I saw a problem with Don Logan, but Logan’s associate pastors and BFFs did not.
Sometimes, I get discouraged that what I believe to be newsworthy does not seem to get coverage in the media. That was the case with this post {Update 5.30.24} Don Logan, Pastor of Eternal Church, SC, Is a Convicted Felon For Sexual Misconduct With a Minor. The Elders Say He Is “Above Reproach.” I Disagree.
Logan was sentenced to 3 years as a guest of the Indiana prison system for a criminal felony that involved sexual misconduct with a teen 14-16 years old. I stress. He did spend time in prison. What shocked me the most was being told by the Executive Pastor, Chad Hollowell, that the actions that led to his imprisonment were not “serious” because there is a “wide spectrum of these things.” Whatever that means…So, some pastor in SC is now an expert who knows more than the folks who imprisoned him in Indiana? This response is deserving of a red flag.
I spoke with Chad Hollowell, the Executive Pastor of Eternal Church. I give him kudos for taking my call. Here is what he told me.
- The leaders do not feel that sexual sin with a minor permanently disqualifies Logan from the pulpit.
- The leaders examined his life over the past 20 years and believes he is above reproach.
- They believe he is of proven character.
- His story is an example of the grace of God.
- He said he could not share with me the details of Logan’s conviction becasue that is his story to tell.
- He said his actions which lead to his prison sentence were not “serious” since there is a wide spectrum in this “sort of thing.”
- He believes the congregation was told about his criminal background when Logan was hired but was a bit vague on the extent of knowledge in the membership.(I suspect it is not widespread.)
After reading this excerpt from a letter from a “nonperpetual leader,” it appeared that not everyone knew about Logan’s past.
I wasn’t aware of his story, but because we have perpetual Elders, there wasn’t a need for me to know. The original 8 elders (minus 1 who has passed away) are still leading our church today. It is a personal story of the humbling, redemptive work Christ did in his life, which has required discernment by Don in when and how to share it, always with the concern that it be used to show God’s faithfulness and redemption to others.
However, the following made me realize that this elder, making an excuse for having a pastor who has the hots for a young teen, is clueless. Imagine thinking that a man who has the hots for a teen is safeguarding himself by simply applying the “Billy Graham rule” by never meeting privately with a female will “solve” the problem. Have these guys ever heard of paraphilias? It is not normal for an adult to molest a teen. Have they ever done serious reading, or is it all about “discerning what God is saying?” Do they think God ever speaks through the talented people who research these issues at the NIH? Perhaps this post will help them to “discern” the problem.
Since this event 27 years ago, Don has taken careful steps to safeguard himself including disclosure with elders and pastors on staff and never meeting privately with a female.Others, including his wife, have confirmed all of this as well.
Imagine the surprise of church members when they found out he went to prison.
Church, ask why your elders (perpetual or otherwise) didn’t let you know. Who’s running the ship over there?
I was thrilled when the Fort Mill Sun wrote the following article. Local Family Shocked to Discover Their Pastor is on Sex Offender Registry. It appears that some church members are not quite so accepting of Logan as an acceptable choice for a pastor. They are out of there.
Mrs. Cummings found her lead pastor on the list of registered sex offenders in York County, with the website listing his offense as a 1997 conviction in Indiana for sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl.
Now, Cory and Dana Cummings and their four children are searching for a new church and warning the public that Eternal Church has not been transparent enough about Pastor Don’s past.
Is Eternal Church really a light on the hill, or do they hide under a bushel?
Do you remember the Bible verses about being a light on the hill? Matthew 14-16 NIV.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
The elders and pastor are not so sure they want to be a light to the world. They refused to speak to the press. Imagine the missed opportunity to display their faith…
For their part, the church elders indicated that they are aware of his past. They declined to speak on the record in the past five days or make the pastor available, asking for additional time to provide an interview.
Is it normal for an adult male to have a sexual interest in young teens? Isn’t acting on that impulse also a crime?
But they applied “Christianese” to email their members.
A church email said Pastor Don recently shared a message “about how the Lord interrupted his life during a season of sinfulness many years ago and how God used that time to capture his heart and transform him.”
What doesn’t that email speak about? It says nothing about the problem of an adult man who has the “hots” for a young girl. This is not normal. Most men, when they want to sin, do so with a consenting adult. Most men don’t wish to have sexual contact with a young teen. This has nothing to do with “interrupting a season of sinfulness,” folks. It might be wise to address the possibility that the pastor has a paraphilia, which should be addressed. Has he received serious counseling for this possibility? Perhaps he believes his actions, which caused him to be imprisoned, indicate normal behavior for an adult man.
This wasn’t just a “season of sinfulness.” It was also a crime punishable by imprisonment and should never be glossed over. He is on the sex offender registry, and that should be serious enough for everyone.
The church is entering a period of discernment, which may be Christianese for “Let’s ease the membership into this since we are not going to let him go.”
Christian Leaders wrote South Carolina Pastor Revealed To Be Registered Sex Offender; Elders Say They Knew.
In a follow-up email, church members were told that the church had entered “a discernment period which has involved prayer, quiet reflection, consulting Scripture, open dialogue as a church family, processing as individuals and in groups, and discussion among elders, pastors, and staff.”
I had to smile at the following statement. Has the die been cast? Has the result been prospectively decided?
Although the “discernment period” is “ongoing,” Logan is continuing to fill Eternal Church’s pulpit. He can be seen preaching at the church as recently as Sunday, June 30.
Church Leaders looked for a response but didn’t get it from this church, which would probably claim it wants to be a light on the hill for the Charlotte/Ft Mills area.

