They kicked it off in 2007 with a conference attended by 500. In 2008, the conference was a by-invitation-only, off-the-record meeting of the nearly 50 men on the coalition's council. In 2009, 3,100 pre-registered and 223 walked in. They also rolled out the Gospel Coalition Network (TGCN) on The City, a social networking site developed at Mars Hill Church in Seattle. The site will allow TGCN to approve and Continue reading →

There are several competing stories within this thread and I will do my best to integrate them. Press Release From Pastor Chuck O’Neal At 11AM EST, The Wartburg Watch received a press release from Pastor Chuck O’Neal. I asked permission to reprint it in part since it is quite lengthy. However, he asked that it be printed in full. So, we have created a separate page at TWW and will provide the link to it at the end of the following excerpt. To preface the release he wrote, “Things are not always what they first seem to be. Here is a small portion of the rest of the story.” "There is another side to the story. Beaverton Grace Bible Church wants to present its side of the story before anyone rushes to judgment. In Nov. of 2008 a man was removed from the staff of Beaverton Grace Bible Church (BGBC). Since that time, Pastor Charles O’Neal and the Beaverton Grace Bible Church have been the targets of a three and Continue reading →

I had to smile, since I remember sitting around a table with John Piper and Wayne Grudem and others, wracking our brains to come up with an apt label to describe the historic Christian teaching on gender. Oh how quickly labels turn into stereotypes!" Mary A. Kassian Rosie the Riveter I love learning the history of recently established complementarianism. It was birthed through the Danvers Statement, which Mary Kassian probably had a hand in writing. What I'd really like to know is how she became so privileged as a woman to sit shoulder to shoulder with the likes of John Piper and Wayne Grudem as they "wracked" their brains to identify a term that would describe their narrow interpretation of gender, supposedly according to Scripture. The above quote is the introduction to Mary Kassian's post a year ago – "Dora the Doormat" and other Scary Straw Women of Complementarity. She provides a Historic Christian Position on Gender in which she explains the following: Continue reading →

To be risen with Christ means not only that one has a choice and that one may live by a higher law – the law of grace and love – but that one must do so. The first obligation of the Christian is to maintain their freedom from all superstitions, all blind taboos and religious formalities, indeed from all empty forms of legalism. -Thomas Merton Folks, when a Christian leader, like John Piper, has to write a post like this, Christianity has gone wacko! The fact that he thinks this is a reasonable post to write is even scarier. I believe that much of the blame can be dumped in the laps of the Calvinistas who seem to have precious little to do with their time since they love to write treatises and go to conferences that pontificate on what women can and cannot do. I contend that complementarianism has been made a primary issue by the Calvinista crowd. Times have changed. Years ago, it did not overly concern me that there were people who believed in a young earth. I subscribed to the CS Lewis philosophy (paraphrased) that people who believe that God has a long white beard will Continue reading →

In the partial transcript of the complementarianism discussion featured in the previous post, it was interesting that John Piper did not remember many details about how "complementarianisim" came into existence. His buddy Wayne Grudem has written a detailed summary of events that led to the invention of this term and theological interpretation of gender roles. Last month we highlighted some of those details, and what follows is an excerpt from that history. (link) Ligon Duncan moderated the panel of three, which included Russell Moore (Al Mohler's protege), Greg Gilbert (who is closely aligned with Mark Dever), and John Piper (who made significant contributions to the Danvers Statement which defines complementarianism). What follows is a partial transcript of some of that discussion that took place in the presence of 7,500 attendees, including pastors and future church leaders. Ligon Duncan: Let me just start by asking Dr. Piper to tell us where the term came from. How can we articulate what the Bible says about this in a term that is not liable to some of the misuses or misnomers. John Piper: I don't have a good memory of the timing, but i can tell you what I remember. Wayne Grudem and I were a part of the production of the Danvers statement, which happened in the late 80s in Danvers, Connecticut, and the Danvers Statement is found…at the Biblical Manhood and Womanhood website in which we tried Continue reading →

While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet her behind the veil. John Taylor Julia R. Boone-In Honor of a Life Well-Lived This post is dedicated to the memory of Julia Boone who is now present with the Lord! Death: where is your victory? Ten years ago, my husband and I began to teach a Sunday school class in a Reformed, SBC church with Mark, who, along with his wife, Joanne, would become dear friends. To be honest, I was a bit startled that Mark was so open to a woman teaching a class of both men and women. He also had a love for Scripture and was well versed in doctrine. The Boones are the most hospitable people we have ever met and we are not exaggerating. We would soon learn that Mark's mother was instrumental in his well- rounded and well-expressed Christian life. I met Julia and began a friendship over our mutual love of church history. In the latter years of her life, she developed a curriculum to teach church history in adult Sunday school classes. However, her advancing years slowed the process. Mark and I will spend time putting the Continue reading →

Archbishop – A Christian ecclesiastic of a rank superior to that attained by Christ. H. L. Mencken Hungry bluebirds about 4 hours after breaking through their shells Did Ambassadors of Reconcilaition wound the wounded? Today, I am deeply irritated by the Ambassadors of Reconciliation report. I always knew that the report would “exonerate” CJ Mahaney and Sovereign Grace Ministries so that business would continue as usual. Bit I never imagined, in so doing, that AOR would utilize the emotional communication with hurting people as an assessment tool. To relay that those who have been hurt are communicating with “clenched fists” is despicable. To this sinful blogger(The most sinful blogger on the planet) it seems as if the pastors were portrayed as so nice and pleasant. The wounded, can you believe it, were portrayed as, get ready for this, still upset! And that is very sinful and bad, I think. Were these supposed “professionals” being cruel, were they naïve, or were they untrained in the art of helping the hurting? Good going, boys. From my view in the moderately priced seats, you appear to have heaped more condemnation on the heads of those already wounded. As you all probably know, Continue reading →
