Brian and Bobbie Houston need money…

This post will be short and not so sweet. The Christian Post published Brian and Bobbie Houston’s statement that the new ministry Jesus Followers is in ‘desperate’ need of a production studio. Most of us know the story of Houston’s rise and fall, so let’s focus on his return. The boy needs your hard-earned and increasingly vanishing extra cash. Or perhaps you might forgo food and send that money to them.

unveiling their new Jesus Followers online ministry, which they say is now in “desperate” need of a television production studio.

“This is going to be a faith ministry, and I’m really believing God will give us a big powerful group of partners who will stand with us in the building of Jesus Followers,” Brian Houston said in a recent broadcast from Motor City Church in Detroit, Michigan.

“Because, like anything, we’re building a new ministry, we’re building a new church, and frankly we’re starting with nothing, and we’ve got desperate needs.”

Do they have desperate needs? Is that really true?

“Right now we’re on the other side of the country from where Bobbie and I are based at the moment, but we can’t do that every single time,” he continued. “We’re believing God for a studio, and that comes with the need for not only television cameras but production crew, people to operate those cameras and people to work with us in production. … It’s a faith venture, and I believe as people partner and give, that you can help us make a difference.”

That’s right. You, too, can make a difference by giving him the Benjamins. He’s even considering doing leadership training, which many pastors are doing to gain access to corporate businesspersons with extra cash who want to learn how to be effective, “godly” leaders.

Josh Shepherd at The Roys Report wrote Hillsong Founders Brian & Bobbie Houston Launch ‘Online Church’ & Ask for Money.

Houston called Jesus Followers TV  “a new church, a new community—and it’s online and it’s global (with) people all around the world.” He closed with an offering call, saying, “This is going to be a faith ministry, and I’m really believing God will give us a big, powerful group of partners.”

The Houstons claim they have nothing! The con is on!

In other words, the Houstons will find those donors in places like Dubai, the Philippines, and Tahiti. But poor Brian and Bobbie claim they are starting with nothing. Is that true?

“Frankly, we’re starting with nothing and we’ve got desperate needs,” he added. “We’re believing God for a studio, and that comes with the need for not only television cameras but production crew . . . There’s television lights needed and LED screens and so many things.”

It looks like they have at least $14 million, and it seems that a Minister of Parliament is wondering about their lavish spending in the past. For example, how much did they sock away during their opulent Hillsong days? I bet that finding that out is about as difficult as figuring out how much Robert Morris got and is even getting from Gateway.

In late 2022, the Houstons reportedly sold their home in Sydney’s Hills District for $4.5 million along with two long-held luxurious apartments on Australia’s popular Bondi Beach.

Since then, Australian Member of Parliament Andrew Wilkie has launched an investigation into the Houstons’ alleged lavish spending during their years leading Hillsong. Wilkie noted frequent vacations and how the Houstons “treated private jets like Ubers, again all with church money.”

The con is on, and I want to know if anyone is giving them money. If anyone from TWW gives, I will declare myself an utter failure.

Carl and Laura Lentz

I first looked into what was happening with them and found this on Instagram. It appears Carl and Laura were yachting with friends in Greece.

Will Lentz consider being a pastor? IMO-possibly.

Lentz has supposedly said he will not pastor again. But here are some quotes from People Magazine, which posted Carl Lentz Can’t Picture Being Pastor Again After Weathering Scandal: ‘Don’t Have That in My Heart’ (Exclusive). Does this sound like someone who is out of the pastor business?

“I don’t have that in my heart to do,” says Carl, 45. Still, he says that he doesn’t “tell God big absolutes like I will or won’t do anything. I’m always open.”

…“If someday, I feel really compelled to do a church, then I would consider it with the help and support of a lot of people who would also agree,” he explains. But I can’t picture myself doing it.”

He is a church strategist.

Lentz works as a “strategist” for Transformation Church in South Carolina. What is a strategist?

The family now attend the Transformation Church, a Tulsa-based church led by pastors Michael and Natalie Todd, according to its website.

…Carl even works as a strategist for TC, a role he says “sticks directly” to his strengths. The former pastor began working for TC shortly after he and his family joined the church in February 2023.

Hmmm, strategist? Could he be advising the church on how to grow its membership and its monetary intake? Isn’t that something he did at Hillsong NYC? I went to Transformation Church’s website and could not find Lentz in the staff section. A search for his name on the website produced no results. I wonder how much he is being paid. Transformation members should ask how much of their “tithe” goes to “strategy.”

Carl and Laura are doing podcasts and videos, one of which features a questionable physician.

It seems that he is drawing on his experience as a pastor in the social media arena. Here is a link to their YouTube videos, which are found in a paid app called the B-Side. Here is a link to the Lentz podcast Lights On with Carl Lentz.  Here is one rather curious episode dealing with brain health.

The Daily Beast wrote about Dr. Amen in Brain Doctor to the Stars Labeled a ‘Snake-Oil’ Salesman.

