An Ancient Collect AD 440 link

‘O Lord,
direct our steps this day
into the way of peace,
and strengthen our hearts
to obey your commandments.
May the Dayspring visit us from on high,
and give light
to those who sit in darkness
and the shadow of death,
that they may adore you for your mercy,
follow you for your truth,
desire you for your sweetness,
for you are the blessed Lord God of Israel,
now and forever.
Amen

Kyrie link

Let us all cry with one voice,
Lord, have mercy.

You were led like a sheep to be crucified,
Lord, have mercy.

From the cross you looked on your mother and your disciple. Look on us from heaven with pity,
Lord, have mercy.

By the shedding of your blood you redeemed the world.
Lord, have mercy.

You commended your spirit to your Father,
Lord, have mercy.

By your cross grant us forgiveness,
Lord, have mercy.

Deliver Us From Death Veit Dietrich, d. 1549

Lord God, heavenly Father,
you sent your Son to be made flesh,
that by his death he might atone for our sins
and deliver us from eternal death.
Confirm in our hearts
the hope that our dear Lord Christ, who
raised the widow’s son with a word,
will raise us on the last day
and give us eternal life;
through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one true God, now and forever.
Amen

Benediction link

May the love of the Father,
the tenderness of the Son,
and the presence of the Spirit,
gladden your heart
and bring peace to your soul,
this day and all days,
Amen.

  1. As We Saw Him Go. The 120 founded the church at that instant. Jesus was going to send Holy Spirit in groups and alone for living works at many times thenceforth. Because the 120 were church then and there, their fulfilment of being church was to pray in Jerusalem.

Defectors are those who claim that church only started when their kind turned up in the public eye at pentecost (functional cessationists).

Bearing continual fruits of our gifts unvetoed is a fact, and not a style or manner of occurrence. The one thing to be copied is to pray without ceasing, each in our way.

When Peter said “this day” he was referring to timing in the personal experience of some hearers.

Defectors are those who pretended to do the opposite of defect. “Back to” (the Bible as if they knew the Bible). Defectors are those who in a cynical reversal of I Jn didn’t “go out from” them “not being of” them.

They stayed, they (probably) didn’t rebadge, they just distorted, to ensure the general members would get cut off from the practice of praying, from their soul competency, from their priesthood of each, from any belief, from bearing any fruit from their gifts unvetoed, consecrated casualness.

That’s when we’ll have, and need, providential discernment gifts. Coming through the inconsiderable ones: children, invalids.

  2. 1 – Corrigendum:

Michael in UK: from any belief

Read: from any belief in meaning

2 – I pondered “go out from”. As churches were in great households, perhaps this entailed the remnant relocating. “From” has the sense of joined hearts not of street address.