What does Biblical restoration mean?
When I spoke with the Executive pastor, I told him that when the young pastor assaulted that teen, the pastor wanted sexual contact more than his pastor credentials. He gave them up that day. Read the Bible. Here’s how the process goes.
- The person who does something this grievous should be first excommunicated from the church.
- If he shows continued remorse and repentance, he can be restored to the Body of Christ, not the pulpit. They seem to leapfrog over this step.
- Then, if he continues, he is restored to communion.
Those are the steps for all who commit grievous sins. There isn’t one of going back to the pulpit. The pastor now becomes a member of the pewsitters club.
Let me tell you about a pastor who I love and respect. He committed adultery, and the woman sued the church. He stepped down and then had a time when he met with all of the church members so they could express their anger and frustration at his actions directly to his face. He then entered a time of church discipline after repenting. He would appear at church each week, sit in the congregation, and take notes on all the sermons. Over an extended period, he began to be asked to pastor other churches. He refused. He said that he did not belong back in the pulpit. Instead, he teaches small classes within his original church. I have attended it many times, and much of what I think comes directly from his teaching. His humility is challenging.
He was a pastor who did it well. He knew he should give it up, but Don Logan won’t. It is fascinating how people use the Bible to justify their wants. I think “someone” once said that remembering old sins is from Satan and the demons. I beg to differ. Remembering one’s crimes is one way to recognize and avoid repeating them.
Finally,
I do not believe that any pastor who violated his vows in order to assault an underage teen female should be serving as a pastor in any church. There are other beautiful options. For example, he could always minister in prisons or halfway houses with adults. He could be a light on the hill in many organizations, but it takes a whole load of humility.

I have been conversing with an elder at Eternal Church whom I consider a good friend whom I have known for over 30 years. He was not involved in the calling of Don Logan. Clearly the elders believe that Don Logan is now a man of great character. But Logan’s character NOW has no bearing to the issue at hand.
I left this message on Eternal’s Facebook Page:
“To the elders of Eternal Church: I know you love your pastor and believe that he is a “changed man” since his child sexual misconduct conviction for which he pled guilty in 1997. I urge you to seek the counsel of those outside your nondenominational church. Perhaps speak to those at Westminster PCA Rock Hill. You have violated 1 Tim 3:7 by installing one who clearly does not have a good reputation. Consider the timing of the exposing of Pastor Don’s crime. We are now in the Post-Gateway era. The elders at Gateway claim ignorance of the nature of Robert Morris abuse of Cindy Clemishire. How much worse in the public’s view is knowingly hiring a convicted child abusing pastor? The next steps need to be repentance, the removal of Logan, rebuking of those in the congregation who are attacking the whistleblower, and a time of mourning for what has transpired.”
I believe that what happens between now and Sunday 9:00 am will have effects that go far beyond this local church. I urge the elders to come off of their island and seek the wise counsel of the greater Body of Christ. All who read this please pray.

It’s not reassuring to think that, if he were ever alone with a “female,” he would, of course, try to have sex with her or grope her or whatever. A person who can’t go through life interacting normally with people of both sexes is not a person who has been transformed.
“Safeguard himself” is also interesting language, as if someone is threatening him – those dangerous “females”? – rather than his being a threat to others.

Do church “leaders” realize how dangerous this position is! I sure hope they don’t have any influence on other churches on how to behave as a Board of Elders. They will find no examples in the New Testament to back their view; they will find no passages of Scripture regarding pastors restored to the pulpit after abusing a child … but, they will find Jesus’ warning about such transgression.
How many pastors/staff with undetected sins/crimes of this nature across America now take comfort in their unBiblical stand? If child sexual abuse is not a permanent disqualifier from Christian ministry, what is?! Forgive the abuser if he repents? Certainly. Restore him to ministry? Absolutely not! There are other places for the truly repentant to serve in the Body of Christ … but, in this case, under close supervision. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God … but child abuse by a church leader should not be thrown into the sin-leveling bucket, in my humble but accurate opinion.

Thank you for writing that comment on Eternal’s Facebook page. It was very well said. Will they listen? They have a problem. They made a mistake that is evident to just about everyone outside of the situation. That means they have to change their thought process to do the right thing. So many people will not do so, believing it is an admission of guilt. Yet we are Christians, and we are all flawed. It is a testament to our faith when we can say we have screwed up.

