A Prayer by Henri Nouwen

Dear God,

I so much want to be in control.
I want to be the master of my own destiny.
Still I know that you are saying:
“Let me take you by the hand and lead you.
Accept my love
and trust that where I will bring you,
the deepest desires of your heart will be fulfilled.”
Lord, open my hands to receive your gift of love.

Amen.

Holy Spirit Comforting Fire – Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179AD)

Holy Spirit,
Comforting fire,
Life of all creation.
Anointing the sick, cleansing body and soul,
Fill this body!

Holy Spirit,
Sacred breath, Fire of love,
Sweetest taste, Beautiful aroma,
Fill this heart!

Holy Spirit,
Filling the world,
from the heights to the deep,
Raining from clouds, filling rivers and sea,
Fill this mind!

Holy Spirit,
Forgiving and giving,
uniting strangers, reconciling enemies,
Seeking the lost, and enfolding us together,
Fill these gathered here!

Holy Spirit,
Bringing light into dark places, igniting praise,
Greatest gift, our Hope and Encourager,
Holy Spirit of Christ,
I praise you!
Amen.

Beethoven’s Prayer link

(This prayer is said to have been prayed by Ludwig Van Beethoven 1770-1827AD
when he was turning deaf and realized that he would not regain his hearing.)

Lord God, give me victory over myself, that nothing may imprison my life.
Be the guiding light of my heart, lift me up from the dark depths.

May my soul be caught up in your wisdom, Fight its way upwards in fiery flight.
For you alone understand me, and only you can give me the power to keep going.
Amen

Benediction of St Patrick link

May the strength of God pilot us;
May the wisdom of God instruct us,
May the hand of God protect us,
May the word of God direct us.
Be always ours this day and for evermore.
Amen

  1. Apropos of nothing in particular… It so happens that Lesley and I are spending a week on the Isle of Skye (pictured at the top of the post) at the end of the month.

  2. dee,

We’d love to see you too!

Although… it is the midge season. So we’re hoping for sunshine and a breeze. Though we may get passionate rain (as in the Glasgow: “It’s pure passionate doon oot there by the way“.

    Midges: like Dementors, but real.

  3. Thank you for this, Dee. I loved her passion, talent and the beautiful way she worked it all together. Glory be to God!

  4. I can’t watch video right now (internet access is iffy), but I will!

Thanks for all of this, Dee – Hildegarde of Bingen’s prayer in particular. She was a very gifted woman and I’ll admit to being a bit of a fangirl.
