“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” JRR Tolkien

Things are progressing on the Melissa Hobson story, and we hope to be able to tell you soon. Also, today, I spoke with some folks abused in the Assemblies of God church and plan to write about it soon. On Friday, I shall tell you of my remarkable visit to Reformation Fellowship in Boston. Talk about lemonade from lemons…

The following is the official film For Our Daughters.

This is how it is described on the official website.

From Kristin Kobes Du Mez, the creator/author of Jesus and John Wayne, comes a powerful new documentary highlighting how a culture of submission and sexual abuse in the evangelical church ties directly to the Christian nationalist quest to use the outcome of the 2024 election to deprive all American women of basic democratic rights. FOR OUR DAUGHTERS speaks to all women of faith, encouraging them to use their voices and their votes to ensure that their daughters will have the rights to health and happiness guaranteed to all Americans.

The film is not meant to be viewed alone. The documentary comes with an official discussion guide that challenges viewers to think. Here are a few of those questions.

FOR OUR DAUGHTERS is based on a chapter of the book Jesus and John
Wayne by Kristin Du Mez and explores the culture of toxic power in the
church. If you are part of a faith tradition, have you seen examples of this
in churches you’ve attended? If so, what did this look like?

If you were raised in a faith community, did your experience in the church
shape your own aspirations, whether you married, whom you married, or
how you raised sons and daughters?

Often, Christian teaching aimed at women focuses on what women are not
allowed to do. Yet the Bible is filled with women who are strong, brave,
and defy cultural and religious expectations. In the film, Pastor Len points
to how Jesus himself was gentle toward women. What Scriptural examples
of women’s strength and dignity come to mind for you?

Regular readers of this blog will recognize some of the women featured in the film.

Jules Woodson’s movingly describes the standing ovation that Andy Savage received after he admitted to molesting her on a dark road when he was her youth pastor. He briefly stepped down from his Church and is now, once again, a pastor. He obviously believes that he is qualified to do so, while I, and many others, feel he traded in his preacher card when he abused her.

Jules’ story made international news when her abuser, then pastor of a mega church, received a standing ovation after acknowledging her experience. Since that time, Jules has become a nationally recognized advocate for sexual abuse victims in the church. Dubbed “the face of the #churchtoo movement” and “one of 10 women who are changing the Southern Baptist response to abuse” Jules’ advocacy has been a driving force in reforming the church’s institutional response to sexual abuse.

Christa Brown is the woman I call the “Daughter of Stan Emeritus.” She was in the battle before all of us.

She was one of the first to go public with substantiated child sex abuse allegations against a Baptist minister, along with documentation that others knew, and she has consistently demanded reforms to make other kids and congregants safer. She’s a retired appellate attorney, a mom, and a grandma. And she’s the author of the new book, Baptistland: A Memoir of Abuse, Betrayal, and Transformation.

Tiffany Thigpen’s story of abuse at the hands of Darrel Gilyard is described vividly in the film.

Raised within the Southern Baptist Convention and driven by her own experiences as a survivor as a teen, Tiffany began her public quest in 2007. She has used her voice and personal experience to expose the abuse and lack of accountability within religious communities.

Cait West is an expert on the subject of Christian patriarchy.

As an advocate and a survivor of the Christian patriarchy movement, she serves on the editorial board for Tears of Eden, a nonprofit providing resources for survivors of spiritual abuse, and cohosts the podcast Survivors Discuss. She is the author of Rift: A Memoir of Breaking Away from Christian Patriarchy.

Rachel Denhollander needs no introduction.

Possessing a unique blend of professional skills, personal experiences, and dynamic communication style, she is a sought-after media commentator, speaker, and consultant. Her grasp of legal issues, corporate ethics, effective leadership strategies, and investigative practices are coupled with a trauma-informed, deeply compassionate understanding of the realities facing survivors of sexual abuse and their path toward healing. She is the author of What Is A Girl Worth?

Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez, author of Jesus and John Wayne, is increasingly well-known throughout the survivor community.

