On October 28, 2024, I wrote Did David Platt Highjack McLean Bible Church? The McLean Bible Church Dissenters Make Their Claim and Convinced TWW?
As Lon began to look toward retirement, the SBC powers that be salivated over this “sitting duck” treasure. Platt moved in and lied to the congregation that they were not members of the SBC except that they were, and Platt and his wife were the called messengers and happily flew off to the SBC convention, probably at the church’s expense. A melee ensued. With what appeared to be shenanigans, Platt ensured that Solomon would never be invited to preach (he was promised he could), and Platt maneuvered to win the vote to let him do as he pleased, as he always did.
Here is where I made my mistake. I didn’t understand how committed the opposition to Platt’s ascendency was. That is why these two videos, newly released, are here. By the end of Part 1, I called Todd and said he had to listen to it right away. He did and agreed with me. I now believe that the opposition has proved their point. McLean Bible Church was taken over by one of the Baptist Calvinista theodudes, firmly supported by the salivating SBC dudes who couldn’t wait to move MBC into the SBC column. In some ways, this situation reminds me of the current Park Street Church occupation.
When I started writing, I thought I might admire David Platt. I quickly discovered that this would not be the case. However, thanks to that interaction, I met Todd Wilhelm.
Todd and I first communicated when Platt came to Dubai in 2013. We both thought he lied about what he was doing by implying that he was boldly going where few missionaries had before and that his life could be in danger. Codswallop! I wrote about Platt’s lies in My, My Dubai: 9 Marks Played Hardball While Lifeway/ David Platt Stretched the Truth. The only good thing about this was that Todd emailed me, and we formed an enduring friendship. (Ignore the pics that have timed out, or check out the original post saved to The Wayback Machine.)
I don’t believe Platt told the truth about his “dangerous” visit. The Dubai gendarmes were not looking to send him into a dark prison. They didn’t care or think about him in the least. The radical was merely a fuddy-duddy trying to look cool. I believe that if he lied about Dubai, he is probably lying about other things.
Is Platt a truthteller?
We already know that he is not. For example, he appears to have “fibbed” to his nondenominational church when he declared they had not joined the SBC while Platt’s wife was a messenger for the SBC. I wonder if MBC paid for her plane ticket.
It now appears that others are taking notice of Platt’s ability not to tell the whole truth. On January 10, 2024, I wrote David Platt: Did He ‘Fib’ When He Said That McLean Bible Church Wasn’t a Member of the SBC? Surprised Much? Here is the problem. I don’t think he is inclined to tell the truth when it doesn’t benefit him.
I was pleased that another person was not impressed with Platt’s transparency. On October 28, 2024, Maina Mwara at Baptist News Global wrote Understanding the David Platt Story. Mwaura was initially pleased to speak with Platt because he rarely gives interviews. Given what transpired, the Calvinista set of the SBC would be advised to keep that boy away from anyone concerned about the truth. It seems that Platt did not mention that a negative documentary was about to be released by some rather savvy, longtime MBC members who were decidedly unhappy with Platt.
What neither the PR representative nor Platt disclosed was the impending release of a documentary about Platt — information that would have significantly influenced my approach to the interview.
The truth only emerged when I contacted the PR firm seeking clarity on what I initially dismissed as more allegations from disgruntled members. The firm’s admission that they knew about the documentary’s planned release revealed a calculated strategy to paint Platt in a positive light before its release. When I subsequently requested a follow-up interview with Platt to address these revelations, he was suddenly unavailable — a stark contrast to his earlier accessibility.

