Post Postponed Tonight.

“They [dogs] never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation. ”― Jerome K. Jerome

I had to rush my elderly pug, Buttercup, to the vet in respiratory distress due to a collapsed trachea. She deteriorated during the day and crossed the rainbow bridge a little while ago. Needless to say, the death of two pugs (both 13) in a few weeks has left me a bit depressed. Thankfully,  I still have a young one, Poppy.

I will try to write tomorrow or, at the latest, Wednesday.

Most importantly, He is risen. Alleluia!

  1. Dee,
I know it’s rough to lose a little buddy…. and two in such a short time span. Ouch!

As a farm girl and a dog/horse lover, I just want to thank you for what you do for dogs ….. giving a home, love, attention, and care to dogs that have been rejected and/or abused by others. Has it not been for you, Buttercup and Tulip might have very well have missed out on a lot of living, and a lot of love and patience, and a wonderful home.

For as long as I can remember from childhood, we always had one or two dogs—as one gets old, we find a young one to ‘prepare’ to take over. The last one (Beagle– Candy) passed away 2004—8 years after my mom (age 87) went to heaven 1998– one day after Red Sox reversed the Curse. Since then we did not get another dog, because we miss Candy too much. I kept searching the scriptures whether dogs may go to heaven. C S Lewis hinted at this in Chronicles of Narnia. But George Macdonald actually wrote about this in his book: “The Hope of the Gospel”— Last Chapter: “The hope of the Universe”– available at Amazon. But our pastor (seminary professor) said me this promise is not scriptural. I am still hoping he is wrong. Candy was my best friend on earth—–
Regardless— Jesus Christ was, is and will always be my best friend who knows and loves me more than I love myself. —- and yours too !

dogmatic overconfidence in the words ‘scriptural’ / ‘not scriptural’ is how I measure the salt to take it with. (all the more with arguments from silence)

    no one knows.

i’m inclined to think yes. the space of time when our dog passed, our cat (in a different location) was noticeably experiencing / observing something highly unusual. i don’t know exactly how to describe it. she was aware of something we couldn’t see.

I wish I spoke cat (she’s very talkative).

  4. not an action hero,

I have a hope for the recreation of my pets in heaven. Although they do not have a soul like ours, God created them to be who they were, and there is nothing to say that God, in His infinite power, told us that love never dies, cannot give us back our beloved pets. You’d be surprised by how many passengers I have asked who hold onto this hope.
Also, God uses the analogies of animals in heaven: “The lion will lie down with the lamb.” Is it a literary device and a term born out of something real? I prefer to think so.

That’s how I see it too. The Bible is a great and wonderful thing, but don’t make too much of it (my opinion), and keep a salt shaker (so to speak) nearby.

  6. Dee,

I’m so sorry for your loss….

There’s no rush to write the next post….please look after yourself first. 🙂 And I can picture you with Poppy near you as you write. 🙂

  7. not an action hero,

Psalm 84:11: For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
    <
1Cor 8:6: There is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

Forgive me, Not an action hero, but your pastor seems quite uneducated for a seminary professor. And/or he has not loved a pet. Candy will be with you, because God is just that good.

    D.

Eph 1:9,10: He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

Col 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Heb 1:2,3: in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

It becomes just another meaningless buzzword.
    Or “The Party Line, Comrades!”
Or a Weapon to beat others into line on pain of Eternal Hell.
Or the Incantation from a black-bound Grimoire that binds God Himself to be your personal ENFORCER.
    Just like a Conjure-man’s familiar/bound spirits.

  9. dee: Is it a literary device and a term born out of something real? I prefer to think so.

Commenting on Roman’s 8:20, Matthew Poole writes – “ Romans 8:20 (Matthew Poole’s Commentary on the Holy Bible, Volumes 1–3): If these words be understood of the world, and all the creatures therein contained, then they show the creature’s present condition; it is subject to vanity, and that, either in regard of its insufficiency, it falling short of that for which it was first created and ordained; then a thing is said to be vain, when it doth not answer or reach its proper end: or in respect of its transitoriness and uncertainty, of which see 1 Cor. 7:31; Heb. 1:11, 12; 1 John 2:17. The next verse tells us it is subject to the bondage of corruption as well as vanity. Now this must needs be an unwilling subjection, therefore it is here said it is not subject willingly, i. e. of its own accord, or of its proper instinct and inclination. What the will is in those that are rational, the inclination is in those things that are natural; how comes it then into this condition? The next clause tells us, it is by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope: i. e. God, for the sin of man, hath cursed the creature, and subjected it to vanity and corruption: see Gen. 3:17; 4:12; Lev. 26:19, 20. And though he hath done this, yet there is ground to expect and hope that the creature shall return again to its former estate wherein it was created; that it shall be delivered and restored into a better condition, as in the next verse
v21 -“ Romans 8:21 (Matthew Poole’s Commentary on the Holy Bible, Volumes 1–3): If this verse be understood of the heavens and the earth, and the things therein, the meaning is, that the creatures, in their kind, and according to their capacity, shall be partakers of that liberty and freedom, which in the children of God is accompanied with unspeakable glory; they shall not partake with the saints in glory, but of that liberty, which in the saints hath great glory attending it, and superadded to it. The creature, at the day of judgment, shall be restored (as before) to that condition of liberty which it had in its first creation; as, when it was made at first, it was free from all vanity, bondage, and corruption, so it shall be again at the time of the general resurrection: see Acts 3:19, 21; 2 Pet. 3:13.”

And as I wrote when Lily passed in 2019 – “ “The dog (is) grateful and faithful in his friendships.”
(Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers 2:8: St Basil, Letters and Select Works, Homily 9)
    Sorry for your loss Dee.

  10. So sorry for your loss, Dee! Pets are blessings from God! Much self-compassion and grace to you during this time of grief and lament. Looking forward to the day when there will be no more death or need for lament when the Kingdom of Heaven is fully established on Earth… and God’s good will is done on Earth as it is in Heaven!