Can God change a person even with a paraphilia? Of course He can. Miracles are just that, God doing the impossible.
Should a person who believes God has changed them still avoid the situations that could lead to a fall? Of course they should, and should never be ridiculed with questions like “Why if God has changed you?” One can trust God and still be wise.
But all that said, their previous actions forever disqualify them from the ministry. Not from being saved, being in fellowship with Jesus, or spending eternity with God in bliss.
But their actions have permanently put the clergy role out of reach, and they have permanently become the person no one is going to trust.
God forgives. God sometimes does cleanse hearts perfectly. Consequences still apply.

Subject: Praying for you to do the right thing
I am so sad at what has transpired at Eternal Church. One of the problems of a nondenominational church is the dangers inherent in a lack of accountability of a small number of elders. The leadership of Eternal Church needs to seek guidance from the larger Body of Christ.
I see God’s providence at work in this situation. Eternal leaves the PCA and loses accountability. You move to SC, one of the most strict states when it comes to sex offender registration. A clergy abuse victim who starts attending Eternal stumbles upon your past conviction on a Baptist Accountability website. This results in your needing to register as a sex offender. Then this fact is published on a small Christian victim advocate blog. Then this same blog breaks the news of the issue at Gateway with Robert Morris. This gives the small blog national attention. And now we are at a crossroads.
Don, you are apparently loved by your elders and many in the congregation. But you and the elders have sinned by violating 1 Tim. 3:7, which requires an elder to have a good reputation with outsiders, the last and most important qualification. The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: “When a leader in the church has a bad reputation in the community, it often brings irreparable damage to the local congregation and indeed to the entire cause of Christ.”
At a minimum, to avoid further damage, the elders need to admit fault this Sunday and repent. You also need to resign and leave pastoral ministry. The members of the congregation who have attacked the whistleblowers need to be publicly rebuked.
I plead with you, as a fellow Christian, that you take these steps for the good of Christ’s bride. If you love our Savior you will not continue to bring shame upon Him, upon Eternal Church, upon the church at large, and upon yourself and your family. You and Eternal have fallen into disgrace and a snare of the devil.

Awesome point. When I worked in the phaatmaceutical industry, I had to meet with my male and female bosses, travel with my coworkers and take male clients out to dinner. It was exected that I do this and I enjoyed my ability to speak with both men and women as needed/

I don’t understand why a group of elders don’t get this! Child sex abuse by a church leader is permanent disqualification from the sacred office of pastor. To have a registered sex offender on church staff is a stumbling block for members of the church and community. The elders failed the church with this decision.

Some also have the illusion that a grown man preacher violating a child is just another slip-up sin like any other. No.
Nothing could be further from the truth. What we know:
1. It’s sin. Yes, but that’s only the beginning.
2. It’s a felony crime. It requires s*x offender registration because it is a criminal abnormality that keeps on producing more victims.
3. It’s a psychological disorder, hence the offender registration.
4. It’s not normal, hence the offender registration requirement.
5. Normal people don’t do this.
6. Normal people don’t even think this way, don’t fantasize this, don’t entertain this via computer. Ever. Even the idea makes a normal person sick.
7. To the normal person, even the thought of any grown-*ss adult going after any child for s*x is not only disgusting, disturbing, and just plain wrong, it is cringeworthy HORRIFYING and TERRIFYING. Sheer terror. NOT “playing around” or “hanky-panky” or “an organic moment” or “the kid was after me” or “the kid came on to me” or “the kid was flirtatious” or “the kid asked for / wanted it”. Normal people NEVER EVER think this way or talk this way.
Church, STOP THE HORROR FILM perpetrated by an illusion happening right in your own places among your own people.
A grown man preacher who has violated a minor is NOT normal. This is far beyond sin. Repentance with restitution (like Zacchaeus, the fruit of repentance) never addresses the sheer abnormality of this horrible psycho dysfunction. FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood’s research reveals that underlying fantasies always precede s*xual deviancy. There’s more to this behavior than what we see. Treating pedophilia as any other “sin” is a gross and highly uninformed mistake, IOW, delusional.
Church, stop throwing 2-bit cheap grace shallow theology at a major psycho dysfunctional abnormal condition that is dangerous and damaging to the targeted vulnerable victims.
Stop the illusion. Open up eyes to see reality.

I’m a parent from the Charlotte metro community, and my question is: How can the elders defend Don’s failure to register as a sex offender, as required by law, in the state of South Carolina for the 9 years he’s lived here? They have deemed their Pastor Don “restored to ministry” – so does that mean they are of the belief that their “discernment” trumps the requirements of the law?
While I’m hopeful that the Elders of Eternal wake up and do the right thing here, I also hope that the State of South Carolina cracks down on him for illegally living in their state without registering. A quick google search reveals that failure to register has heavy consequences, from fines to more jail time.
It appears that the Elders of Eternal are not equipped to protect their congregants from predators. I would also suggest that they are woefully uneducated about the extreme extent of harm sexual abuse crimes cause the victims. I would never allow my family to attend a church that has such blatant disrespect for the safety of their community.
I saw on the local article linked on Facebook someone mentioned that one of the Elders is also a Fort Mill elementary school principal. If that is true, I’m even more disturbed by this group of “leaders” and their complete lack of wisdom as it pertains to Pastor Don Logan serving in a position of authority. Yuck.

