A RISING STAR IN THE SBC — DR. ROBERT JEFFRESS

It appears that the Southern Baptist Convention has a rising star in Texas who sits at the helm of First Baptist Church of Dallas.  Dr. Robert Jeffress became pastor of First Baptist in 2007 at the age of 51.  Here's a direct quote by Dr. Jeffress in the June 2009 Church Executive Magazine regarding his personal history at FBC Dallas:  "I grew up here, I was saved here, baptized here, ordained here, preached my first sermon here, after which I served as the youth pastor here for seven years."

Dr. Jeffress is a graduate of Baylor University (B.S.), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.), and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min.).  He is the author of seventeen books that include The Solomon Secrets (a 2002 Gold Medallion Finalist), Hell? Yes!, Grace Gone Wild!, The Divine Defense, and his latest release, Second Chance, Second Act:  Turning Your Messes into Successes.

Here is some additional information we found about Dr. Jeffress at this link:

In August 2006, Dr. Jeffress was honored as a local hero of the faith by Vision America’s distinguished "Daniel Award," for his steadfast commitment and boldness in proclaiming the uncompromising Word of God.

Dr. Jeffress hosts the television program, PATHWAY TO VICTORY, which is aired on television stations and cable & satellite systems throughout the nation and around the world. PATHWAY TO VICTORY is also aired daily on KCBI Radio, 90.9 FM in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and at KCBI.org.

Dr. Jeffress and his wife Amy have two daughters, Julia and Dorothy.

Now let's take an investigative look at Pastor Jeffress.

Do you believe that there's a place for sensationalism when talking about the Christian faith?  Apparently, Dr. Jeffress does.  Why else would he title one of his books Hell? Yes

Check out the title of this book published in 2005 and authored by Dr. Jeffress — Grace Gone Wild.

Here's the post in its entirety:

It’s amazing to see how much of the sex industry impacts and shapes the rest of the world, including the church. For example, the idea of the camcorder was thought up by pornographers back in the 60s and 70s. Today, every cell phone has a camcorder feature built-in.

The fashion fad among adolescent boys and young men to wear jeans halfway down the buttocks originated in the prison, where male prisoners who were aggressive and physically stronger would sexually abuse other male prisoners who were more docile and physically weaker. And for some of those more docile, physically weaker male prisoners, they signaled their sexual status by lowering their pants half-way down the buttocks.

Now, pornography slogan, “Girls Gone Wild,” known to exploit college women during Spring Break, is the new marketing slogan that both the world and the church have embraced. Consider a recent job fair in Baltimore using the slogan, "Jobs Gone Wild".  And consider a Christian book authored by Robert Jeffress, selling itself under the title, "Grace Gone Wild".

There’s something seriously wrong when a Christian author finds that a pornographer’s marketing slogan is a great concept to try to sell his book and make it seem appealing to other Christians.

According to his biography on the church web site

Dr. Jeffress is achieving widespread visibility.  Check out this statement at the church link:

"In addition, Dr. Jeffress regularly appears on major mainstream media outlets, including CNN's "Money," Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends," "The O'Reilly Factor," "Cavuto on Business," and "The Early Show."

Here's a recent appearance on MSNBC in which Dr. Jeffress describes how FBC Dallas is helping those who have lost their jobs:

Helping church members find employment is an admirable goal to be sure.  Interestingly, in this clip Dr. Jeffress explains, "the borrower is servant of the lender".  Shouldn't that same principle apply to a $130 million church expansion?

Tomorrow we will take a closer look at how Dr. Jeffress made quite a name for himself when he verbally denounced presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a public forum.  Stay tuned…