When you see somebody who is so transparently grifting people and selling people snake oil, this person needs to be called out,” Dr. Sulman Aziz Mirza, a psychiatrist whose practice is near Amen’s Reston, Virginia, clinic, told The Daily Beast.

At the core of Amen’s business model is a brain-scanning technology known as single-photon emission computerized tomography or SPECT scanning. It is a form of nuclear medicine that involves injecting the patient with a radioactive substance and then using a SPECT scanner to take images of blood flow in the brain. Amen says these images can be used as part of a diagnosis that sets his methods apart from other psychiatrists and mental health practitioners.

…“It’s preying on vulnerabilities,” Mirza says. “There isn’t a medical utility for these, the way they are being used.”

He is also critical of Amen’s supplement company, BrainMD, which produces many of the products he recommends in his clinics and on social media to improve brain health.

“It’s fantastic business,” says Mirza. “but it’s terrible ethically.”

Curious.

Carl has transitioned back to his former appearance.

Here is the final evidence that convinced me that Lentz is gearing up to present himself as the epitome of a cool pastor. After his spectacular fall at Hillsong, he looked like a mess, with long, stringy hair and obvious weight gain. Not so now. Although I am glad to see him taking care of his physical appearance, I wonder if he is trying to recreate the cool factor he demonstrated in his previous life at Hillsong.Time will tell. I predict he finds a way to make lots of money, be it in the pulpit or podcasts.

Dee, I attended Transformation Church in SC for a year about 10 years ago. The founder is Derwin Gray, a former professional football player for the Colts and the Carolina Panthers. He’s not in any way affiliated with the Transformation Church in Tulsa, and I could never see him needing a church strategist and certainly not one like Lenz. Another bit of noteworthy information, is that Greg Atkinson of First Worship Impressions, whom you’ve mentioned before, was the campus pastor in Transformation Rock Hill satellite for a brief while. Greg is the author of a new book, The Secret Power of Kindness, which I find astounding given the way he treated my husband many many years ago. His schtick now is making the church sensitive to mental illness, which I guess is a pass for treating people badly. By the way, I’m very happy to hear of your good medical report. Mine was not so good.

A comment on a tangential issue in the OP:

I have the impression that the placebo effect is real and can be quite strong. It would be nice if there were reasonably priced custom-formulated supplement blends that, even if they do little else (though I think that many “natural” formulations made with plant extracts do have potentially beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties), do exert a placebo effect. I think that these blends are not expensive to produce. Doctor-branded products in my experience tend to be very expensive; it has the “feel” of the Big Pharma business model (monopoly profit on new products under patent or trademark protection), applied to supplements.

I would be suspicious of products that promise remarkable results at a high price.

Regarding brain health more generally, one’s health-promotion $ might be well-spent on high-quality respiratory protection. The coronavirus can get into the brain and cause damage there.

There is a LOT of literature on this subject. A PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) search on the terms — COVID brain health review — yields more than 1400 results.

Here’s a sample recent review article on the subject:

    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39133434/

According to this review, neurological complications of COVID are not uncommon.

    ======

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s also much, much cheaper, given trends in the cost of medical therapies.

I recognize that this is controversial, but I think there is a lot to be said for using higher-performance respiratory protections such as N95 respirators. These are widely considered to be ineffective, but the Cochrane study that seems to be the basis of this view was seriously misinterpreted

     https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-went-wrong-with-a-highly-publicized-covid-mask-analysis/

FWIW, I have found 3M Aura 9205+ and 9210+ respirators to fit well and to provide excellent filtration even when not fit-tested (verifiable during wildfire smoke episodes, for example). They don’t fit every face shape equally well, however. They can be re-used a number of times; the 9205+ is less durable in my experience as the rubber-band head strap tends to snap with repeated use; 9210+ has elastic cloth straps that relax but do not snap with repeated use.

Dee, there is nothing wrong with making money. Carl cannot help but be cool. That’s just him. He is showing off his queen, to show that he is satisfied and he is lucky to have her. This is a redemptive story plain and simple. Carl is also being far more real and transparent, so maybe he hit bottom. Now he is making a comeback, but this time he will use his his cool only for Kingdom purposes. Hey, its possible.

    Nah.
Carl is now Scripturally disqualified from ministry. If he wants to use his life for Kingdom purposes, he will go get a job to the glory of God.
And yes there is something wrong with making money if by “making” you mean “begging it off of the sheeple who actually work for a living just so you can keep living the high life.”

    Clericalism…

True. But, the problem is that Mr. Lentz, and a multitude of fallen “pastors” like him, can always find a “church” who prefer leaders who walk and talk no better than they do … it makes them feel better about themselves. Cheap grace abounds in the American church. I have no doubt that we will see both Mr. Houston and Mr. Lentz return to the stage with a standing ovation. When will this madness end?!

    Headless Unicorn Guy,

If you take a “big picture” view of Christiandome, it actually reminds me of the children of Isreal… or just people in general.. many, many people do not want to take personal responisbility for themselves.. to easy to just do what our “fearless leader”, or our “spiritual guide”, or whatever title you want to come up with, tells us to do…
Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have “thought for myself” for to long.. in middle and high school, so much of what the fundies told me just did not “make sense”, and boy they did not like it when I questioned it..