A repentant person is forgiven by Jesus, with the punishment paid in full by Jesus’ Blood.
However, that doesn’t mean that the forgiven person automatically gets to move on with their life as if nothing as happened, with no earthly consequences.
Being a Christian minister means being responsible for people’s spiritual health. It’s a sensitive calling, a calling with a very high degree of responsibility.
Not everyone is qualified to be a minister. Just because someone feels the desire to be a pastor or minister doesn’t automatically mean that they are qualified, and doesn’t automatically mean that God has called them to the ministry.
Being a Christian leader should require a high standard of, and a strong personal reputation for, morality, integrity, and ethics.
Certain crimes make a person disqualified from Christian ministry for life.
One of those crimes is sexual abuse.
While a person who genuinely repents of even the worst and most heinous crimes is forgiven by Jesus and washed clean by Jesus’ Blood, that doesn’t mean that every line of employment is still open to the forgiven sinner.
If a convicted sex offender applies to be a police officer, their application will be rejected.
If a convicted sex offender applies to be a school teacher, their application will be rejected.
Even if they are sincerely repentant and a changed person, there are still earthly consequences for their actions.
The right of children and other vulnerable people to be safe is a much higher priority than the “right” of a convicted sex offender to hold a certain job.
The children, women, and other vulnerable people have a right to be safe.
The convicted sex offender DOESN’T have right to be a police officer, or a teacher, or a Christian pastor.
If the convicted sex offender was truly and sincerely repentant, he would understand this, and would not seek to serve as a Christian minister. Rather, a truly and sincerely repentant sex offender would seek to serve Jesus in other ways.
This case reminds me of a previous case I read about on this website, where a convicted sex offender, upon being released from prison, immediately showed up at a megachurch and sought to work in the children’s ministry. That is NOT the behavior of a sincerely repentant person.
A sincerely repentant person recognizes that their actions have consequences. For the most severe and heinous crimes, these consequences may be lifelong, such as being barred from certain forms of employment.
In Heaven where there is no evil, these restrictions won’t exist.
But here on earth, these restrictions on convicted sex offenders are needed to keep children, women, and other vulnerable people safe. Their safety is the highest priority.
The “right” of convicted sex offenders to hold certain forms of employment is NOT a priority.
Don Logan should do the right thing and resign from the pastorship. The elders that knew about his history but chose to hire him anyway should also resign, or be removed from office by the congregation along with Logan.
As I said above, being a Christian minister should be a solemn, serious, and dignified profession, requiring ministers to have a reputation for strong morality, integrity, and ethics.
Someone with a felony conviction for sexual abuse does NOT meet that standard.
While there have always been problems with predators infiltrating the ministry (after all, we live in a fallen world), I feel that in many ways, the attention-seeking, jeans-and-sneakers-wearing dudebros have cheapened the concept of the terms “pastor”, “reverend”, “minister”, etc.
These days there are churches with 25 year-old pastors (fresh out of Calvinist seminaries) and elders in their twenties, all eager to establish tin-pot empires in their churches and lord it over the lowly parishioners.
There was a time when Christian leaders were expected to be solemn, serious, and dignified.
Nowadays any clownish grifter such as Robert Morris or Mike Bickle or John MacArthur can set themselves up as a “pastor”, with no oversight or accountability.
To be sure, as I mentioned above, there have always been problems with sex predators in ministry. I recently read that the deceased prominent Anglican bishop George Bell was exposed as a pedophile.
I am certainly NOT claiming that everything used to be perfect in the past.
Everyone knows how the Catholic Church, the Church of England, the Southern Baptist Convention, etc have been sweeping sexual abuse under the carpet and covering it up for a very long time.
Having said that, I do think the celebrity dudebro pastor in jeans and sneakers phenomenon of the past 40 years or so has cheapened the idea of what a Christian leader should look like.
We have gone from an era of serious people preaching serious sermons, to the current era where Mark Driscoll and Ed Young Junior rant at the pulpit, engage in cringeworthy publicity stunts, curry favor with the rich and powerful, and hawk “bestselling” gimmicky books which often contain bad advice.
I don’t know whether this is simply an American phenomenon or whether it is present in other countries too.
But I think that American Christianity needs to stop trying to be “cool” and “hip”, and start trying to emulate Jesus Christ and follow Jesus’ Teachings.
And Jesus Christ is extremely clear that the safety and wellbeing of children, women, and vulnerable people is of utmost importance.

