Update on Florida SBC Pastor and SBC Elder Arrested For Child Porn: A Reminder for the SBC Annual Meeting.

On  December 16, 2020, TWW published an article on William Milam, the Pastor of Olivet Southern Baptist Church. (Pictured on the left.) On December 14, 2020, Milam was jailed and charged with two counts of promoting the sexual performance of a child and 25 counts of possession of child pornography. Additionally, on March 29, 2021, TWW published another article on 2 Florida men, the first being the previously mentioned SBC pastor William Milam; the second, John Griffin a non-staff (lay) elder from  Riverbend Community Church, also an SBC church. (Pictured on right.)

William Milam’s counsel has filed several Motions to Continue, one of the reasons given for the last Motion was that Milam had to appear in another Court on a different case. I was unable to find what that case was about. It now appears that Milam’s trial will start with jury selection on either October 4th or 18th of 2021.

John Griffin’s case does not yet appear to have set a trial date. He had a “Pre-trial-Custody” hearing scheduled for April 21, but Griffin’s defense counsel filed a “Continued” motion to delay the “Pre-Trial-Custody” hearing until June 28.

Not being an attorney, I am not sure what a Pre-trial-Custody hearing is about. Venturing a guess, it may be an attempt to get Griffin released from jail until the trial is over.

In the meantime, John Griffin was charged with 13 new felony counts. These counts are a result of Griffin forwarding electronic files containing child pornography to others.

Additionally, it was revealed Griffin was engaged in email exchanges with a 15-year-old girl and had also applied to become a foster parent!

“Following a tip from Snapchat in August 2020 to the National Center for Missing or Exploited Children, authorities began investigating Griffin. They initially found more than 200 images on his iPad after his first arrest but further review of Griffin’s social media and chat accounts unearthed he was also sending the files to other users, according to the arrest report.

Griffin shared graphic images with other Kik chat users of children estimated to be as young as 5 years old, detectives said.”

“After John Robert Griffin II, 73, was charged with 30 second-degree felony counts of possession of photos of sexual performance by a child, police said they alerted the Florida Department of Children and Families. Griffin had recently asked the agency to reinstate him and his wife as foster parents for children and infants, his arrest report states.”

Update on Florida SBC Pastor and SBC Elder Arrested For Child Porn: A Reminder for the SBC Annual Meeting. — 37 Comments

  1. SBC? — Super Broken Character?

No, I know many involved in the SBC are not like this and are embarrassed. But if they can’t see that it’s time for a serious shake up… I don’t know what to think.

  2. Florida SBC Pastor and SBC Elder Arrested For Child Porn:

I’m at the point of “So What Else Is New? Take a Number and Stand in Line.”

Does anyone else remember a Frank Zappa “song” called “Brown Shoes Don’t Make It”? Had a similar subject matter of closet pedo kink among those in Authority, starting about two minutes in.

  3. You know most people aren’t that way, yet you run into so many of them in churches (and schools-I’m a teacher of many years) that it’s very scary. You can run background checks galore, and not catch someone because they have never been caught. That, to me, is the worst part. I have been pleased that my church has taken the matter more seriously with an upgraded check-in system, large windows in all the rooms, and roaming security (just nice, friendly folks who walk the halls during services and steer people who might wander where they don’t need to be back to the sanctuary/lobby). I’m not in an SB church, but many churches don’t take child sex abuse seriously. I think our leadership got the clue when some of the men tried to help a man who had a child porn “issue”. The first time he lost a job, there was a lot of sympathy because he was “repentant.” The second time, they were done and started to talk more seriously about how we dealt with security in the children’ ministry.

  4. They are concerned when it goes public and may interfere with revenue. There is nothing more important than that, Nothing.

  5. brian: They are concerned when it goes public and may interfere with revenue. There is nothing more important than that, Nothi

The SBC- all male leaders do not care and will put an end to all this attention as fast as they can.

  6. Timely post. The felonious perverted (allegedly) pastor’s & felonious perverted (allegedly) layman’s Court dates are coming up just as the Mothership is docked at harbor in the carnival mode while ignoring such things. Time for people of integrity to abandon this criminal (allegedly) ship.

How to right the Mothership? Begin with a database (build on the work of @RobDownenChron), logging all cases that are a matter of public record anyway. That’s transparency & integrity & “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. Begin.

  7. Linn: You know most people aren’t that way, yet you run into so many of them in churches (and schools-I’m a teacher of many years) that it’s very scary.

Which indicates that something about churches concentrates those who “are that way”.
Part of it is that Christians are easy marks in general. Speak the right buzzwords and fake the right attitude and you’re not only accepted but they open up completely for you. And successful predators are masters of reading their victims’ culture and blending right in to “appear as Angels of Light”.

  8. Mara R: I don’t know what to think.

    I know what to think…….
After being and attendee of SBC affiliated churches for almost 57 years, and a member of SBC affiliated churches for over 43 years ……….
    I think I’m done!

  9. brian: revenue. There is nothing more important than that, Nothing.

Except maybe : ego, fame, control, power, public image, the appearance of being holy and pure and righteous ……….
Ronnie Floyd has been going on and on ….. and on ….. about how great and wonderful the SBC is —— Projection much?

  10. Headless Unicorn Guy,

    HUG,
They tend to appear anywhere there are children with vulnerable, trusting parents. I’ve had parents get surprised when I tell them I only tutor at school right after classes or in their home with a parent present. It’s best practices.

