EChurch@Wartburg: 11/07/2020: Wade Burleson: Psalm 121 – When I Feel Hopeless and Shattered

An instrument of Your Peace – St. Francis of Assisi link

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.
Amen

Prayer of St Augustine link

O Lord, my God,
grant us your peace;
already, indeed, you have made us rich in all things!
Give us that peace of being at rest,
that sabbath peace,
the peace which knows no end.
Amen

Lead Me – Thomas Merton link

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please You does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that, if I do this, You will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust You always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for You are ever with me, and You will never leave me to face my perils alone.
Amen

Psalm 121 NIV

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Benediction: Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant
brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,
equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to him,
through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
Amen.

  1. I very much appreciate the inclusion of early voices of our faith – here St Augustine. We forget among the contemporaniety of modern worship that this is an ancient faith, with voices raised in praise, song, and prayer for two millennia.

  2. I, too, appreciate it when the works and prayers of St. Augustine are included. I have been studying more about his life. A family member was recently named after him, and I wanted to learn more. You are helping me. Thank you.