The “oh, the pedophile pastor is forgiven, everything is fine, time to move on” mentality is not only dangerous, it is insulting to the victims.
It makes light of the horrors that the victims were subjected to, and basically sends the message to the victims that “what happened to you isn’t a big deal, get over it.”
In addition to protecting children from abuse, it should be a very high priority for the victims to feel that they are loved and cared about, and that the abuse they suffered is not being taken lightly or callously dismissed.
Allowing sex offenders to be Christian ministers sends the wrong message to the victims, and makes them feel like the Christian community doesn’t care about them.
It sends the message that it’s more important for the lofty pastor to be able to move on with his life and continue business as usual, than it is for the victims to receive justice.
Even worse, it is likely to make victims incorrectly believe that since the Christian community doesn’t care about the victims, Jesus doesn’t care about them either.
Of course that is TOTALLY and UTTERLY FALSE. Jesus absolutely loves and cares about the victims. Jesus would trade places with the victims in an instant, and suffer all the pain and trauma they suffer in their place. Jesus is above all a God who loves and cares for the downtrodden and mistreated.
The tendency of the earthly Christian church to minimize and trivialize sexual abuse and cover it up is a grievous sin against God, because it is likely to lead the victims to incorrectly think that God doesn’t care about them, and thus walk away from God.
I pray that all victims of sex abuse by “Christian” leaders will understand that these evil men (and the evil men who cover up their crimes) are NOT true Christians and do NOT represent Jesus Christ.

From what I’ve gathered through the years here at TWW, most of the stuff you expose, sex abuse, and just church abuse in general , seems to be confined to big EVA (evangelicalism), and independent church bodies run by autocrats.
So far as I’ve heard and read, the protestant mainlines (Lutheran, Baptist, etc.) don’t suffer from this malaise like big EVA and the independents do.
That’s not to say it doesn’t exist in the smaller outfits, but still, it would appear that it’s nowhere near what happens in big EVA.

I am in fact a Rochester Yellowjacket, class of ’78 (BA Economics) and ’79 (MBA Public Accounting). Ran Track and Cross Country for five years.
I stayed for both services. I had a chance encounter after the first service with Josh, the Pastor of Families. We chit chatted and I mentioned that I was there to get an eyewitness report. I mentioned TWW and he said that the “press” shouldn’t be at the worship service, and advised me to go to the media section of the church website to get information. He said I was not to “interview” anyone, and that the church was “private property” — a little concerning to me, since we were about five feet from three police officers 🙁
So I waited around for the second service. At the end of the service we were asked to form into small groups to pray. I awkwardly did this with a couple in the first service and was the only one to pray. I prayed that the elders would repent of their hiring and covering for a child sex offender. Then I prayed for Julie Sale who has been blamed for bringing this abomination into the light.
At the end of the second service when it came to prayer time, I politely declined once and then a second time when another man tapped me on the shoulder. This led to a 45 minute discussion with a member.

I assume you saw the sermon, Smith smith? If so, you would have seen the passage about the body being made up of many members. These folks are my spiritual brothers and sisters. Also, a good friend is an elder at the church. In my 45 minute discussion after the second service I was asked if I was trying to hurt the church. Unfortunately the problem of sexual abuse is not limited to evangelical churches.
Wherever an institution prioritizes its own selfish interests and its own success over the safety and wellbeing of tis members, that creates an environment where evil thrives.
The Roman Catholic Church has been exposed over the past 25 years or so as having a huge problem with sexual abuse of children.
And as I mentioned in my post above, the Church of England has recently been experiencing this sort of exposure as well. For decades, the Church of England swept the abuse of children under the carpet, and now the truth is finally coming out. In 2015, Bishop Peter Ball, a friend of Prince Charles, was convicted of pedophilia. The prominent Anglican Bishop George Bell was also exposed as a pedophile. In some cases these offenders had previously been questioned by the police, but they were never arrested due to their status. For example, Anglican Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, upon being interviewed by police, downplayed his abuse of little boys as “just pinching their bottoms.” Of course, it’s very common for pedophiles to narcissistically try to gaslight the victims into believing that they (the victims) are wrong for “making a big deal” out of being abused. Huddleston was unfortunately never prosecuted, after the Director of Public Prosecutions declined to press charges.
The evangelical Protestant churches liked to claim that they were more transparent and thus free from the plague of sexual abuse. However, as the cases of people such as Robert Morris, Mike Bickle, and many others have revealed, the opposite is true. Instead of being immune from sexual abuse, evangelical churches are often plagued by it, in large part because these churches tend to be independent standalone institutions where the Big Boss pastor rules the roost, with no accountability or oversight. Combine that with the obsession that many evangelical churches have for controlling their members, along with the insatiable lust for wealth and fame and power that most megachurch pastors have, and it results in the situation that corporate evangelical Christianity Inc is in today, where sexual abuse, spiritual abuse, and other horrific behavior is rife.
It does seem like certain denominations in the USA (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc) seem to be less affected by the plague of sexual abuse that has been exposed in other denominations and in evangelical churches.
I am not sure why that is. Maybe the Lutherans, Presbyterians, etc have more transparency and better accountability mechanisms in place? Are these denominations vetting their clergy more carefully? Do these denominations tend to be humbler and more open, and less likely to cover things up? Or are these denominations less enticing to pedophiles and other predators for some reason? Or maybe some combination of these factors? I don’t know.
It’s also possible that those denominations have sexual abuse problems just like other denominations, but the scandal has not yet been exposed.
Prior to around 2000 or 2005, the widespread abuse of children within the Catholic Church was not widely known among the public, because the Catholic leaders had been able to cover it up.
It’s possible that the denominations which have so far not been revealed to have a big sexual abuse problem, simply have been able to cover it up, and the truth has not yet come to light.
It’s also possible that these denominations are doing something different, which has made it more difficult for pedophiles to infiltrate their churches.
It’s a very interesting question, and one that merits investigation.
IF certain denominations such as the Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, etc are doing something different that has prevented sexual abuse from being pervasive in their churches, then it would be useful for other denominations to learn from it.
As far as I know, the Eastern Orthodox denominations have not had many sexual abuse scandals either. Maybe they are doing something different to prevent it, that evangelical churches, the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, etc can learn from.
Or maybe the Eastern Orthodox churches have been able to cover it up so far? Or maybe there have been scandals but I am just not aware of them.

