God of Hope,
we come into your presence this morning
with confidence that you will meet us here.
Where there is sadness, bring joy;
Where there is tiredness, bring refreshment;
Where there is despair, bring a renewed sense of hope.
Let this place be a sanctuary,
a safe haven for us,
a home for holy words and songs and prayers
as we devote ourselves to you.
We pray this in Jesus’ name
Amen

A Prayer of Ambrose (c 339-97) link

O Lord, who hast mercy upon all, take away from me my sins,
and mercifully kindle in me the fire of thy Holy Spirit.
Take away from me the heart of stone,
and give me a heart of flesh,
a heart to love and adore thee,
a heart to delight in thee,
to follow and to enjoy thee,
for Christ’s sake.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Nicene Creed link

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him, all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Benediction: Jude 1:24-25 (NASB Bible Gateway)

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,
to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord,
be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever.
Amen.

  1. Thank you, Dee.

    Prof. Lee is a very appealing example of believer excellence in academia.

    I especially like his point that the pursuit of happiness cannot succeed without pursuit of virtue.

    A useful concept that I encountered some years ago is “obliquity”, that the best route toward a goal may not be the route that superficially appears to be the most direct route. Sometimes, one actually hinders oneself by director pursuit — ‘he who seeks to save his life ends up losing it.’

    Jesus was enthroned as king over Israel only after an indirect path that led into deep suffering. Had he directly asserted his right to the kingship at the time of his public acclamation as king, at the triumphal entry, perhaps the war with Rome would have broken out immediately (as the Sanhedrin feared — Jn 11:48) and he would have died anyway and perhaps not have been raised afterward.

    I hope that the investments Prof Lee makes in his students bear good fruit into the long-distant future. Reproducing good character in the young is probably the most important thing that the old can do.

    Again, thank you.

  2. dee:
    Samuel Conner,

    Thank you for letting me know that you liked it.

    Same here. Excellent testimony of God’s working in the heart and life of Charles Lee. My guess is his mom was praying for her son and saw her prayers answered.

    Then, Charles Lee shares honestly and openly to the next gen. Thank you, Dee, and Charles Lee, and Charles Lee’s mom for praying for him. We love seeing prayers answered.

    Looking back, Charles Lee shares what is really important in life. We all are blessed by what he has to say.
