My Mom Is Seriously Ill

Last night, my mother got out of bed on her own (a no no)and slipped, fell, and broke her wrist and maybe in her pelvis. She told me she knew she shouldn’t have done it. She is now having heart problems and has become confused. She was rushed to a nonDuke hospital which means we don’t know her docs well. Please pray for her and us.

My Mom Is Seriously Ill — 32 Comments

  1. Dee, your Mom (and you) have been on my prayer agenda since you first mentioned, a while ago (pandemic time seems different than ordinary time; I can’t tell if it was just weeks or months) that she was having trouble.

An elderly friend recently passed away; I’d been helping him since Summer when he first fell and had head trauma. He wouldn’t follow the prescribed precautions and kept falling and potentially re-injuring. It was as if he had difficulty accepting, or even noticing, his limitations, difficulty in remembering the reality his fall risk. It was a trial for him, but also for his care-givers and compassion was mixed with frustration and dismay.

May God strengthen you as you persevere in concern, kindness, and care toward your beloved mother.

(A side note to all of us: let us remember these things when we are old — perhaps get into the habit now while we are still able to form new habits and memories — and let us be highly conscious of our limits so that when we are are facing our own physical limits we do not unintentionally self-injure out of over-confidence in, or simple ignorance of, our physical capacities. This will be mercy to us and to our care-givers)

I pray that it may please YHWH to preserve your Mom’s life, to heal her injuries and to help her to wisely and tranquilly adapt to the encroaching limitations of her mortal frame.

I second the motion; this is something we’re struggling now with elderly family members. Unintentional self-harm is bad enough. But with something like driving or keeping (legal) firearms in the house when cognitive abilities decline, there is also a real risk to others, as well. A sense of independence is a worthy source of pride, but also an Achille’s heel.

  3. Dee, so sorry to hear this. Sounds a lot like my mother’s story. Got out of a chair and fell. Said she knew she wasn’t supposed to do it. Xray’s didn’t show she broke her hip but she was in extreme pain whenever she moved. Jesus took her home December 12 and relieved her suffering. She was 98 years old and lived a full life for the Lord. May God grant you His mercy and grace in your journey with your mother.

  4. Unfortunately, as cognitive skills slip, so does judgment. My own father-in-law fractured his femur (3rd time!) after getting up w/o help (when he’d been told multiple times not to), and he was in a full nursing care environment.

Hoping that your Mom gets good care where she is.

  5. Hello Dee,

I know what you are going through is hard. My mom had emergency surgery (she was on blood thinners at the time) and was sent to a rehab facility after hospitalization. She FELL at the rehab. and when they brought her back to the hospital, she showed signs of a stroke. It took her some time to learn to get up and walk again, but she DID.
She was never the ‘same’ but did recover and did live for several more years until her heart gave out.

There are times when our parents’ problems can seem over-whelming. Best to take it all a day at a time. You most definitely have my prayers for you and your mom at this time of crisis.

  6. Oh Dee. I’m so sorry to hear this. I’ve been on a similar-type journey with my Mother, starting my 7th year as her guardian/caregiver. My heart and prayers are with your Mom and you. God is with you both <3

  7. Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

  8. Oh I missed this Dee, I hope she is doing a bit better & I will pray that she heals soon, & that you are strengthened.