I saw these two polar opposites comments on the Fort Mill Sun article. The elders have sided with the first one, and say that those with the second opinion “need healing”:
1) Pastor Don has acknowledged his past mistakes and sins, and through turning away from them, God has healed his heart and soul. Now, he maintains a genuine relationship with God. Everyone has a history of sin or failure; not many can claim they don’t. When a pastor can relate to others’ struggles because they have faced their own deep challenges and have overcome them, they can deliver messages that truly resonate and heal hearts. I will stand by Pastor Don and his family, and reject the lack of forgiveness some people feel. It’s often rooted in ego and inexperience with their own sins and failures. Thank you, Pastor Don, for heeding God’s call and sharing His word so effectively.
2) I’m shocked by this whole situation. We have been attending and were considering joining. This is not a person who was unaware of God, went to jail and then became a Christian. He used his position to take sexual advantage of a minor. This should permanently disqualify him from having access to children or anyone vulnerable. Yes the Bible and God calls us to forgive and not judge. So let him attend church and find a career where he can’t use his position to take advantage of someone again. They hid this from the voting members when he was hired, they minimized it today in the message to the church and they are not even considering the victim in all of this. His crime is not victimless, the same as if a teacher did this they would no longer be teaching. This type of abuse is done in the dark so the church elders cannot be certain of anything regarding his ongoing actions. Thank God there are brave people coming forward sharing this information.

I have seen this in the comments on other Christian websites too.
Whenever a famous pastor is exposed as a predator, a bunch of creeps emerge from the woodwork to defend him.
These creepy commenters have been attacking Cindy (the victim of Robert Morris), claiming that “it’s been 30 years, she needs to get over it” and “she’s making the church look bad” and “Morris is just human, he’s not perfect, he made a mistake” and similar repulsive pedophile apologist arguments.
I don’t know whether these commenters are the offending pastors themselves, or other pedophiles who feel the need to defend their fellow pedophiles, or people who sympathize with pedophiles.
But it’s truly disgusting and repulsive.
And it’s horrifying that there are people who think that pedophilia and rape are not a big deal.
There are some sick people out there.

It continues to amaze me how many churchgoers don’t realize that there is only one Church … it’s called the Body of Christ. Not every church is ‘the’ Church, not every christian is Christian … but embedded in every church are genuine Christians who grieve when these things happen. And when these things happen in the extended church family, those “willing to stand for truth” throughout the Body of Christ should speak into the error in an attempt to protect God’s design for His Church to be pure and holy. The arrogance and lack of repentance is breath-taking.
These elders reveal their dishonest and lack of integrity by saying that they wish they had prepared for the day that Logan’s conviction would be revealed.
So they don’t regret hiring the pedophile to lead the church, and they don’t regret concealing it from the congregation. They only regret not preparing to manage the fallout after the truth was revealed to everyone by outsiders.
The elders obviously made an intentional decision to conceal from their congregants that the pastor, the leader of the church, is a convicted pedophile.
It took outsiders to reveal this fact to the church members, who still wouldn’t know that their pastor is a sex offender if they elders had their way.
I wonder how the church members feel about this. How do the fathers and mothers feel, knowing that their elders have been concealing the pastor’s pedophilia conviction the whole time he has been leading their church?
Personally I would be livid at the elders.
The elders had better hope that Logan hasn’t abused anyone at the church after they hired him and concealed his conviction from the congregation. Because if he has, they will probably be civilly (if not criminally) liable.
I would also like to point out that the name “Eternal Church” seems pompous, pretentious, and blasphemous.

On another forum, one guy even told me that God gave him the power to strike people down, and that God will kill me (!) because I disagreed with him on a theological issue.

