PRAYER OF ST FRANCIS  link

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand; To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

Martin Luther’s Prayer

Behold, Lord,
An empty vessel that needs to be filled.
My Lord, fill it.

I am weak in faith;
Strengthen thou me.

I am cold in love;
Warm me and make me fervent
That my love may go out to my neighbour.

I do not have a strong and firm faith;
At times I doubt and am unable to trust thee altogether.

O Lord, help me.
Strengthen my faith and trust in thee.

In thee I have sealed the treasures of all I have.

I am poor;
Thou art rich and didst come to be merciful to the poor.

I am a sinner;
Thou art upright.

With me there is an abundance of sin;
In thee is the fullness of righteousness.

Therefore, I will remain with thee of who I can receive
But to whom I may not give.
Amen.

A Prayer for Forgiveness: Psalm 51:1-3, 10-12

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness;
according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me.
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
“Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free Spirit.”
Amen

Benediction: Prayer of St. Theresa of Avila (1515-1582) link

Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away:
God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.
Amen

  1. What Jesus did wasn’t about something specialised, like your standing with “God”. He was opposing – in a non ad hominem way – the unrighteous enforcement of political power. By advertising the proper substitute. And some like Nicodemus did follow him.

  2. Jesus is no provocateur. And Nicodemus’ prudence foresaw that they would both be there to walk another day. Paul began to wobble when he didn’t heed the prophecy to stay put.

  3. (continued) “Political” in the general sense of relating impacted by power. So, there were many in authority who favoured justice, even if they lacked urgency or weren’t sufficiently detached from an attitude of importance. Thus, what was the “secret” of Jesus and His followers? It was prayer, prayers of all sorts and all the time. When we are the other side, we will be thanked that we did: by the frail and by busy authorities alike.
