I have been in regular touch with Brenda over the last six months. She has asked me to use her full name as I tell her story. From the first time I spoke with her, I was concerned about the safety of her situation. We discussed many options, including finding a shelter for women who have been abused. I was worried about her well-being and continue to be concerned. As an example of the tremendous pressure Brenda experienced, her husband would wear a frontal body camera, like the ones the police wear, when he was in the house. This was to record all interactions with Brenda and the children. That sent chills up my spine. I believe Brenda because I have spoken with her many times, and I believe her story.
The Sons of Patriarchy with Peter Bell’s videos are scheduled to begin on 10/28, when I will be out of the country. I wanted Brenda’s story to be told since her story of the story of patriarchy as taught by Chris Gore of FBC Beggs. These teachings appear to be derived from those of Doug Wilson. I found some information that indicated that Gore graduated from high school but could not find any further degrees.
Brenda wrote the timeline of her story on Facebook, which I will use to tell her story.
From Community to Isolation
One of the characteristics of an abusive relationship or community is to isolate the victims from their support systems. Then, the church and its program will become the only place where a person will receive social input. In this case, the input was a patriarchal mindset.
Brenda is originally from Chicago and lived in Maryland after her marriage. Her husband decided to sell their house and move the family to Oklahoma. They immediately got involved with FBC Beggs, giving them their tithes. Pastor Chris Gore began to mentor Brenda’s husband, encouraging reading on Biblical manhood/ patriarchy. Gore also counseled the couple to adopt a patriarchal marital union in which the husband is the decision-maker for the family.
Brenda’s husband decided to build a homestead on 20 acres of land in a remote area. Coincidentally, FBC Beggs is in that small rural town. They have only one neighbor. Brenda did not wish to live in such a remote area. As time went on, the isolation affected both her and their children. Even if Brenda disagreed, Pastor Gore encouraged her husband to build on that land. She was counseled to follow her husband in everything and to suffer for God’s glory when she disagrees.
From Complementarianism to Patriarchy/ Federal Husbandry and Control of the Wife.
Chris encouraged Brenda’s husband to read Masculine Christianity and convert from Complementarianism to Patriarchy. The author, Zachary Garris, teaches that a woman’s very being is incapable and inferior because “Eve was deceived and Adam was not.” Hence, she needs a leader who is not deceived. Everything is viewed through the lens of authority and submission.
The views of Doug Wilson enter into this mess. Brenda asserts:
Chris Gore is a devout follower of Doug Wilson. In his book, Federal Husband, Doug Wilson states that “men must assume full spiritual responsibility for the household, including any wifely negligence to submit in: spending habits, television viewing habits, laziness in cleaning the house, and lack of responsiveness to sexual advances.” He believes such a husband must confess failure in leading his wife, outline clear expectations, and repeatedly point out her failures. If she complies, “he must move up a step, requiring another of her duties be done, but if she continues to “rebel”, it’s appropriate to call in the church elders.”
Brenda says it is all about controlling the wife because the husband will asked to give an account for her on “Judgement Day.”
Doug Wilson’s Federal marriage mindset is that a husband is responsible in a feudal way to answer to God for everything that happens in his household, including his wife’s thoughts and deeds, and so if he’s going to account for her behavior on “Judgment Day”, he has to find a way to keep her under control. He states: “The woman is a constantly frustrated rival to the man because her desire will be to constantly try to usurp the authority of her husband, but in the end, her attempts to usurpation will come to nothing, and he will rule over her. Patriarchy is the standard, and it cannot be erased.” The ideology is that men must dominate because he believes women want to.
So, it is all about control and discipline.
Can you imagine being forced to live in a remote area and watching your husband slowly embrace this teaching?
Chris Gore teaches men how to control their wives, although he would call it “leadership” (because control is a bad word). He does this by encouraging domestic discipline (not wife-spanking as is the general belief, but more covert means such as withholding finances, alienating her from her children, invading her privacy, forcing her into seclusion/ isolation, even threats of homelessness and “sending her away”, aka divorce, etc.). The responsibility falls on the wife and children because as Chris puts it: “Leadership fizzles in a house of rebellion. You can’t teach men to lead without first teaching women how to be led, and you can’t teach fathers to lead without first teaching children how to be led.” He would never admit to counseling domestic discipline because it’s too embarrassing to talk about, but it’s what he believes men have the authority and rightful duty to do. I know this because my children and I are living this nightmare.
By July 2023, Brenda is depressed, and the church and her husband pile it on.
Sex:
Brenda receives an email discussing the need to have more sex with her husband. She is told, “There is nobody in the world that can help with this, but you.” It also stated that her husband loved her. This email comes at a time when Brenda is hurting due to being isolated in rural OK, being away from friends and family, and watching her husband prioritize his dreams over her needs. While she is suffering and feeling like she is losing her husband, she is expected to “perform”.
She discovered the well-known Doug Wilson meme.
She connects the dots with Chris’ counsel and Doug Wilson’s teachings and learns that Wilson’s teachings radicalize men, that sex is idolized, and that “Christian” men find their fulfillment in their testosterone rather than in Christ. Doug is noted for saying, “the sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party. A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts.” Authority and submission, he holds, “are therefore an erotic necessity.” I
The all-knowing pastor
Only Brenda is lying…
Chris also told Brenda that he “always prays before counseling meetings and asks God to show him who is lying.”
Her husband records all their conversations and restricts who she can speak with.
Cyber-hacking is initiated, and Brenda is told not to communicate with certain people. Conversations with her are being recorded and she discovers they’ve been recorded and saved for many years.
Finances are now under her husband’s total control.
Finances are being withheld from Brenda, and she’s told her access to money is based on conditions.
Her husband refused to spend more time with the family and instituted unlimited male rule in their marriage.
Her husband finished building his “dream house.”
Brenda asks her husband to finally spend time with the family now that the house is finished being built. He replies, “You will not force me to spend time with the family.”
The 14-page paper.
Brenda’s husband writes a 14-page paper on his conversion, emphasizing “unlimited male rule” and “gender specific weaknesses”, while stating why he believes hard complementarianism is too weak. The paper also states: “A wife who does not submit will be dealt with by God because she is rebelling against her husband,” who has “authority over her.” He writes an email to Brenda stating he cannot compromise his convictions on marriage. In that email he also asks, “Can we please give it 30 consecutive days of letting God work through us and in us? There is nothing we can lose. Let’s do that for the sake of our marriage, our kids, and grand-kids and generations down.” Brenda was very confused by this email as his actions seemed the opposite of his words.
Divorce proceedings. Brenda is financially destitute.
Brenda took the kids to visit family for one month. When she returned, she was not allowed in the house, and her husband began a divorce proceeding with the approval of the church. Her husband wanted full custody of the kids even though he had not spent much time with them. She was banned from attending church, which she did for the children’s sake. She was finally allowed in the house with the children. Since he conducted business, her husband was allowed to spend a certain amount of time in the house.
Body cams and cameras
Brenda discovered a camera in the house. Then her husband notched it up.
MAY 2024: For 6 months, while in litigation, Brenda’s husband entered the marital home every weekday wearing a body camera to intimidate Brenda while she homeschooled their children. It resulted in severe disturbance of the peace, causing trauma in the children. Brenda had to use her protective capacities so that when the kids would become agitated, she would need to bring them to a safe space in the house behind closed doors so that they could deescalate. FBC Beggs leadership knew about the body cam and supported it. Brenda’s husband also praises Doug Wilson in front of the children.
I feel like I have skipped over so much in this story. It deserves 2-3 posts since it is a case study on the misapplication of Scripture leading to the destruction of a family. More women who have been hurt in this church are coming forward, as are women who have experienced similar stories in other churches. Please read her Facebook page in its entirety.
Let’s end on Brenda’s timeline.
SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER 2024: Brenda’s family has paid her attorney $35K so far in legal expenses, and a lawyer projects “this will go into the 6-figures” because her husband is unwilling to compromise on anything, while Brenda has agreed to almost everything he has asked for except for the children. Brenda has been a stay-at-home/ homeschool Mom for 14 years while she supported her husband’s career. She only recently got a job working outside the home as a paraprofessional at a school.
For almost one year now, Brenda cannot contact her children when they are with their Dad half of the time because their flip phones are locked in a safe whenever they are with him. Having Mom out of their lives is being normalized.
To date, the men of FBC Beggs and her husband have yet to sit down with Brenda to have a discussion about why the accusations have been made against her and how they came to their conclusions. Meanwhile, Brenda’s husband has taken her to court 4 times, and there’s another hearing next week.
Brenda has tried over the course of many months to give the men of FBC Beggs the benefit of the doubt. She was willing to be wrong if it meant keeping her family together. However, over time she realized nothing was good enough because their beliefs about Brenda were based on a faulty premise of deeply rooted theological falsehoods about her, so Brenda was expected to “repent” and “show contrition” for motives she never had and for things she never did. Brenda remains open to dialoguing with the men of FBC Beggs should they ever humble themselves, regard Brenda as a whole human being with value, apologize to her and her family, and be interested in bringing the truth into the light.

