Liberty University: Praise the Lord and Shut Up!

Jeffrey Chalmers sent the following article about Liberty University. A ‘Culture of Silence’ Persisted for Decades at Liberty U., Education Dept. Says. Although one must subscribe to read the entire article, its presence in the secular Chronicle of Higher Education is concerning. The report was purportedly given to Liberty.

From the report
“It is abundantly clear that it caused Liberty’s crime statistics to be substantially and systematically underreported. This condition has persisted for many ears, and may in fact track back to 1992.!”

Liberty reportedly responded:

“The university has been engaged in dialogue with the department about reaching a timely, efficient, and fair resolution.”

In other words, the problems at Liberty University are becoming widely known. So what was the problem?

USA Today published Feds say Liberty University created ‘fear of reprisal’ for sexual violence survivors.

“Victims of sexual assault felt dissuaded by Liberty administration’s reputation for punishing sexual assault survivors rather than helping them,” federal investigators wrote in the May report

Liberty has faced increasing public pressure in recent years over policies that survivors say allow sexual violence to run unchecked. The preliminary report says overlooked allegations of violence reached all the way to the top, including accusations involving a former university president and a senior administrator.

…Survivors filed a lawsuit in 2021 against Liberty, saying it had ignored their reports while enforcing a code of conduct known as the Liberty Way. A dozen women settled with the the Lynchburg, Virginia, university the following year in an agreement that remains private.

A settlement usually means the victims were given a cash settlement. Since no one is talking, it usually means an NDA was part of the deal. Liberty University’s Handling of Sexual Assaults Under Investigation by Department of Education. This was written in 2022.

ProPublica previously detailed how the evangelical school had dismissed reports of rape and threatened to punish accusers for running afoul of its moral code. Investigators are now looking into whether Liberty violated federal law.

PTL for Bleach Bit and other programs like it!

And how does a quasi-Christian enterprise handle this? Did they turn over everything they knew? Uh no. Praise the Lord and pass around bleach bit. According to USA Today:

Education Department investigators, for example, discovered that “senior officials in HR sought the assistance of IT staff to wipe certain computer hard drives on April 26, 2022, the very week that the review team first visited the campus.”

PTL for shredders!

In 2016, a police officer saw many incident reports and reported it like a good officer. Umm, the reports were waiting to be shredded. Praise the Lord and pass the shredder.

Investigators also referenced a 2016 incident in which a Liberty Police officer noted “stacks of incident reports laying on tables in an unsecured room.” That person later learned the records were to be “shredded.”

PTL and underreport so your university will seem safe!

The Royse Report was all over this in Liberty University Broke Safety Laws for Years, Leaked Government Investigation Finds: Report.

The report centers on a program review of the school’s Clery Act compliance, according to the Post. It reportedly shows the university underreported campus crime and deterred people from reporting crimes in the first place. That’s even as Liberty claims to be “one of the safest campuses in the state — and in the nation.”

PTL and …whadda you mean fines?!

Under the Clery Act, colleges that participate in federal student aid programs must disclose certain information about crime and campus safety. A program review like this can result in fines or even compromise a school’s eligibility for financial aid.

It’s unclear how much Liberty could be fined as a result of the program review. But hundreds of millions of dollars in student aid may be at stake: Liberty received $874 million in 2020-2021, the Post reported today.

PTL and keep that tuition money rolling in!

It reports more than 15,000 students on its Lynchburg, Va., campus — among more than 130,000 enrolled worldwide. But it has also faced multiple lawsuits over its handling of sexual assaults, and was previously fined $120,000 for violating the Clery Act.

PTL, and whadda you mean a Liberty President was accused of a sexual incident?

The school did not include a Liberty University Police Department report regarding “an alleged rape that was committed by a former Liberty President” in its daily crime log, the Post reported.

Was it Falwell? Well, maybe not, but…

Only two former Liberty presidents were alive when the police report was made. One of them, Jerry Falwell Jr., told the Post it was “absolutely” not about him. The other former president, John Borek, reportedly did not respond when the Post tried to ask him about it. Borek is on Liberty’s board of trustees.

PTL and the senior administrator got into the act!

The report also lists a timeline of alleged sexual misconduct by a senior administrator at Liberty, the Post reported. Those allegations closely resemble accusations against the school’s current executive director of student health and wellness that were included in a class-action lawsuit blaming Liberty for “enabling on-campus rapes.” Liberty settled that lawsuit last year.

PTL, and let’s fire the ones who air our dirty laundry before the world.

TRR has obtained a three-page excerpt of the DOE report from an anonymous source whose identity TRRhas verified.

According to the excerpt, the DOE found that Liberty retaliated against a former senior vice president after he tried to address Clery Act violations. The executive’s efforts to make Liberty abide by the law “coincided closely” with his firing, the document said.

The document found that from at least April through October 2021, the employee took issue with “the university’s possible coverup of sex crimes and other violations.” The employee shared his concerns with the interim president and other senior executives several times, including at an executive leadership meeting on October 2, 2021.

