(1/2) Don Logan Is Out As Pastor of Eternal Church. The Elders Are “Sorry” for Causing Hurt. The Church Needs Some New Elders.

Tears

“We can never know what might have been, but what is to come is another matter entirely.” –C. S. Lewis

I will write a second post on The Falls Church Anglican later today, but I wanted you to know our concern was heard.

This is short and sweet. Last evening, Logan was out as pastor of Eternal Church. When you read the post, you will notice that the church leaders discovered that they made a serious mistake in not listening to the people in the church. I guess that they knew they would lose members and not attract newer members. TWW gives a tip of the hat to the woman who approached us to look into the story.

For the Fort Mill Sun: Eternal Church Parts Way with Pastor, Asks Forgiveness From Those Hurt.

The communication, signed by the elders, expressed gratitude for Logan’s decade-long service, but emphasized the necessity of the decision based on biblical principles and the church’s mission. The nondenominational church has removed his photo from their website and taken down the church’s Facebook page, where his sermons had been available.

Central to the Elders’ rationale was the acknowledgment of past failures in addressing issues that could potentially tarnish the church’s reputation and its members’ trust.

The Elders failed to see how Don’s conviction would adversely affect him, his family, the victim, members, attenders, and most importantly the church’s witness within the community by not bringing the conviction into the light years ago,” the church letter confessed, pleading for forgiveness from those hurt by their inaction.

They acknowledge trust was broken. Yeah, right. Keeping secrets about a convicted sex offender as the lead pastor is a problem. What were they thinking?

You can read the elder’s letter at the above link. Thank you to the TWW community for supporting members concerned about this action on the part of elders.

I would suggest getting new elders to carry on the church’s mission.

They need to apologize publicly for their grievous mistreatment of the whistleblower. They should begin the church discipline process on Don Logan, NOT welcome him back to membership. He deceived many people and organizations. An investigation of the entire 30 year history of Logan should be undertaken.

I wish they had been more transparent in case there are current victims. There needs to be a trauma informed plan of action/care that provides a way for people to report concerns, if there are any.

My heart breaks for the congregation. This whole situation must be incredibly difficult on so many levels for all involved.

Absolutely. I have heard rumors that there may have been more that was coming out.

The step this church would have the elders of the church resign immediately. It was adumpster fire and excrement sandwich of their own making. They all need to take a bite.

I would never join an elder led church, where elders make all the decisions and await the occasional rubber stamp from the congregation. Such a system of governance often leads to those in leadership amassing power in their hands and to a lack of transparency in financial matters, for example.. An ambitious desire to be in the ‘in group ‘ , to be the decision makers, subsumes many so that they willingly toe the party line.
Anyone rocking the most by revealing sexual or spiritual abuse becomes the enemy who must be silenced.
Although congregational churches have their own problems, at least the priesthood of the believer, and the emphasis on soul competency place the responsibility firmly on each church member to stand for openness, for righteousness and against abuse, rather than leaving it to the “leadership”.

So let’s just say I was an elder in a church and I just found out about criminal activity like what we are discussing here. If for no other reason than to protect my own reputation I would blow the whistle. That would not be the proper motivation but these guys have the whole “reputation” thing backwards. Don’t they know that they will wind up on TWW?

This makes me think that in addition to being enablers, they are just stupid.

“Central to the Elders’ rationale was the acknowledgment of past failures in addressing issues that could potentially tarnish the church’s reputation and its members’ trust.”

That “rationale” has always been there. If the Elders missed this one literally staring them in the face, what else have they or will they overlook? The congregation really needs to seriously consider church leadership and make some changes before another accident happens. Attracting another pastor with this team of elders still in place will be difficult, given all the media and internet coverage.

George: This makes me think that in addition to being enablers, they are just stupid.

I don’t want to insult their intelligence, but it’s clear that their collective Biblical/spiritual IQ is not very high. There is just no defence for hiring/retaining a pastor who had disqualified himself from ministry, who is also on a sex offender registry!

Grainne: I would never join an elder led church, where elders make all the decisions and await the occasional rubber stamp from the congregation.

IMO, congregational governance is the proper Biblical model, not elder-rule polity. Elders/deacons are to be servants to the congregation, not overlords.

Grainne: An ambitious desire to be in the ‘in group’, to be the decision makers, subsumes many so that they willingly toe the party line.