Like me, Mwaura first thought these were just some disgruntled members of MBC. He quickly changed his mind.
That two-part film, produced by Church Reform Initiative, is one of the most astounding things I’ve ever seen resulting from a church schism. A dissident group from McLean Bible Church has been after Platt for seven years now, and this is the latest salvo in their battle.
Platt played word games with unsuspecting church members. According to its bylaws, the church was supposed to remain unaffiliated with other denominations. Platt’s words are often associated with church takeovers when unsuspecting church members become covert members of the SBC.
Platt consistently characterized the relationship as a “partnership” rather than addressing direct questions about Southern Baptist affiliation — a position later echoed by Ashley Clayton of the SBC Executive Committee and NAMB, who subsequently admitted his word choice was poor.
Astute members of the church began to realize that they had been had.
Five church members filed a lawsuit against Platt, alleging financial mismanagement and other improprieties. The two-part documentary presents extensive testimony about these concerns, including:
- Controversial handling of race and Critical Race Theory issues
- Undisclosed SBC connections despite constitutional prohibitions
- Financial transfers, including a $650,000 payment to Platt’s Radical organization
- Systematic removal of members who questioned leadership decisions
- Lack of transparency in denominational relationships
Mwaura also realized that Platt might not have been honest with him. Platt’s character is now in question.
Until recently, I maintained a cordial relationship with Platt, even praising his leadership abilities in navigating the complex landscape of evangelical culture during our last conversation. The conspicuous absence of any mention of the pending documentary during our interview, coupled with its timing, now raises serious ethical concerns.
Had I known about these circumstances, my questions would have focused on the documentary’s allegations and the church’s denominational affiliations.
Who are the folks behind this documentary?
On December 18, 2024, Maina Mwaura wrote Meet the couple behind the David Platt documentary.
When Jeremiah and Laura Burke produced their documentary about Pastor David Platt, they never imagined it would reach a global audience. Released in fall 2023, the film has garnered more than 100,000 views on Conversations that Matter alone, with additional viewership across other platforms.
…It is unusual for a group of laypeople to lead such a public revolt against their own church and pastor as what has happened at McLean, a five-campus nondenominational megachurch in suburban Washington, D.C. It is more unusual for laity to take their own church to court. And it is unheard of to create a two-part documentary series outlining grievances against the pastor.
Jeremiah Burke found out that Solomon was not allowed to come back to the church after he retired, nor was he allowed to say anything about MBC. It looks like Platt’s attorneys gave faithful Lon Solomon the SBC heave-ho and an NDA,
Burke reflected on the sudden leadership change: “For the 10 years I was at McLean, you had a solid pastor. Lon Solomon was a stalwart leader and then all of a sudden, he was gone, David came in and Lon never came back. We had been in Israel on a trip with him, he does these tours to Israel. I remember him saying, ‘I’m going to die in the pulpit. I’m not leaving this church.’”
When contacted by Baptist News Global, Solomon provided this statement: “If you have seen Part 2 of the video series, you will see that I was removed by the elders from all operational involvement at MBC early in 2017 as a part of my separation agreement. Also, as part of my separation agreement, I am not at liberty to comment on events at MBC or David Platt.”
Then, there was the surprise that MBC done gone and become Baptist, something I wrote about a year ago.
The breaking point for Burke came when he discovered the nondenominational church’s connection to the SBC, which he believed violated church bylaws prohibiting denominational affiliation. His investigation revealed McLean’s involvement with the SBC of Virginia and the North American Mission Board through church planting initiatives.
“I just started to research whether we were part of the SBC or not,” Burke said. “In December 2020, at the first congregational meeting they had in person, I remember a lady asking if we were part of the denomination and David said from the pulpit no. However, that’s not what I discovered.”
Burke became concerned and got kicked out of the church.
The discovery left Burke feeling betrayed: “I had no idea I was a Southern Baptist. I had no idea for years that I was a Southern Baptist.”
The conflict escalated to the point where Burke and his family were charged with trespassing at their own church. Determined to share his story, Burke invested $25,000 of his own money in the documentary project.
He is questioning the “funny business” of money going here and there.
Seven years after Platt’s arrival as pastor, the dispute is not resolved and Burke and other unhappy members and former members continue to press their case. Their next target is seeking to document where tens of thousands of dollars from NAMB went because they do not believe all the named church plants even exist
Of course, the church did its own investigation and declared all was well.
I suggest that everyone listen to both documentaries. This group convinced Todd and me when the first part came out. I predict that Platt will seek a new position with his BFFs in the SBC. However, the infrastructure at MBC makes them a prime target for a takeover by the SBC. This is a faceoff of two powerful groups I wish the folks behind this documentary success. I had to stop watching the video because they started talking about Pratt being corrupted with “DEI” and being “woke.” How can that be, given that Pratt is part of the organization that was founded to defend slavery and, later, Jim Crow, and which makes a point of saying women cannot be pastors?
I’m sure there are good criticisms of Pratt out there–starting with how could he be lead pastor of a church and head of a major SBC organization. But given that the people who are against Pratt have gone down the path of “DEI” and “woke,” it’s hard for me to take them seriously. I’ll tell you, the only people I dislike more than David Platt are the ones opposing him. What an entitled, self-serving group of troublemakers. I might feel a shred of sympathy for them if I hadn’t lived among them for years. It’s a clique of lawyers and former high-ranking government/military/intelligence officials who simply can’t stand not getting their way.
Their sense of entitlement spills over into every aspect of life, turning neighborhood disagreements into protracted, bitter lawsuits. It’s as if compromise is a foreign concept to them. Instead of resolving issues amicably, they weaponize their influence and resources to bulldoze over anyone who dares to stand in their way.
Frankly, it’s exhausting to watch their petty disputes escalate into legal battles that leave everyone worse off. It’s less about principles and more about maintaining power and control.

