Folks, On October 26, I will head to Iceland for a bit of aurora hunting. Thankfully, some folks will live at my house to care for the pugs. Unfortunately, Iceland can be a very wet country, and we will be going from place to place outside most of the time. I am unsure if I will subject my computer, which I call “My precious,” to the environment. That means I may be out of pocket for most of the time. Posts will occur as usual, but approving comments will be super slow, even more so than normal. Please hang in there.

Things are about to get hot in Moscow, Idaho. I bet Doug Wilson and the boys are smoking cigars, sipping port, and chatting with Figg, Niggem, & Stinkem while longing for the days when elders could be consulted when wives refused to rinse their dishes properly. Dadgummit! It all started with giving them the vote!

I am suitably impressed that someone has the guts to take a long and hard look at Doug Wilson, whom John Piper and The Gospel Coalition once openly admired. Today, nary a post by Wilson was found at TGC. He goes the way of Mark Driscoll and just as quietly. Like Mark Driscoll, he continues just as loudly. Unlike Driscoll, he has had a lot more influence and is the subject of controversy and concern.

I have recently been talking with a woman who has experienced spousal abuse. She was a member of a church that admires all things Wilson. Wilson is on the record that he does not support abuse of women and children. When I write her story, it will bring some clarity to the issues surrounding patriarchy.

Though these ideas have filtered throughout the United States for decades, they found a home in Moscow, Idaho, through the ministry and work of Doug Wilson. From there, they have influenced churches across the United States, and across the world. The podcasts will start on October 28. Peter Bell says November will be exciting as he dives deep into Doug Wilson. Given Bell’s subject matter, this series is going to be fascinating. Be prepared. Wilson will fight back in one way or another.

    I thought the following Time article that I picked off Dee’s Twitter was very applicable to this post….

    The article is titled Declared Insane for Speaking Up: The Dark American History of Silencing Women Through Psychiatry, written by Kate Moore, dated June 22, 2021. Kate Moore is the author of the book The Woman They Could Not Silence.

    What Kate Moore wrote isn’t new to me….many years ago, I read a book by Robert Whitaker titled Mad In America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine, and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill….the book covered a slightly different angle of forcing people into “insane asylums”.

    While Robert Whitaker — and the website he started (I’ve not read it for a number of years) — MIGHT come across as anti-psychiatry and / or anti-psychiatric medication, he (and they) really aren’t. Most of the people involved have been badly abused, traumatized, and mis-diagnosed….people who’ve gotten forced into a system from which they can’t get out….people who’ve been forcibly — and unnecessarily — medicated against their will….something they consider the equivalent of rape. And when you read their stories, it IS rape….they’re stripped of their clothes, thrown on a guerney (or on the tile floor), and forcibly jabbed with a needle full of a MASSSIVE dose of some kind of psychiatric medication.

    And just the other night, on the evening news, they mentioned a study that said so many seniors are vastly overmedicated — again, something that isn’t new. Seniors have, for many different reasons, been overmedicated for years (multiple meanings intended). And it’s been reported on for years (again, multiple meanings intended).

    Many years ago, I read a book that mentioned the origin of the word (and name) “bedlam”….

    Bethlem Royal Hospital, also known as St Mary Bethlehem, Bethlehem Hospital and Bedlam, is a psychiatric hospital in Bromley, London. Its famous history has inspired several horror books, films, and TV series, most notably Bedlam, a 1946 film with Boris Karloff….The word “bedlam”, meaning uproar and confusion, is derived from the hospital’s nickname.     We had a fun protest at my Lutheran church this week. The text was 1 Samuel Chapter One. Guy has two wives, and they compete for his favor; one is forgotten by God because she doesn’t have children. She is sad, so her husband accuses her of being drunk…

    None of the confirmation-aged girls or their moms attended the Wednesday night service. Instead, they sat at the fellowship table in the Narthix and watched the service online on a large tv that we use for Christmas and easter overflow.

    I was impressed. They calmly said this portrait of women doesn’t represent us. So we will sit this one out.

    For some background: For us, during the school year, the Wednesday night service is part of the confirmation classes and adult enducation. There is a family-style meal, church, and confirmation classes or adult small group classes. The majority of confirmation students and their families attend that night.
