BREAKING NEWS:  Ergun Caner's successor has been named.  Here's the announcement hot off the press…

"Liberty University co-founder Elmer Towns has been named dean of the school’s Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, officials announced at opening convocation Wednesday."

Towns, 77, replaces Ergun Caner, whose contract as seminary dean was not renewed for this year following an LU investigation into claims Caner made about his upbringing and background as a Muslim.

The committee concluded the Caner “has made factual statements that are self-contradictory.”

Is anyone surprised?

A Christian Bumpkin met a Lumpkin on the road to Oz
Said the Bumpkin to the Lumpkin,  "Would you kindly pause?
Could you please explicate the meaning of exonerate?
So that the pounding in my pate, you may help alleviate?"
Said the Lumpkin to the Bumpkin, "Sir, I have no time.
A Caner said some silly things and some say it’s a crime.
For Caner I must formulate excuses they will tolerate.
Allowing us to obfuscate and forever more to exculpate."
And so the Bumpkin left the Lumpkin to find a better way
The Bible always speaks the truth, beating nonsense any day

A political programme can never in reality be more than probably right. We never know all the facts about the present and we can only guess the future. To attach to a party programme – whose highest real claim is to reasonable prudence – the sort of assent which we should reserve for demonstrable theorems, is a kind of intoxication.     C S Lewis

"It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satisfied; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Digression alert: Soon after meeting with Doug Pittman, I had the opportunity to speak at length with Tom Rich. Once again, I was grateful for the "heart-rending" experience at my former church. Once again, as he told me his story, I felt like I was reading a playbook as I heard about the responses by Mac Brunson and the so-called "leadership" at FBC Jacksonville.

Note: May 20 pm: We realize our intent for this post was misunderstood by a few readers and decided to clarify our position.  We changed our title and the opening question to define our thoughts more closely.  We believe that Liberty University invited Beck for a variety of reasons, and we are exploring some possibilities.  As one pastor put it – "Even on my best days my motives are mixed."  However, today, we will present our strongest  theory for why Glenn Beck addressed Liberty grads.

A couple of days ago The Wartburg Watch received a very harsh comment which condemned the evangelical church. My first reaction was one of defensiveness. How dare he?! Look at how much the church has done for the world. I was about to make a clever comment incorporating various proofs such as the work of William Wilberforce.

arial”> Let’s start with the bottom line. We have ALL sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.  This Biblical truth should help us understand why we will never be able to overcome sin in our lives. It is for this reason that Jesus sacrificed Himself on that blessed Cross, dying in our place, and was resurrected.  Hopefully, as we grow in Christ, we sin less and less during the sanctification process; however, we will never be able to live a sinless life as mortal beings. Others would say that we become more and more aware of the depths of our sin nature the longer we are Christians. And we struggle until the day we meet Jesus. Read the rest of this entry »

Who knew there would come a day when some internet sleuths called “bloggers” (a relatively obscure bunch) would cause such a ruckus within Christendom? Yesterday, Christianity Today posted an article entitled “Bloggers Target Seminary President”on the Web.

God’s sovereignty never ceases to amaze us!  Last Monday I was enjoying my visit to the Big Apple, while Dee posted her timely article “A LIAR FOR A SEMINARY PRESIDENT”.   Unbeknownst to either of us, Focus on the Family aired a broadcast THAT VERY DAY featuring Ergun Caner called From Jihad to Jesus.  God’s timing is incredible!

A couple of weeks ago we did a post on the story of James, the half brother of Jesus. We discussed James' remarkable change of heart. When Jesus began His ministry, James thought his brother was delusional. Yet, James became the leader of the church at Jerusalem and was martyred in the service of his Brother. What changed his mind was most likely the appearance of Jesus specifically to him after His Resurrection. Please read the full story here.

Dr. Ergun Caner is, and should not be, the president of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a charismatic speaker who seems to have a knack for drawing people into his delusions. However, it appears this so-called leader of future preachers is living in a house of cards. His star began to rise in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. His claims of being a former child jihadist and his engaging speaking style have made him the darling of the evangelical set.
