A Christian Bumpkin met a Lumpkin on the road to Oz
Said the Bumpkin to the Lumpkin,  "Would you kindly pause?
Could you please explicate the meaning of exonerate?
So that the pounding in my pate, you may help alleviate?"
Said the Lumpkin to the Bumpkin, "Sir, I have no time.
A Caner said some silly things and some say it’s a crime.
For Caner I must formulate excuses they will tolerate.
Allowing us to obfuscate and forever more to exculpate."
And so the Bumpkin left the Lumpkin to find a better way
The Bible always speaks the truth, beating nonsense any day

I was in New York City on the day the Southern Baptist Convention convened in Orlando, so I wasn't able to watch the live feed like so many others.  My husband and I took our daughter to the Big Apple so she could participate in the New York Tribeca summer project sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ.  She is spending five weeks on college campuses sharing her faith with those who do not know Jesus Christ and encouraging those who do.  We are overjoyed that our rising college senior is so passionate about her faith when so many in her age group are closing the door to Christianity.  To God be the glory!

How many times during my decade of membership in the SBC did I hear my pastors encourage the congregation's giving along these lines:  "Remember that when you place your contribution in the offering plate, you are supporting the Cooperative Program…"  It was always stated in such an affirming way that my husband and I were happy to be combining our financial gifts with fellow Southern Baptists in order to fulfill the Great Commission.

I am mad, really mad! There used to be sacrifice involved when serving in Christian organizations. Sometimes, far too much sacrifice. However, that is changing – BIG TIME!

Until last year, Dee and I were members of different Southern Baptist churches. Each of us spent almost a decade fully supporting the SBC.  We were just “going with the flow” like so many of our brothers and sisters in Christ.  During that time we were completely oblivious to the issues we discuss here at The Wartburg Watch.  Then Almighty God got our attention…

Digression alert: Soon after meeting with Doug Pittman, I had the opportunity to speak at length with Tom Rich. Once again, I was grateful for the "heart-rending" experience at my former church. Once again, as he told me his story, I felt like I was reading a playbook as I heard about the responses by Mac Brunson and the so-called "leadership" at FBC Jacksonville.

God’s sovereignty never ceases to amaze us!  Last Monday I was enjoying my visit to the Big Apple, while Dee posted her timely article “A LIAR FOR A SEMINARY PRESIDENT”.   Unbeknownst to either of us, Focus on the Family aired a broadcast THAT VERY DAY featuring Ergun Caner called From Jihad to Jesus.  God’s timing is incredible!

A couple of weeks ago we did a post on the story of James, the half brother of Jesus. We discussed James' remarkable change of heart. When Jesus began His ministry, James thought his brother was delusional. Yet, James became the leader of the church at Jerusalem and was martyred in the service of his Brother. What changed his mind was most likely the appearance of Jesus specifically to him after His Resurrection. Please read the full story here.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of listening, in church, to a panel made up of four scientists who happen to be Christians. They discussed their professions, how their faith impacts their science, and vice versa. All four proclaimed their sense of awe for God’s incredible creation and the complexity of the world He has made. Yet, all four of these Christians would be in serious trouble at my former church and in many others. All of them believed in an old earth and some form theistic evolution. Yet, as I listened to them, I could sense their passion for the Lord as well as their dedication to the Scriptures.

Are Christian conferences just an American phenomenon?  Across the pond in jolly old England, Christian leaders can attend a conference that involves “teaching” and “worship”.  This annual event held in Brighton is designed primarily for Christian leaders, but welcomes students and twenty-somethings.  Incredibly, 5,000 delegates from 50 nations attend this annual conference.

My counterpart recently wrote a fascinating article on the contributions that Sovereign Grace Ministries, along with its fearless apostle, Mahaney, have made to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. This seminary is the flagship seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is also home to one of C.J.’s best buddies, the very reformed president, Al Mohler. A number of past and present SGMers have commented that they couldn’t understand these donations. Their primary reasons for concern are:

The first time I ever heard the phrase “The Scream of the Damned” was on March 19, 2009, right around the time that Dee and I began our blog The Wartburg Watch.  It absolutely INFURIATED me!  How dare someone suggest that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ “screamed” on the cross and that He was ‘damned’, which means “condemned, especially to eternal punishment”.  I believe “damned” is a sensational word that implies someone is being sent to hell.  After reading C.J. Mahaney’s book Living the Cross Centered Life, I discovered that this ridiculous phrase originated with R.C. Sproul (see yesterday’s post).

Deb’s Testimony

I began conducting internet research on Reformed Theology in the fall of 2008.  I firmly believe I was driven by the Holy Spirit to discover everything I could about this movement which is rocking the very foundations of our churches and seminaries.  It became a daily discipline for me, and I would often spend 7 to 8 hours a day conducting research on my computer when it would seem like only a few hours had passed.  I’ll admit it – I was obsessed!

When I was growing up, my mother often warned me that I would be judged by the company I keep.  When companies invite speakers to their annual meeting, Wall Street watches very carefully because these speakers can often indicate the direction the company is going to pursue. Rest assured that a company would never feature a speaker with whom they disagreed.

It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations.