Now, we have people that are very “image focused”, hense the guy above posting all the photos of himself with his squeeze.. I guess that is supposed to make we want to listen to him???

Max–praying for you and Mrs. Max. During your down time I would ask prayers for a dear friend of mine battling some long term health issues. Also and on a much lesser scale, for me. Allergies and reflux have my ears giving me fits. Changed meds this week and hoping they kick in and solve the problem.

Dee–still praying for your recovery from surgery, for your daughter and grandbaby, and for your back surgery “eventually.”

Many pastors use their charisma and persona for God. They do so understanding that they are able to bring many people to God. They use the platform given to them, not for personal gain, but out of honest desire to persuade and help more people come to and experience Jesus. We could list lots of pastors who have successfully done this without compromising their integrity.

Is there a diff b/w a cult of personality, with a person primarily motivated by $, sex, or power… And a pastor who uses fame for Christ? Educate me.

Watcher: Is there a diff b/w a cult of personality, with a person primarily motivated by $, sex, or power… And a pastor who uses fame for Christ?

IMO, there’s a vast difference between someone who “goes into ministry” vs. one who is “called into ministry”. Someone who chooses to make ministry a career often has an agenda outside the Great Commission (many of them end up as subjects of TWW posts). Those who feel a calling by God on their lives are motivated to please God alone … to serve Him, rather than serving themselves. Fame and charisma are not bad things, if they are channeled properly. Paul put it this way when crowds were drawn to the disciples’ message and ministry:

“For we are not like many, acting like merchants peddling God’s word shortchanging and adulterating God’s message; but from pure uncompromised motives, as commissioned and sent from God, we speak His message in Christ in the sight of God.” (2 Corinthians 2:17 AMP)

linda: I would ask prayers for a dear friend of mine battling some long term health issues. Also and on a much lesser scale, for me. Allergies and reflux have my ears giving me fits. Changed meds this week and hoping they kick in and solve the problem.

Praying for you, Linda, and for your friend. 🙂

    researcher,

My wife (Brenda) confirmed positive for Covid this morning. When it rains, it pours … but we are comforted knowing Jesus is with us in the midst of the storm. Please keep Brenda on your prayer list … she has other health issues and doesn’t need Covid … and pray for me, I’m her caregiver – she may get tired of soup.

    A WORD OF WARNING:

This has nothing to do with your politics or religion, but purely health common sense in view of a very persistent bug called Covid. You might consider wearing a mask when out and about in your communities. Since the pandemic, we have worn masks during cold & flu season. I thought August was too early to put them on, that Covid wouldn’t be a problem now. Well, it is … and cases are on the increase. I am pretty sure I got my dose of Covid at the bank last week, when a young lady sat across from me at her desk during a transaction, coughing her lungs out in my face. It was too late to go to the truck to get my mask. Covid symptoms came on 3 days later.

    Max,

I am sorry to hear this, and am frustrated on how COVID, like so much in our country, gets politicized..

    Jeffrey J Chalmers,

Viruses don’t care what political party you belong to or if you think the Church should be separated from the State during public health crises … they don’t give a hoot about your religious affiliation or what you think about vaccinations. They will infect you just the same if you give them the chance.

Max–praying for you and your wife! Hubby and I are isolating because covid is very high in our county right now. We hope to be able to get the new shots next week, then in two weeks he will be getting his driver’s license renewed, and if my ears are still giving me fits I may have to go to the doc. I never thought we would see the day when you sit and weigh the benefits of getting medical help vs the very real danger of taking an exposure to a disease that might off you. (I know it is less deadly now. But a bad round of pneumonia years ago had the docs tell me then that for the rest of my life I should avoid even the common cold due to the damage I took. Covid has sure been a tough row to hoe trying to avoid it.) We figure we likely will wear n95s when in public for the rest of our lives. And also some form of eyewear as the eyes are also mucous membranes. Even otc bifocals or otc no rx computer glasses help. Our paramedic kid has switched full time to safety goggles with cheaters and a mask. Four years and still no covid so I guess it helps, seeing the exposures taken.

And it is ridiculous that hear in bubba land folks assume when they see a mask that you are either protesting, rioting, going to commit a crime, or worst of all to them about to vote democrat.

    Max,

    FWIW…. 🙂

I’ve been wearing a mask year round since the start of the pandemic. 🙂 I find it’s WAY easier for me….I don’t have to try and figure out which bugs might or might not be going around. 🙂 And when you take into consideration all the forest (wild) fire smoke….

People might look at me strangely…I figure that’s their problem, not mine. 🙂 And I know of some people who wear masks all year round — and have done so for years — due to issues with their immune system.

One of the bible verses many young people learn is Proverbs 9:10, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” These celebrity “pastors” are simply charlatans. They have NO fear of the Lord that I can see. They don’t fear using His holy name in vain. They don’t fear pimping out His bride, the church. I fear for their eternal souls.