The lure of the inner ring, with its prestige and power, has been the downfall of many. Being a yes-man church leader is an ugly thing to behold.

Grainne: the priesthood of the believer, and the emphasis on soul competency place the responsibility firmly on each church member

Priesthood of the believer and soul competency are Biblical truths that are hidden in every elder-ruled church; you’ll never hear them preach/teach on these doctrines. If “Pastor” and his yes-men elders can prevent the church from knowing who they really are in Christ, they can control the spiritual daylights out of members.

Preferably elders who don’t want to abolish the sex offender registry because it causes “hurt” to pedophiles.

Lorne James is unfit to hold any position of authority or responsibility within the church.

Dale Rudiger: An investigation of the entire 30 year history of Logan should be undertaken.

30 years may not be enough. The investigation probably needs to go back to his time in Bible College in Cincinnati. I assume that the elders at Eternal Church have now read the case file from 1997. Two of the testimonial letters written by children are quite disturbing.

  16. Notice: Undefined variable: button in /home/guswo2wr8yyv/public_html/tww2/wp-content/plugins/quote-comments/quote-comments.php on line 127

    Dale Rudiger,

I was one of the people who vehemently disagreed with what the elders intially did, how they handled themselves and the situation up until the firing. However, I do not believe God would want us to condemn this man or his family. Not sure why you as a Christian would not welcome anyone into your church. We are called to serve the least and the lost, we are called to love and we are called to let God discipline his children. It’s been handled, he has been let go. He has children who are innocent in all of this, we should be supporting them. Nobody will ever know if Don truly repented and changed his life after jail. That is between him and God, we are not called to ostracize him or his family. We are all aware now and can put protective measures in place to ensure safety, if he chooses to attend Eternal. If people choose to stay at Eternal, they are clearly aware. Personally, I will not be staying because I disagree with how the elders and some staff so strongly supported Don and minimized the victim. However, if I stayed I would definitely treat Don and his family as Christ has called us as Christians to do. The rest is for God to handle, we all will one day be held accountable for our sins. We should be praying for him, his family, the church, the staff, the church community and the victim.

    Dawn Harrington,

Dawn, we are called to love, but that love means we are to be wise as serpents to protect the innocent. If you read my posts, you will see that the reoffense rate for paraphilias is astronomical, and that is using stats from the NIH. A grown man with a sexual interest in a 14 y.o. means something is going on that goes beyond t sin and crime. I suspect it is a paraphilia. If Logan were open, he would have shared this info with us, And if he had not investigated this possibility, then there is a problem with truly wanting to deal with the problem.

A pastor friend of mine handled this well when a pedophile wished to attend his church. he sat him down and said he was welcome, but he would have to agree with certain rules. First, the church posted a few pictures of him around the church so people would know who he was. This meant he had to be transparent.

Secondly, when he was on campus, he had to have an escort with him at all times. The church had many men who happily volunteered to be in that role. He was not welcome where children gathered specifically but was allowed in the services and adult fellowships. That pedophile was treated in a safe manner.

The pedophile agreed. What humility. If you truly care for your church and are educated as to the problems associated with this diagnosis, you will see the wisdom of this approach.

Yes, I feel bad for Logan’s kids. However, one must place the blame for that on Logan’s shoulders. To serve Logan in the church is going to be quite difficult.

I also believe that some people who have children feel that their families were unnecessarily exposed to risk. There is justifiable anger. Once people feel that their safety takes priority, I’m sure they will be open to methods of inclusion.

    dee,
100% agree with putting precautions in place but allowing him and his family to attend. I am a social worker and well aware of the likelihood of reoffending. Hence, why we do supervised visits when this occurs within the family unit; along with treatment and counseling. If he goes to a different church, they may not be aware of the issue. There are struggles we all hide that may be “victimless” in nature, we all need help to fight those urges to sin, we all sin. You can also see a direct correlation in many studies that the perpetrators were more likely to have been victimized themselves as children. We should be willing to not just call out the sin/sinner but also walk beside them to help if they seek it.

Yes, I’ve experienced that too … where influential members rule the roost … they are usually long-time members who think they own the church because they gave so much money to it, prominent businessmen in the community, and assorted religious bigmouths … most don’t have a spiritual bone in their bodies … they can get downright ugly at business meetings, demanding their way for everything from color of the carpet to color of the preacher! Yeah, congregational governance can get out of control, too. Come Lord Jesus!

    dee,

    This.