The problem with deception is that you don’t know you are deceived because you are deceived.
The American church really needs to get over “you can trust me” when it comes to the pulpit. This is particularly true of New Calvinism … NeoCal stealth and deception in taking over churches has become legendary. And just think of the bad-boy pastors who are getting exposed on a weekly basis for one perversion or another. Unfortunately, you just can’t blindly trust church leaders these days … wolves in shepherd’s clothing are out and about.
Churchgoer, pray for discernment … then keep your eyes and ears wide open. Much of discernment is just simple observation. Look for red flags. Don’t trust until you know that you know your church leaders … this might take a while.

It cost MBC $1M in legal fees (tithe money) before being forced to show that the leadership, mainly Platt, lied about the SBC connection. Chap Peterson, attorney for the “dissenters” is no fool.
I applaud TWW for posting on this. Neither CT nor Julie Roys has done so. And Platt is speaking at an event with John Piper. “When will they ever learn?”

Maybe CT didn’t want to waste their time on a lot of “woke” and “DEI” bloviation and instead is waiting for serious criticism with data backup. As I said before, how could he be pastor of McLean Bible Church and run the IMB? That’s a serious question. It appears nobody wants to answer it.
Right now it just looks like a tug-of-war between two church factions, neither of which are right but both are bound and determined to burn it all down before compromising. It’s not a good look.

As I stated earlier, when the people mad at Platt started going off on “DEI” and “woke,” I had to stop watching. I’m well outside the charmed circle of the SBC, and I can tell you that to the average person, the idea that a church organization which EXPELS churches for having women pastors is also into “DEI” and “wokeism” is simply laughable. They wouldn’t know “DEI” and “woke” from a hole in the ground. (For the record, I’m having to struggle through required DEI training at work–financial institution–and it’s annoying because I really need to work on required tech training.)
I am stating that if the people at McLean Bible Church want outsiders like me to take them seriously, they’re going to have to lose the “DEI” and “woke” attitude and come up with real data. Has he been abusing his power? If so, detail it. What about finances? Has he been spending church money on *waves hands* I have no idea. (I can’t imagine that he’s dumb enough to spend money on buying his books.) Is he changing the polity of the church to concentrate power in the pastor and an elder board? That could be a big red flag. But I’m not spending two-plus hours watching a bunch of people who are obsessed with the buzzwords of the day go off about that. It’s not worth my time. Trust me, I’d rather be bored to tears watching some guy on a video drone on about Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.

I have to agree with Muslin. I’m not dedicating 2 hours of time when just a subsection wants me to say a pox on both your houses. Now in the interest of fairness evidence of misconduct should be looked at. I also searched through churchreforminitiative.org and restoremclean.com They should be able to write up a document (no huge images of churches collapsing over a multitude of web pages as the former does) with an abstract covering the main points and the body giving details. There doesn’t seem to have been much movement in either lawsuit in the last year and a half.
