I Do Not Like Green Eggs and (ken) Ham

“They that approve a private opinion, call it opinion; but they that dislike it, heresy." Thomas Hobbes   Accusation of a Witch-PeabodyEssex Museum Salem MA.   When I first heard about the current Ken Ham fiasco, I thought: karma, kismet, providence, destiny, what goes around comes around, you reap what you sow, and on and on. Then, I confess, there was schadenfreude. For a minute I gloated that someone finally had the good sense to call this demeaning agitator on the carpet. But, then again, one should not take delight in the misfortunes of others, no matter how well deserved. Darn it.   At the end of this post, I will post both the Great Homeschool’s “disinvitation” to Ham and Ham’s response. I will also include a response from Biologos. Please click on the “rest of the story” link at the end of this post to see the letters. I especially thank the Unsettled Christianity blog for providing these letters all in one spot.     So, What’s the Skinny?   Ken Ham’s group, Answers in Genesis, has long held a lock on many of the homeschool conferences and groups in the United States. His materials are displayed and are Continue reading →

Al Mohler’s Young Earth Rhetoric Heats Up

We build fences to keep ourselves from committing certain sins. Soon these fences – instead of the sins they were designed to guard against- become the issue. We elevate our rules to the level of God’s commandments. -Jerry Bridges courtesy of Hubble Telescope   Have you been following the recent internet dialog between Darrel Falk, president of The BioLogos Foundation, and Al Mohler Jr., President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary?   In its December 31, 2010 blog post, BioLogos featured an interesting article entitled “The Dawning of a New Day”, which you can read here. Here is the gist of Falk’s article: “BioLogos and its impact on the evangelical scene was one of the top ten stories of 2010 as judged by both Christianity Today and The Gospel Coalition. This is good, I suppose. However, we have barely begun to deal with the issues in a substantive manner. The reason BioLogos made the “big ten” was because of the hype associated with personal interest stories. Bruce Waltke, the 80 year old much-loved biblical scholar chose to resign from his seminary position over the commotion created by a statement he made about evolution. Albert Mohler, among the most important evangelicals in Continue reading →

Are Ken Ham and AIG Redefining the Gospel and Harming the Faith of Many?

Now if I believe in God's Son and remember that He became man, all creatures will appear a hundred times more beautiful to me than before. Then I will properly appreciate the sun, the moon, the stars, trees, apples, as I reflect that he is Lord over all things. …God writes the Gospel, not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” Martin Luther       A few days ago we got another deep comment from a drive by detractor. Several people tried to engage in a dialogue with “Anonymous “ but he didn’t respond since his only agenda was to make silly comments and disappear. No courage of conviction here, uh uh. Although we believe this was personal and aimed directly at your glamorous blog queens, we think he demonstrated a typical characteristic of abusive behavior that is often seen in some church leaders.   “You gutted ole Ham rather nicely. I mean you left him bleeding. Great job.Once I was in Patterson’s office and like you two he is an avid hunter. I was amazed by the number of animals he had hunted, killed and then mounted. It reminded Continue reading →

Francis Collins, Christopher Hitchens and Al Mohler-For Such a Time

A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere — 'Bibles laid open, millions of surprises,' as Herbert says, 'fine nets and stratagems.' God is, if I may say it, very unscrupulous." – CS Lewis                                                                                                                                                                 Francis Collins On Monday, October 4, 2010, Al Mohler wrote an excellent article for his blog entitled Between the Boy and the Bridge — A Haunting Question.   He dealt with the tragic suicide of a Rutgers student, Tyler Clementi, whose “friends” filmed, without his permission, his gay sexual encounter with another man. They then posted this video for the world to see. Tyler committed suicide soon after. The posting of this video has sparked Continue reading →
