Part One: Phillip Bethancourt’s Whistleblower Document Which Deserves Its Own Page — 22 Comments

  1. “preserve the base” (Ronnie Floyd)

Translates to “do whatever is necessary to protect the Cooperative Program.” CP offerings ($500 million per year) are sent by thousands of cooperating SBC churches to fund various SBC entities and top-dog salaries. The “base” ain’t got a clue what goes on in SBC ivory towers; they still innocently give to SBC work thinking they can trust national leaders to do the right thing (they need to get over that!).

  2. Max: “preserve the base” (Ronnie Floyd)

I think I can read Ronnie Floyd’s mind: “preserve the base” = I am the base”

  3. Personal prediction: There will be an explosion next week at the convention, or a mass exodus. To be continued…

  4. dee:
    Judas Maccabeus,
There’s more but since it names abuse victims. He will not post it but give it to an independent review group..

I suspect there will be a long overdue blowup at the convention. The rules committee will likely try to suppress it but sooner or later a reckoning will arrive. They cannot run and hide from the things that they have done anymore.

  5. Judas Maccabeus,

I was just proofing Part 2 and an announcement came out that there will be an *investigation.* I can barely keep up with the news. I’ll link it in my post which I shall now try to proof and post

  6. Linn: Personal prediction: There will be an explosion next week at the convention, or a mass exodus. To be continued…

Oh, there may be some weeping and gnashing of teeth perhaps … but I figure the annual meeting will end as usual. SBC messengers will agree to disagree, join hands, hug each other, sing Kumbaya, and climb back on the bus return to their home churches with nothing changing much. Oh they will pass a few resolutions they won’t keep and Mohler will be crowned King of the Mountain. All the time thinking they had done God’s will, without God having been involved at all.

(if God by chance does get involved, there will be that mass exodus and/or eruption you predict … with a touch of His wrath, they will be scurrying out of the conference center like Baptists running to a chicken dinner)

  7. Nancy2(aka Kevlar): I think I can read Ronnie Floyd’s mind: “preserve the base” = I am the base”

Or perhaps a description of Ronnie Floyd: “I am base.” (“Base” in the sense of morally low; without estimable personal qualities; dishonorable; meanspirited; selfish; cowardly. From DICTIONARY.COM.)

  8. Max: Floyd’s salary/benefits/perks is an SBC top secret, but there has been speculation that he draws a $500,000 salary:

    That would be absurd true.

  9. Max,

I absolutely agree with you Max that the messengers will end things status quo. Just another reason that, like you, I am DONE. It’s heartbreaking, sickening, and enraging.

  10. Leah Jacobs: like you, I am DONE. It’s heartbreaking, sickening, and enraging

After giving 70 years of my life to the SBC, I’ve experienced all those emotions. For the last 20 of those years, I felt like a voice crying in the wilderness. I now lament after seeing a once-great denomination forfeit its gifting of evangelism, something I “prophesied” when the New Calvinists showed up. Mainline Southern Baptists should have stopped Mohler in the 1990s.

Personal prediction: There will be an explosion next week at the convention, or a mass exodus. To be continued…

As the little girl in the commercial says, why not both?

Much as I disagree with the doctrines (and many of the practices) of both the IFB’s and the Churches of Christ, their eschewing formal denominational structures (both hierarchal and congregational) is a plus. They don’t have to spend $$$ on keeping a power base active.

  12. Mark R: They don’t have to spend $$$ on keeping a power base active.

All that does is drop the Game of Thrones to a local level.
(Not so local if they become a Mega with “Franchise Campuses” all over the place.)