Free to those experiencing low income… which should include Brenda since she is experiencing financial abuse, coercive control, and a long list of causes for civil action, including the divorce. Her children may also be eligible for various state services as their father’s behavior could be considered abuse and / or neglect. (To be clear: it is absolutely abuse and neglect… I just don’t know what an attorney in Oklahoma needs to demonstrate for a judge to declare that it meets the state definitions of abuse and neglect.) Also recording a spouse without consent or knowledge is super important to mention. And Oklahoma may have statues defining spousal rape. Preventing a spouse from entering their home could be a denial of food and shelter, a form of cruelty. Locking her or her children in any space could be confinement… the list goes on. If this man still has hours of video, it should be turned over as evidence before he can destroy it.

One of the hardest things to get across with dealing with victims of abuse is this: the abuser has no desire to change, no incentive to change, and is unlikely to change. As long as the victim keeps trying, keeps praying for things to get better, or keeps clinging to fixing the relationship, things will only get worse.
The sad truth is Brenda could lose her kids or even her life. She must reach out to those resources listed above for help.

Statistically the most dangerous time for victims of intimate partner violence is when they are trying to leave. The rates of homicide increase and the rates of homicides and suicide increase. Some abusive men will kill their own children before they choose suicide in order to maximize the suffering of their partner or former partner.

This is why safety planning, done with the assistance of professionals and experts, is crucial!

That is why I am hoping anyone who knows Brenda directly can help her get in contact with Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma… like TODAY, not tomorrow, not next week… she needs to start an intake as soon as possible because so they can start gathering facts and figure out if one of their lawyers can take her as a client. This takes time, and so should be started ASAP!

Also, many civil legal aid organizations can also point victims / survivors / those with lived experience to social workers who can help vulnerable people make safety plans. This increases survival rates.

I got it from an American video. An unlicensed industry was taking in a USD 5,000 enrolment fee per parent plus USD 700 per 24 hours to take children whose parents don’t like them from their beds, one child was dead in less than 24 hours and countless have complained. One goes to what one thought would be a Bible study in someone’s home, it is a mixture of subtle and blatant shenanigans, it takes days to mentally unpack what one has eyewitnesed. I went there for others’ sake but we got split into micro-groups under a superior, so I couldn’t contact them. I’ve known it before and unfortunately the fad has come round again. I thought christians were equal with each other but “God” is not the same yesterday and today.