That’s an actual quote from one of the elders, named Lorne James. It “breaks his heart” that South Carolina has a sex offender registry. He “hates it” that there is a sex offender registry in South Carolina, and he clearly wishes it didn’t exist. Lorne is angry that the sex offender registration requirement has caused “hurt” to the sex offender and his family.
And notice that he says “it was Don’s story to share.”

Andrew Denney’s research is revealing the demographics of clergy sexual abuse. Most abusers are adult men, in a broad age range. Victims are by and large women and girls, with some minor boys.
The more we have women’s voices at the Communion table, the more exposure and prevention, obviously. That table, as instituted by Jesus, is round with level chairs. There’s neither a podium, nor a throne, nor an altar. The floor is level, and the chairs are nondescript, identical.
The watchbloggers are predominantly women, hence, “Daughters of Stan.” (Stan must be a great guy to have such noble daughters.)

The first speaker said that some of the sheep have asked the elders four questions:
1) Was trust broken?
2) Can trust be restored?
3) Is Pastor Don qualified to continue preaching?
4) Are the elders qualified to continue to lead?
He said that there was not enough time to answer these questions. But then they proceeded to answer each one.
Yes, trust was broken. They apologized to the church for not being “proactive” in convincing the church and the world that hiring a convicted child sex offender is not bad but rather a testimony of God’s grace.
Yes, trust can be restored by “leaning in to Jesus and the gospel” (the congregation responded wit hearty amens)
Yes, Pastor Don is qualified to continue preaching: “First, in multiple occasions we have affirmed the Lord’s call ten years ago to be the teaching pastor of Eternal and have affirmed that continued call on his life.” And they gave him PTO into at least September.
Yes, the elders are qualified to lead. All the wicked naysayers are wrong; they don’t understand grace. Those who disagree need spiritual healing. We will not continue to respond to queries like “an endless game of whack-a-mole.”
Not to be outdone, the second speaker confirmed that the hiring of the sex offender and his continued ministry was done without voting or input from the members. But this was okay because it is the elders job to lead. Then he does exquisite sin leveling (looking back 25 years who wouldn’t have dirty laundry). He uses church growth as confirmation of their decision to hire. He then blame shifts by attacking social media and Satan. In an excited voice he decides to bind Satan from hurting the congregation in the future. And then, incredibly, he says to those members who question them, “I can’t drag people along where they don’t want to go.”
Re-listening to the unbridled hubris of today’s performance is heart wrenching.

Is a church in the USA a private enterprise with a public community presence?
Does the pastor ask everyone, the public, for money, for his personal paycheck?
Is this same pastor transparent about his use of his collections of money? Do donors have a right to know?
Are the attendees dealing with felons in leadership? Do attendees even know who they are dealing with? Do they have a right to know?
Public figures (such as pastors), and the people who put them in place (elders), at least in theory, have a responsibility to the public.
There are specific laws directed to situations of being a public figure.
“In the United States, public figures must prove ‘actual malice’ to win a defamation lawsuit based on slander or libel (spoken or written defamation). This means that the person who made the statement either knew it was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth. Public figures must also show that they suffered a direct monetary loss as a result of the [false] statement.

I listened to the 11AM service and I took a lot of notes. So many, I realized I need to respond to the sermon. My guess is that some folks from the church are now aware of TWW and my response may get back to the elders.
The elders tried but still failed to addresss the underlying problems.I appreciate their apology but I heard nothing about anyone stepping down due to this egregious omission of Logan’s felony. However, they are worried enough that they told him to take a break with pay until 9/1. They are sufficiently worried that they told him to hide out and let the dust settle. Their train took a little detour and it look like the Book of Samuels will not suffic.e

Mrs. Harrington speaks exactly to the concern of those who comment regularly on TWW. We’ve seen this situation many times before. Church leaders run to the side of the abuser, with little to no mention of the victim, and only a “trust us” defense as to why the congregation was not adequately informed. Forgive Mr. Logan if he has genuinely repented? Certainly. Restore him to ministry? Absolutely not. Child sex abuse should permanently disqualify a man from Christian ministry. There are other places to serve in the Body of Christ.

That is a very good point. Women are also much more likely to have been victims of sexual assault themselves, so as you point out women are more likely to take a hard line on sexual abuse, rather than sweeping it under the carpet because the offender is “one of the good old boys.”
As a man (and also a survivor of sexual abuse), I think a lot of men have a hard time relating to sexual abuse victims and often tend to be more likely to trivialize sexual assault, since they have never been victimized themselves.
I think men in general need to be more compassionate, sympathetic, and caring towards victims of sexual abuse.