  11. Nancy2(aka Kevlar): Ronnie Floyd has been going on and on ….. and on ….. about how great and wonderful the SBC is

Of course it’s wonderful … he’s pocketing a great and wonderful salary from Southern Baptists.

  12. Linn: there was a lot of sympathy because he was “repentant”

A lot of church folks get fooled by this … they are just too trusting. It’s sort of like prisoners finding Jesus so they can get released early … then living like hell when they get out.

  13. Max: It’s obviously too darn easy for a pervert to become an SBC pastor/elder.

Their exposure and the exposure of the damage they do is not going away. The truth will continue to show up at their carnival conventions, unofficially, of course: outside on the sidewalk, distribution of statements, MSM coverage, twitter, blogs. Witnesses, evidence. Truth: who are the predators, what they do, who are the enablers supporting criminal activity in churches.

  14. My church got their “wake up call” a couple decades ago. A man came to the children’s area to pick up his little girl. Fortunately, the workers remembered this was NOT the same person who dropped the kid off, and refused to hand her over. The guy got scared and took off. Turns out he REALLY WAS the biological dad, but…the biological mom had put the child up for adoption, and the adoptive couple went to our church. [I’m not sure if he had even been previously aware that the bio mom was pregnant] Anyway, the guy managed to track down the adoptive family, and found out what church they went to. If the workers had not been so sharp eyed and determined…I don’t even want to think about it!

  15. Jean: [I’m not sure if he had even been previously aware that the bio mom was pregnant]

My guess is that he did know. It is highly illegal for a biological mother to place a child for adoption without notifying the biological father. Laws vary, but this is a huge deal in the jurisdictions I am familiar with. An adoption attorney would make sure that the prospective adoptive parents complied with every detail of the law.

The biological father might sign away his rights, or the courts might terminate his rights. He might well have a right to receive information about the adoption, and to contest it. This situation can be dangerous if the man is violent. Under those circumstances, the courts might intervene while making decisions about the child’s future.

(I’m not a lawyer, and the above might not apply if the birth mother abandoned the baby, or if the baby ended up in foster care. But you mentioned the mother placing the baby for adoption.)

  16. Max:
It’s obviously too darn easy for a pervert to become an SBC pastor/elder.

And once they do, all the other perv pastors/elders cover fot them.

Church organization leaders that cover up criminals in the organization are conspirators in crime. They drive the getaway car for the criminals.

  18. Ted: Christa Brown

“Christa Brown, a longtime advocate for abuse survivors in Baptist circles, said she did not have faith in the SBC’s ability to address the issue.

“’The juxtaposition of nice-sounding talk with a lack of any care or action feels duplicitous and lessens any possibility of trust,’ Brown said. ‘It is yet another way of being re-victimized and exploited.’”

  19. And…just in… Ed Litton has been elected SBC president. According to The Guardian, Litton “has called for more distance from politics, and has the support of prominent Black Southern Baptists.” Religion News calls him a “relative unknown despite serving in several prominent SBC posts since the early 2000s.”

  20. Ted: And…just in… Ed Litton has been elected SBC president. And Litton is a “moderate” conservative. LOL

  21. Ted,

Great article. This quote is something else:

In a statement, Ronnie Floyd, the committee’s current president, said: “The Convention was – and still is – divided over methods of response to sexual abuse. However, the SBC is not divided on the priority of caring for abuse survivors and protecting the vulnerable in our churches.”

Guess what, Ronnie? Doing nothing is not caring and protecting.

  22. Friend:
    Ted,

Guess what, Ronnie? Doing nothing is not caring and protecting.

But saying so lets them Polish their Haloes.

    The word is “Sanctimonious”.

  23. Ava Aaronson: Church organization leaders that cover up criminals in the organization are conspirators in crime. They drive the getaway car for the criminals.

Your example is actually “Accessory” or “Accompilce”.

  24. Jean: Turns out he REALLY WAS the biological dad, but…the biological mom had put the child up for adoption, and the adoptive couple went to our church. This is really scary and I could see it happening in some of these big churches. I used to sometimes help in the nursery at a large church and the kids change every week. You get to know some regulars, but there’s a lot of new people all the time. When I was a teacher, we knew most of the parents after the first few weeks, but it’s not necessarily the case in a church.

  25. Churches have always been targeted by pedophiles. Insurance companies will tell you that in their statistics, which is why proper policies and procedures are needed on these things instead of a wing and a prayer. What is maddening is Christian leadership who ridicule and malign victims, shelter perpetrators and do not take seriously the protection of the vulnerable. Keep up the good work bringing the truth to light. It is God’s work you do.

  26. Sherry: What is maddening is Christian leadership who ridicule and malign victims, shelter perpetrators and do not take seriously the protection of the vulnerable. Keep up the good work bringing the truth to light. It is God’s work you do.

Why do they do this? All heck breaks lose if you call a Woman as a Pastor or ordain a Woman, but when it comes to sexual abuse it is a whole different story.

  27. Tom Parker: All heck breaks lose if you call a Woman as a Pastor or ordain a Woman, but when it comes to sexual abuse it is a whole different story.

Predatory CSA in church (see @RobDownenChron’s database) is literally when he!! comes to church, violates church participants, & then silences victims. Book of Jude in the Bible.

  28. Sherry: Churches have always been targeted by pedophiles. Insurance companies will tell you that in their statistics, which is why proper policies and procedures are needed on these things instead of a wing and a prayer.

Attorneys also have their stats. Greatest area of legal proceedings (lawsuits) in churches is in the area of sexual abuse.