And, thanks for taking the time to write this excellent response.

The science regarding paraphilias indicates that for social safety, discrete and unique rules need to be in place. Men and women who cross that line into this behavior are in a whole different universe.

Roy Hazelwood’s research says that they have a robust fantasy life to boot, that happened long before the behavior manifested. Does the fantasy ever go away? The question.

    Grace:

My heart breaks for the congregation. This whole situation must be incredibly difficult on so many levels for all involved.

We went to a church that went through a “revelation” and attempted (but failed) cover up by the elders.

Many years later that church is a shell of what it used to be. It destroyed a great community. To this day I am still affected by the whole series of events and I still mourn the loss of that community. We were all collateral damage.

The victim and her family were obviously affected many orders of magnitude more.

What a travesty these things are.

There is no situation like this where the pastors or elders who are involved in the actions and cover-up should be allowed in ministry ever again. Be a member? Maybe, depending on their contrition. But be in any form of leadership? H— no.

    Poppy,

The case is not online. I ordered the case file from the Clinton County Clerk of Court. 203 pages. I would ask the elders if they have each read the interviews of the two girls, the letters requesting no early release, and the letters on behalf of Don Logan requesting leniency prior to sentencing.

Agreed. If support/protection of a pastor and concealment of his sexual abuse of a child is not permanent disqualification from ministry for all concerned, what is?!

dee: we are called to love, but that love means we are to be wise as serpents to protect the innocent

We are also called to forgive, but forgiveness doesn’t mean that we are to be so open-minded about sin in the camp that our spiritual brains fall out. Church bad boys have been know to take advantage of forgiving hearts to transgress again. We read about them all the time on TWW.

  36. Notice: Undefined variable: button in /home/guswo2wr8yyv/public_html/tww2/wp-content/plugins/quote-comments/quote-comments.php on line 127

Dawn Harrington: Not sure why you as a Christian would not welcome anyone into your church.

This should only be done with many safeguards in place. This isvto make sure there would never be another victim. No one here advocates shunning a repentant person. But we do advocate protecting all members from possible abuse.

  37. Notice: Undefined variable: button in /home/guswo2wr8yyv/public_html/tww2/wp-content/plugins/quote-comments/quote-comments.php on line 127

Bridget: No one here advocates shunning a repentant person.

Two things always happen with TWW posts like this. (1) There are always church members who defend their pastor, and (2) Christians who post concerns about such church leaders always catch hell from the same members.

As Christians, we all understand repentance and forgiveness. But as Christians, we should all understand when lines are crossed that demand we protect the little ones by exercising tough love by not restoring a pastor who abused a child. Forgive them if they repent? Certainly. Restore them to ministry. Absolutely not! Their transgression disqualified them from that sacred office permanently. There are other places they can serve in the Body of Christ, without shunning but with close supervision.

    Dale Rudiger,

Dale, you said there were letters from two girls. Were there two victims/instances of SA?

Do you anticipate the court documents being posted online or are there legal issues preventing this?

This is so sad and shocking!

  39. Notice: Undefined variable: button in /home/guswo2wr8yyv/public_html/tww2/wp-content/plugins/quote-comments/quote-comments.php on line 127

To clarify, there were two girls from Kirklin who were interviewed, one of whom was the SA victim and one who was groomed and in process. The latter he kissed on the lips on multiple occasions and on one occasion told her that he wanted to walk in the woods and rape her.

The two letters that I spoke of were testimonial letters on behalf of Logan from two sisters, 12 and 13. Their mother let them go with him on a trip to Cincinnati. Both said that he did nothing to them, but one said that he hardly spent any time at all with them. There was a third girl, a friend of the sisters, who also was on the trip.

Logan was careful to confirm that his victim was 14 (the law is much harsher for 13 and under). My thought was, “what was he doing in Cincinnati?” The crime that he was convicted for occurred at Kirklin where he was the victim’s former youth pastor, not in Geneva where he was then an associate pastor. I was concerned about possible victim(s) in Cincinnati where he graduated from Bible College. Also I was concerned about the friend mentioned in the 12 yo’s letter.