Liberty fired the employee just two days after that meeting,

PTL and…ABC News? Demonic, for sure.

ABC News reported Liberty University failed to disclose crime data, warn of threats for years: Report

New reporting says preliminary findings from a federal investigation found that Liberty University failed to warn its Virginia campus community about safety threats

LU. reports that it was all lies. Lies, I tell you!

In a statement released Tuesday, Liberty confirmed it received the government’s report in May but said it has been corresponding with officials since then about “significant errors, misstatements, and unsupported conclusions in the Department’s preliminary findings.”

…Lawsuits by former students and employees have accused the school of botching sexual assault reports or failing to investigate allegations of rape. The litigation was filed under under Title IX, the federal law that protects against sex discrimination in education and often overlaps with Clery.

PTL, and we’ll protect you, kind of.

The school said it had spent over $8.5 million on campus security upgrades, while ensuring that more licensed mental health providers are available to provide counseling.

The university said last year that it was also revising its amnesty policy to “better communicate” that it will not discipline parties who engage in behaviors, in connection with a case of sexual harassment or assault, “that would have otherwise violated its student honor code.”

Finally

It appears to this outsider that it is time to follow the Way of the Truth and come clean.

  1. “When it is time to say these hard things, I ask myself three things:

    1) Did you mean it?
    2) Can you defend it?
    3) Did you say it with love?

If the answer is yes to all three, I say it and let the chips fall.”

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

  6. Jeffrey Chalmers: “Do all you can to protect our Brand”

It’s common knowledge that many trustees are appointed to university boards because they have been large donors to the institution. When they “Do all you can to protect our Brand”, they are protecting their own contributions. Very few think about protecting the precious name of Jesus. A place like LU may have Christian leaders sprinkled in the board mix, but the movers and shakers among the trustees are no doubt the big money folks.

    Headless Unicorn Guy,

And, the Liberty U brand is:“The Liberty Way”!!!

I remember Harry Turtledove’s alternate-history series that started with the Confederacy winning the Civil War in How Few Remain. It continues with a balkanized USA/CSA constantly going back-and-forth for revenge against the other for winning the previous war — just like two European countries. Both get dragged into WW1 on opposite sides and the Confederacy’s alliance ends up losing and gets a Versailles Treaty in reverse.

At which point, Turtledove writes the Confederacy as going really DARK, retelling the rise of Nazism in in Germany and the runup to WW2 on an American front. The name of this para-Nazi party?
    The FREEDOM Party.
And the mandatory new Southern Greeting decreed by the Leader and the Party?

  13. The sad thing is – I am not surprised by this crap anymore. The shock factor is gone. But praise God these deeds are being exposed in the bright light of truth.

  14. elastigirl: i’m having a sasquatch party tonight!

I’m gonna’ be up at Lake Matthews on a back road known for UFO sightings.
I wanna’ see that one that looks like an ice cream cone, like the one in Close Encounters.

  15. Muff Potter,

I saw a UFO, or maybe a UAP around 60 years ago. The whole neighborhood watched it for about 1/2 an hour. Not very impressive— just an orange light which did seemingly impossible things, like slowly moving one way then taking off at incredible speed In another. I don’t think an any object could have done this— perhaps something purely optical? No evidence of any intelligent control, whether human, alien, or demonic…. My wife, OTOH, wants to see Squatch. I explain he couldn’t live here in Idaho, or someone would surely shoot him. Oh look! An elk! And poor Squatch would be extinct…

  16. Dave A A: Oh look! An elk! And poor Squatch would be extinct…

Believe it, there is more than one idiot moron out there who would shoot Sasquatch.

  18. Max: Speaking of …

“Josh Duggar Will Remain in Prison Until 2032 After Appeal in Child Pornography Case Is Rejected”

Good. He had all those little kids in his house and his wife would not allow them to be questioned. I have a bad feeling about this. By the time he gets out, the youngest child will be nearly a teenager. Oh, and he’s already been in trouble for getting a secret phone, so there went his accumulated “good time” (not that the feds give much good time).

  19. Muslin, fka Dee Holmes: Good. He had all those little kids in his house and his wife would not allow them to be questioned.

    Like a Good Christian Wife.

“Because a Good Wife learns to cower
    Beneath the Umbrella of Power;
From the cover of Heaven’s gate

    — Stave Taylor, “I Manppulate”

I have a bad feeling about this.

As in Good Christian Wifey let Biblical Hubby use the kids to slake his Appetites?
(And according to what’s been leaked, Josh’s Appetites were dark and sick even for pedos. Enough to shock investigators and prosecutors who had experience.)
As News of the Weird would put it, “More Christian Family Values”.

  20. Ava Aaronson: “Power is at the top. Knowledge is at the bottom. When they don’t communicate, the ship sinks.” – David Marquet, US Navy Commander

Ava, thanks for fab Marquet quote for when I am suspect (all the time) for my originality.

I don’t want the hard work of being boss but “presbyterian” performance-oriented “human doings” can’t grasp that.
