her. You should prevent all women from coming to your church just to be safe. And Elastigirl: I could not agree with you more!

  12. Notice: Undefined variable: button in /home/guswo2wr8yyv/public_html/tww2/wp-content/plugins/quote-comments/quote-comments.php on line 127

Where do these guys get the idea that if a woman comes on to them and they respond with anything other than getting the heck out of there, she is to blame? (I am NOT buying that she came on to him, but for argument’s sake what if she did?)

I am married and have had men other than my husband come on to me emotionally, and physically. I left the premises immediately and avoided them in the future. My husband has had other women come on to him emotionally and physically, and immediately left the premises and avoided them in the future.

If you are married, is does not matter if you are not the one who initiated some sort of off base relationship. It does matter how you handle it. A woman could strip bare and start doing all she could to entice a man and if he is a decent man, like Joseph, he flees. And if she catches ahold of his clothing he may leave streaking but HE STILL FLEES. He doesn’t awkwardly enjoy a taste of hanky panky before he runs. He just flees.

There are many forms of adulterous affairs. They can be as simple as forming an emotional bond outside your marriage that is closer or more important than the one in your marriage, aka the emotional affair. It can be only a little hugsy kissy and no farther, but that is still a physical affair. Or it can be a full blown real deal affair with intercourse.

All are sinful. And no Christian should engage in any of them, especially someone who aspires to leadership. They are disqualifying. Let them go sack groceries.

** he sees a difference between “adultery” and being “unfaithful” to one’s wife. It is only adultery, he says, if there is sexual intercourse involved. **

That’s kind of funny, since guys in his line of work often contend that a wife is “committing adultery” if she doesn’t meet all her husband’s sexual “needs,” no matter how weird.

On the other hand, I also think that only sex outside your (or the other party’s) marriage is adultery, as opposed all the other sins against chastity, which are other stuff: fornication, lust, sexual battery, etc.

Hell Low Wartburglers! Satin Son of Stan stopping in for a little accusing of the brethren.
But first, a bit of excusing. I totally buy his story about not technically breaking suggestion #7 as he defines it. That’s his story, and he has 105 million reasons to stick to it.
I do accuse him of breaking #8. After he fled from Potiphar’s wife, he went on an extended vacation without mentioning the real reason to the plate-fillers. If he was still being paid, it sounds just like stealing — only Christian!
Then there’s suggestion 9. Pastor Johnny has had a hard time, until now sticking to his story.
Suggestion 10? Coveting his neighbor’s wife? Well maybe it wasn’t coveting if he only kissed her breasts and not her lips…

    elastigirl,

I’ll stick to Scripture and the parsing thereof.
This is from The Larger Catechism: A Commentary by Johannes G Vos, Q 3 ‘What is the Word of God?’, Commentary point 8. – What is wrong with saying that conscience is our guide for faith and conduct? – “The human conscience cannot tell a person what to believe or how to live. It cannot tell a person what is right and what is wrong. The conscience can only tell a person whether or not he is acting according to what he already believes to be right…..The conscience can only indicate whether a person’s conduct is in accordance with his beliefs; it cannot tell him whether his beliefs are true or not. Therefore the conscience cannot be the rule for faith and life.”

The shorter answer of course is that you missed the point of my original comment and demonstrated why Europeans think that Americans don’t get irony. If you place your hope in conscience then you are hanging your hat on a “shoogly nail”. So let’s get back to Johnny Hunt and not be sidetracked any further.

shall i list all the ways people have parsed scripture so that cruelty, self-interest and what causes harm, let alone stupidity, are deemed true?

perhaps i need to rephrase my point that while johnny hunt makes stuff up about word definitions & biblical morality & ethics,

to pretend his conscience is clean,

people outside the christian bubble recognize what it means to not betray their partner as easily as see spot run.

Bonus: they manage to be very successful, without being preoccupied with what’s true and not true, let alone their conscience.

Wilberforce couldn’t abolish the slave trade (and slavery) directly, but, he and others did work hard to get it abolished. Wilberforce unlike many of the other British abolitionists (women, Quakers, Unitarians) was eligible to be a member of Parliament and was elected and worked hard as a major public leader of the abolitionist movement. Other major leaders included Thomas Clarkson and Granville Sharp. John Woolman though an American Quaker was also an important early leader in getting the British Quakers into abolition.

I also note that if anything using scripture to justify slavery increased in the decades up to the American Civil War.

Way back in 2009 Dee wrote a thoughtful, comprehensive summary of Calvin and Calvinism and its resurgence in modern day America. It got one comment from TrinityWatcher referring the reader to internet monk.

In 2010 Deb wrote about Jim Packer – “The Last Puritan” – and again it was fairly comprehensive and balanced. It raised a number of interesting points.

In 2011 I came across TWW by chance. The conversation was about complementarianism and Doug Wilson. I added my tuppence worth and so began a lengthy and occasional correspondence.. I was sanctioned three times over the years but was always allowed back. It was good, informative and relevant. Dee has done a lot of good work highlighting the many problems that exist within the church visible.

in all my activities and dealing with human beings in many diverse realms near & far,

in cities & suburbs, on rapid transit, in Wal-mart & Target, in the occasional eatery (don’t eat out much),

99% of the people i observe, interact with, and know personally are kind, patient, generous, self-sacrificing, caring about others, helping strangers, making an effort to be friendly & charitable to strangers.

it gives me great happiness to recognize this and celebrate the magnificence of human beings just as I celebrate their Maker who put a deposit of Himself (i think God transcends gender) in each one.

i can also celebrate scripture & recognize its inherent good, while also recognizing its inherent potential dangers.

what’s a deal-breaker about any of my views?

surely you and i have more to agree on than disagree.

SBC Church Leader womanizer Johnny Hunt, Christian Music and Filmmaker pedophile Steve Greisen, and Actor Pedophile Preacher Don Logan probably all know their Bibles well. But they certainly don’t have a blessed clue about God, our Creator.

The constituencies of the SBC church leader womanizer, the Christian Music & Filmmaker Pedophile, and the Actor Pastor Pedophile all assume they know these three criminal felons well. Actually, their constituents don’t have a blessed clue about who they really are: the SBC Christian Church leader womanizer, the Christian Film & Music Maker Pedophile, and the Actor Pastor Pedophile.

P.S. There used to be two archetypes of Antichrist: The Fanatic Persecutor (“anti” in the sense of “against”) and The Slick Deceiver (“anti” in the sense of “imitation”).

And it always struck me that the two could easily work together as a tag team:
Fleeing the Fanatic Persecutor, you find safety in the protection of (and take the Mark of) the Slick Deceiver.

Today, all you hear from the Rapture Ready crowd is The Fanatic Persecutor; The Slick Deceiver has been completely forgotten. (Maybe it hits too close to home?) Convenient, My Dear Wormwood.