(She) is a New York Times bestselling author and Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. She holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame and her research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics.

The film also features input by Sheila Gregoire, whose book She Deserves Better:

By reframing (and sometimes replacing) common evangelical messages to teen girls, this book will equip you to raise a girl who can navigate the difficult waters of growing up while still clinging tight to the God who created her on purpose, for a purpose.

The FAQ page is full of excellent resources as well.

Du Mez is a signer of the Christian Faith and Democracy Statement, which believes that the American Church and democracy are in crisis. I might quibble a bit with the limitations of this statement. I believe that the Church mixes politics in many cultures of the world and that the disturbing trends seen here in the US are being felt all over the globe. She also includes Our Confession of Evangelical Conviction, which TWW discussed here.

Finally, I agree with many that Christian nationalism is not Christian. I also believe this election cycle has been challenging for many, and I join them in looking forward to its end.

    From the main article up-top:
    “What Scriptural examples
of women’s strength and dignity come to mind for you?”

I like the story of Jael and how she fixed Sisera’s wagon but good.

The quote by Tolkin is one of my favorites from the trilogy

    Muff Potter,

Haha. I was thinking of that very story, but couldn’t remember the participant’s names. I also didn’t remember any story about a wagon! I looked it up and (doh!) it was the story I was thinking of. And yes, she did “fix his wagon” as they say. Gotta love the English language.

    Jeffrey Chalmers,

That is pobably my favorite quote in the LoTR series.

I think my favorite story is about Queen Esther. Strength, Bravery, and dignity in approaching the king not knowing how he would respond – and it could have gone really badly for her.

So many wonderful biblical women. Ruth left her own culture to follow the true God, took care of both herself and her mother-in-law, and risked her safety to approach Boaz.
Abigail did not “submit herself in all things” to her terrible husband and thus saved both the servants and David from bad stuff.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was young, poor, humiliated— but she rejoiced in being chosen to given birth to the Savior.

When Christians and churches get defensive about sexual abuse allegations it shows one thing: the dignity of men is more valuable than the dignity of women to them. The patriarchy and power systems need to preserved and the cost is the women and children who are abused (and, occasionally, men).

Take King David, for example. When one of his sons raped one of his daughters, he chose to give grace to his son at the expense of his daughter. This led to the collapse of his family and the rebellion of Absalom.

As more and more light has come on the shenanigans within the SBC, we took an action this summer I hope more people take: we updated our estate planning in part to remove any bequest to any SBC agency. One had been in there. They are no more.

If you have charitable giving in your estate planning, please make sure you are not leaving something to someone who would hurt either your daughters OR your sons.

That video trailer was heartbreaking to watch. I pray these women in the video, and those who have suffered like them, will experience supernatural healing.

As a man and a Christian this was very thought provoking and to a degree very hard to watch. These women’s stories showed how bad the church can be when they value power more than their love for Christ. It should be shown in every church to everyone. I do believe had Andy Savage’s church seen this documentary first, many would not have stood to clap when he confessed.
Then the documentary went political with Donald Trump who already is divisive. Why bring politics into it? This documentary was about the churches and their decisions that took advantage of trust these women had in the leadership and the institutions they represented. Now you mix politics in it and in the end it looks like an ad for voting for Harris. Bringing in politics takes away the focus from the women’s pain and suffering and put the focus on a whole different issue. ( BTW I have never voted for Trump and for equal time let’s not forget Bill Clinton and what he allegedly did to a young impressionable intern including the infamous cigar chapter) .
IMHO she should have made 2 documentaries, one for each issue and kept the religious issue at the forefront. .m
I have a wide circle of Christian men and women friends and no one I know believes in Christian Nationalism. There have many articles and sermons given denouncing CN as contrary to scripture. While disturbing to hear their words about women’s rights to the best of my knowledge, CN is a still a minority belief system I also don’t believe that non Christian’s and the secular courts would tolerate their politics, after all they vastly outnumber Christians.

