Jeff S: Online Concert to Benefit a Domestic Abuse Survivor — 27 Comments

  1. Thanks for promoting this, Dee. I’ve seen what Jeff S., Jeff Crippen, Barbara Roberts, etc, have done at A Cry for Justice: http://cryingoutforjustice.wordpress.com/

I’ve been saddened by many stories I’ve read of church leaders encouraging women to remain with their abusive spouses and simply pray that their husband’s hearts will change.

  2. Thanks Dee! We are thrilled you are giving this exposure, and as a Calvinist I’m sure the timing was in the Lord’s will (I kid! Don’t throw things, please!)

For a little background, Megan C (who is really handling the fundraiser part of this- I’m just doing the music part) and I have met so many women in “Anew”‘s position through blogging, and we’ve been so burdened to try and help in a more tangible way. Already there has been a wonderful response- way more than we expected- and honestly I’m just grateful to be a part of the true church that knows what it means to reach out and do real “justice”.

And if watching me play the guitar and sing isn’t your thing, there is a direct donation options available on the FB group page.

And here’s Anew’s response to all of this:

I know there is so many needs and so many causes- but this is one we’ve felt burdened for and we appreciate any help people can give.

  3. @ Jeff S:Can you explain how this works. I purchased a ticket for 200 notes which is $20. It now says I still have 180 notes but I wanted the entire amount to go to you. Why do i still have 180 notes? Sometimes I feel so stupid when I do these things.

  4. @ dee:
Yeah- their whole system of “notes” is just confusing. It shows you having paid 20 notes- I don’t know if that was a glitch or what. All you need to do is just “tip” the rest, which you can do at any time. I’ll credit you with a $20 ticket so you can get your free CD 🙂

Thanks so much for supporting this, Dee!

And for what it’s worth, if anyone is interested, Jars Of Clay is doing a concert the night before, but obviously that has nothing to do with our fundraiser 🙂

Me too. That is the typical advice.

Out of material by professional counselors (both Christian and Non Christian) I’ve read that mention domestic abuse, churches, Christian lay persons, and preachers almost always tell an abused woman to stay with the spouse and submit to him – and these counselors say that is bad / wrong advice.

That sort of advice (according to one or two sources I read) seems to predominate in churches or denominations that teach and support “gender complementarianism.”

Not that all male gender complementarians abuse, but for men who are already given to abuse (these counselors explain), they find cover, justification, and excuses for the abuse of their wives in gender comp teachings. They don’t admit to being wrong or seek help.

  6. @ Daisy:
My therapist used to work with domestic abusers. He said the very worst ones were those who used scripture to justify their behavior. He says it was hardly even worth talking to them.

I have heard so many stories of this nature, I am no longer shocked, in fact, I am shocked when I hear churches getting it right.

When my church handled things the way they did, I thought they were out of line and it was an exception to the rule. What I have learned since was not only is attitude standard in evangelical churches, but that they were pretty lenient with me compared to what others have endured, and that as a man I think I definitely had it easier. I was not forced to go to Nouthetic counsling, I was not excommunicated (just fired and made to feel very uncomfortable), and at the end of the day, I had a job and financial resources. I thought I had it bad until I started reading the stories in ACFJ.

  7. This is just great, Jeff S. Cheers to you, your honest art, and your very kind heart.

(didn’t mean to rhyme — sounds odd, but the words are right.

Because they had Cosmic-level justification for their abuse, AKA God was on THEIR side.

Me too! The irony is chilling. Toxic church.

  10. @ Anon 1:
Thanks for the complements, all. I’ve been looking for a way to use my music to make a difference, and this seemed like a way. I’m really glad for the opportunity to step out of the blogging world and step into the real world, for at least a moment!

I hope someone…has sent an invitation to John Piper. If not will someone smack him with an email!

    Hey, Eagle,
We should coordinate this email smacking with a bunch of us, you know, make it happen all in one night so Piper can see what it feels like to be smacked around one night then have to wait and call for the elders in the morning.

(kind of like taking two aspirin and calling the doctor in the morning, because men in power see a woman being smacked by her husband as such a small thing like a little headache that the little woman exaggerates into brain cancer. being smacked is no big deal. why are all these womenfolk making such a deal out of such a little thing…sorry for the hijack…thought Eagle’s modest proposal was pretty good and more than a little humorous.)

  12. I suppose every one already knows that CJ and CLC, GOB, told women to stay with abuse. And as well, it’s really her fault. Also, you can never say no to sex. This makes women into something like a slave. Throw in having children, home schooling, not working. This is a recipe for disaster. If the husband is abusive.

As Piper ignorantly said, the husband is “simply hurting her.”

  14. Just a quick note. This post (not the comment) makes for 1000 posts live on TWW.

Also we are at 74,700+ comments at this time.

  15. This is starting in just over 2 hours. Already the money raised has been quite a lift for “Anew” and I have it on good authority from those who knew her personally that this whole thing has just brought real encouragement into her life. So the concert will be somewhat of a celebration and fellowship- looking foward to hearing from those who get a chance to make it 🙂

Tickets are still avialable (duh- because while the site makes me pick a number, I can always increase it- it’s virtual!)

And thanks again D&D for supporting this.