My conclusion after sitting through two services and re-listening to the first service: The unqualified elders and much of the congregation have been taken in by an accomplished actor who is gifted at holding his breath underwater.
Don Logan was on staff with Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church as “Coordinator of Worship Media and Website” before moving to the mission field in 2008. I tuned in on YouTube – The 9 am service was the most egregious example of emotional manipulation I’ve ever witnessed. I was sick to my stomach with each new sentence coming out of Lorne’s mouth. These elders are out of control and have NO humility. From his outright admission that he resents (he actually used the word “hate”) the laws in place for sex offenders, “societal scarlet letter”, to using the church’s growth during Covid as a reason why Don shouldn’t be questioned, to belittling anyone who might disagree by condescendingly saying that people shouldn’t be looking into Don’s past, “it was supposed to be a beautiful story of redemption.” He went so far as to blame the congregation/community interested in this matter and vocalizing concern for being a stumbling block to furthering the gospel at Eternal – his quote was “I hate the cruelty of this world.” I just about puked! (As if it’s the congregants fault there’s stress at the church right now- Not Don’s crime that he hid… /smh)
I witnessed institutional spiritual and psychological abuse & manipulation straight from the pulpit yesterday. . Gaslighting, Reversing Victim and Offender, Infantalizing and talking down to the congregants, minimizing Don’s crime and painting it as a “beautiful story of redemption” — ummmm what?? – He wasn’t “lost” when he committed this abuse – he was already in ministry, a 30 year old ADULT, who used his position in ministry to abuse and hurt a 14 year old – a CHILD.
The service was just abhorrent. My heart grieves that this church just doesn’t get it, and people are essentially being told they are of the devil just for questioning a Pedo.
My speculation, and it’s only a speculation, I have zero evidence to back this up – but my haunch is that there’s probably a spirit of blame (in the Elders’ hearts) toward the young female victim in this crime. I could imagine “jezebel spirit” or “temptress” type comments leading them to minimize Don’s crime in their own minds, thinking of her as a woman and not a child. Many of these church leaders have blamed women for men’s sexual sins for decades.
A 2 month paid vacation is just a slap in the congregation/community’s face. The rest of us non-rapists are working our butts off to put food on the table, and Don gets two months PTO to “rest” because he’s had a week of negative press, resulting from HIS ACTION of hiding the extent of his criminal past from his congregants and his state.

This session has been a disaster since they particularlized in the PCA, then left, then let the pastor at the time carry the burden all by himself until he burnt out and left, then were so desperate to get a new leader that they hid this from the congregation. Always wishy washy, no conviction. Their knee jerk response is too blame the victim , blame the reporters, and apologize only for not getting ahead of it. They should all resign.

Ed. Note: Don Logan is a man with most likely a paraphilia. It is not normal for a grown man to seek a 14 y.o. to fulfill his sexual perversions. If he has a paraphilia, he is still possibly afflicted by the related problems, one of which is likely reoffend. But maybe you do not know about things like this? Most people on this blog are far more versed in the Scripture than many. The people who are concerned are well versed in both Scripture and in the understanding of sex abuse. I don’t know you, but serious misconduct with a teen is not a mistake. A mistake is wearing one blue sock and one black sock. Please learn your categories. It is a choice that is clearly spelled out by Scripture. It is a sin and a crime and may even be a paraphilia with the possibility of reoffense, which means that kids are at risk. Finally, if you think that you are at risk of making the “mistake” of sexually harming a child, you need help.

First of all referring to Don as a Perv is so very wrong! Did he do wrong, absolutely. That was almost 30 yrs ago and he did his time for his wrongdoing. Don is a good man with compassion in his heart and yes he did a horrific crime, but, again , he did his time. I would much rather sit and listen to him preach than some others in the church. He speaks from the depths of his heart. Those of you that are casting stones are obviously not well versed in the Bible yourselves. You need to stop throwing stones within your own glass houses! Right now Don and his family need prayers, not to be judged as so many of you are doing. Guess you people have never made mistakes in your life huh?

Besides various Christian denominations that others mentioned (and BTW I would add the Roman Catholics to that group), there were also the Native American religions. Jews and Muslims have also suffered though not quite to the extent of the Mormons (see for instance Grant’s General Order No. 11, issued in late 1862 and overturned by Lincoln, expelling all Jews from areas under Grant’s control).

I will add this. Your comment is an example of the teaching you have received from Don Logan. I feel bad for you and many others. It is possible that you were taught in this manner so that you would ignore the broader Scriptural implications of Logan’s history. “Mistake” is downgrading egregious sin, crime, and possible paraphilia. You are not the first to express your understanding of such weighty matters as a “mere mistake.” I plan to look into the teaching that leads to a comment like this. ‘sin’: an offense against religious or moral law

Kay, I’m a long-time participant on The Wartburg Watch. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard “I know he’s done some bad things, but he sure can preach!” The focus needs to be on “he’s done some bad things” (bad things to a child) rather than an ability to preach. With a touch of charisma, a gift of gab, and working knowledge of the Bible, anyone (anyone!) can preach. We deal often on TWW with the anyones who could preach who were also abusers of one sort or another.
I’m sorry that you are walking through this awful mess at your church. It could have all been avoided if the elders had done the right thing years ago.