Observant Outsider: When Christians and churches get defensive about sexual abuse allegations it shows one thing: the dignity of men is more valuable than the dignity of women to them.

Plus when you throw a rock into a pack of feral junkyard dogs, the ones that YELP! are the ones who got hit.

Darlene: That video trailer was heartbreaking to watch. I pray these women in the video, and those who have suffered like them, will experience supernatural healing.

And I hope those women will up and leave those kinds of environments.
Women are the stronger of our species, and in this day and age, there is not reason one, why they should stay in abusive relationships/and or marriages.
There have been many women who have left abusive relationships and marriages, and went on to become very successful.

I suspect the story and precedent of the Virgin Mary does not help in these situations.

She is after all an innocent young woman impregnated by an elder male authority figure, expected to submit to surrogate motherhood without consultation, against the free will of her husband, offered flamboyant promises (Mother of God!), then hounded into flight by a murderous patriarchy, only to have her only son murdered supposedly by the will of God. At which point she disappears from the narrative except in legends, which assure us of her perpetual virginity (highly doubtful according to the narrative context) as a sign of perfect virtue.

I never bought any of it.
    Neither should any young person.

    Lowlandseer: domestic abuse

For some, unlike Jesus their assumption of position means power over others, in the worst possible way.

“‘Power is like drinking gin on an empty stomach.’ You feel dizzy, you get drunk, you lose your balance and you will end up hurting yourself and those around you, if you do not connect your power with humility and tenderness.” – Argentinian saying quoted by Pope Francis. 2017 TED talk.

oh, the woman depicted on Proverbs 31 is pretty cool.

self-made entrepreneur and businesswoman. gotta be assertive, confident, independent, and willing to confront to pull those off.

and since she has a good reputation, these things threatened/bugged no one nor their theology.

however, none of this sounds like christian culture to me.

the ironies never cease with this silly religion of mine.

This video shows that male authority of patriarchy has led to much abuse and division in the church. Those who believe women are on equal spiritual basis with men are often derided, called names and judged as spiritually lacking. Those who follow patriarchy and all its made up rules aimed solely at women are subject to abuse from wolves who have been attracted to christianity because of those “rules” women submit, obey, be silent.

case in point—and it is shameful There is a highly respected teacher of women in the southern baptist church. She believes that women should not preach/pastor or teach men and has very harsh words towards women who do. She influences many women.

In a youtube video discussing if women should or should not attend seminary she allowed that woman could attend seminary but with certain restrictions as to what classes they could take.

But here is the egregious part. She states that any women taking classes meant for pastors/preachers even though she may never pastor or preach was just like someone learning how to do abortions even though they may never do them. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that the seminary allowing women to take these classes was sinning and needed to repent!!!!!!

That is the most outrageous thing I ever heard come out of a christian’s mouth to basically compare a woman wanting to learn of spiritual things of God to being a murderer!!!!!!!!!!!!

And we wonder why the world hates christianity. They do not see us practicing love as Jesus preached.

“What Scriptural examples of women’s strength and dignity come to mind for you?”

All that comes to mind are the many many rules that have been foisted on women in the church from birth, deciding that they can only be mothers, servants to husbands and keepers at thim.

It is way past time that something is done “for our daughters

    Susan,

“And we wonder why the world hates christianity. They do not see us practicing love as Jesus preached.”
    ++++++++++++++

i refer to such human beings as reasonable with their God-given common sense intact & functioning.

when observing christian church culture, there is plenty of good reason to say no thanks to christianity.

none of this has anything to do with Jesus of Nazareth.

Chuckp: Why bring politics into it?

Evangelism as publicity industry stunt since the Fundamentals (the new maximum) (see Guaranteed Pure, a book by Tim Gloege)

William James’ corner-cutting bad pragmatism and Bismarck’s Religionsstreit

    Moralising as brownie point hunting

No need for double action Holy Spirit: ration God!

Men are “meant to do as men are meant to do”, to women and boys

Have legislatures actually banned abortions which were a fallback for girls and women badly done by? It would be interesting if any of them would claim to do so as secular atheists
