A Prayer for All Needs by Clement of Rome

We beg you, Lord, to help and defend us.
Deliver the oppressed.
Pity the insignificant.
Raise the fallen.
Show yourself to the needy.
Heal the sick.
Bring back those of your people who have gone astray.
Feed the hungry.
Lift up the weak.
Take off the prisoners’ chains.
May every nation come to know that you alone are God,
that Jesus is your Child, that we are your people,
the sheep that you pasture.
Amen.

Prayer of Origen:

Jesus, my feet are dirty.
Come even as a slave to me, pour water into your bowl, come and wash my feet.
In asking such a thing I know I am overbold,
but I dread what was threatened when you said to me,
“If I do not wash your feet I have no fellowship with you.”
Wash my feet then, because I long for your companionship.
Amen

Prayer of St. Clement of Rome, (c. 35-101)

We beseech You, Master, to be our helper and protector.
Save the afflicted among us; have mercy on the lowly;
Raise up the fallen; appear to the needy; heal the ungodly;
Restore the wanderers of Your people;
Feed the hungry; ransom our prisoners;
Raise up the sick; comfort the faint-hearted.
Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever.
Amen.

Benediction

The Lord give us peace in our going out and our coming in,
in our lying down and in our rising up, in our labor and in our leisure,
in our laughter and in our tears;
until we come to stand before him on that day to which there is no sunset and no dawn,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

  1. My God knows the trouble I see, and doesn’t listen to the people that featured in the last thread.

  2. Note what Origen prays for in the two early church prayers here – not to be a scourge, but to be like his Lord, scourged. This prayer emerges, it seems, from Isaiah 58.
