I woke up with a fever, cough, and a stomach thing.  I’m sorry.

Post Cancelled for Tonight — 48 Comments

  1. I never was much good at praying, but my thoughts and wishes for good health go out to you.

  2. Praying for a quick recovery for you, Dee. Don’t worry about the post. Just take care if yourself.

  3. Muff Potter: I never was much good at praying

When someone tells me that they are concerned and thinking about me, they have essentially prayed for me. Just being there brings the comfort of a prayer. Love is powerful.

  4. I have been knocked on my butt with this. The stores do not have the COVID tests and I told my husband I wasn’t going to go and sit around in an ED. I bet I have Omnicron. I can barely move and spend time sleeping with a fever, stuffy nose, and tummy issues. I’m sorry for not communicating. Hoping to do more on Monday.

  5. dee: I bet I have Omnicron.

Very likely. My entire household had it for Christmas – it kicked my but too with very similar symptoms, so I completely understand how you feel. I was miserable and completely worn out. A couple of us got tested at clinics, so we have no doubt about it. Yesterday I was talking with an ER nurse and mentioned we had covid a few weeks ago and she responded with something like, “everybody is getting this.” On the bright side, it does not seem to settle in the lungs like earlier variants.

  6. dee:

    I bet I have Omnicron.

    Ughh. No fun.

My family and I all had COVID a year ago right before the vaccine was available. I have felt worse in my life from a flu type thing once, but I have never felt THAT sick for THAT long. It was a solid 2 weeks before we were back to some semblance of normal.

I hope this passes much quicker for you and that no one else in your family gets it.

    You are in my prayers.

  7. Ken F (aka Tweed),

And yet here is a direct translation of the verse from the Aramaic.
“ 3:7 ¶ AND you, men, dwell likewise with your wives with knowledge, and as feeble vessels in honour hold them; for they also with you inherit the gift of the life of eternity; that you be not hindered in your prayers.”

But back to the point, hope you start to feel better in a few days Dee.

  8. Lowlandseer: And yet here is a direct translation of the verse from the Aramaic.

Whenever there is uncertainty in how a passage should be translated, Calvinists favor the translation that puts women in the worst possible light.

  9. Rest and recharge, Dee. You’ve had a lot on your plate with your mom, the holidays, etc. You are in my prayers. Hope your hubby can arrange to get you tested. Take it easy.

  10. Ken F (aka Tweed): Whenever there is uncertainty in how a passage should be translated, Calvinists favor the translation that puts women in the worst possible light.

    Why is that?
Why does their hatred and contempt for women always seem to percolate up through the layers of their other nonsense?

From the article you referenced earlier . . .

Hebrew Word Study (Aramaic)– Weaker Vessel – Mana Machal מנא מחל

I Peter 3:7: “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.”

The use of the word “weaker” makes more sense when taken in the context of the time, who is writing, and to whom they are writing.

The adjective ‘weaker’ refers to the ‘vessel.” The vessel is the object that holds a substance. The substance itself is not ‘weaker’ or ‘feeble.’ The vessel (body) which holds the substance is or ‘might be’ weaker. This would be an overall, big picture view of men compared to women, but we all know that some women are actually physically stronger than some men.

On a side note, women give birth which is another kind of strength altogether.

  12. dee,

Just take care of yourself, Dee. Take your time ; rest and let your body heal. Drink plenty of fluids, if you can.

  13. Muff Potter: Why does their hatred and contempt for women always seem to percolate up through the layers of their other nonsense?

Is it possible that for the majority of misogynistic actors, the cult of ‘male worship’ is a cover for potentially over-whelming feelings of personal male inferiority that can ONLY be addressed by putting women down?

At least if some of this is true, then there it is: the whole male ‘thing’ (patriarchy) is more an EFFECT of the ‘fall’ in Eden
    THAN
a ‘solution’ to correct the effects of the ‘fall’

is misogyny also as much or more of a curse on the men who practice it than on their poor victims? the male-idolatry?
the practice of abuse? the ‘need’ to ‘control’

    ?

  14. Muff Potter: Why does their hatred and contempt for women always seem to percolate up through the layers of their other nonsense?

I suspect it’s out of weakness and fear.

  15. Bridget: The use of the word “weaker” makes more sense when taken in the context of the time, who is writing, and to whom they are writing.

What I got from the article is the potentially original Aramaic could mean Peter saw much more strength in women than how it is typically translated. Perhaps similar to how the Hebrew word translated as “helpmeet” in Genesis really means something much more like “strong military ally.”

  16. Get some good rest. Don’t rush to get busy the minute you feel a little better – just take it easy.

  17. Ken F (aka Tweed): the Hebrew word translated as “helpmeet” in Genesis really means something much more like “strong military ally.”

Wouldn’t it be great if these alternate renditions could be printed (in new Bibles of the future) alongside each other, thereby letting the reader decide for him or herself what the text means?

  18. Ken F (aka Tweed),

The strange thing is though, the word being discussed almost exclusively refers to household pots and pans, particularly those used in the the service of the Temple. Only rarely will it be used to mean a sailing vessel. The verse translated came from the Peshitta and has nothing to do with Calvin.
And the man who put forward the idea that it was an elaborate metaphor of Peter’s fishing boat doesn’t believe that Peter wrote the book in which the verse is situated and the explanation he uses is nothing more than a modern mish-mash of early East European Hasidism with a dash of Kabbalah thrown in. But that’s another story.
If you all spent your energy Loving your neighbour, or better still, loving the brethren, the world might know that you are Christ’s disciples.

On a personal note I’m listening to “Sermons on the Spiritual Life” by Saint Philaret of Moscow. He would have a lot to say here.

You have no way of knowing that “you all” here don’t love their neighbors and the brethren. You also seem to confuse loving people with loving their theology.

As far as spending energy . . . you spend more energy here than many. It’s interesting that you want us to know that you’re listening to sermons. Maybe that makes you more pious? If so, wonderful for you.

I can see that. This is the translation that I lean toward.

Ad hominem remains a highly respected way to participate in discussions.

Most of the comments on this post are a demonstration of the love they have for Dee, a sister in Christ dealing with an illness.

Sometimes being a disciple of Christ requires us to point out the error of others … it is a form of love.

  23. Dee: LOL, typing into my gardening journal for today’s seed starting of a bunch of cells of Monarda didyma (too cold to sow outdoors in soil, too early for indoor starting, but ‘in tray outdoor cold treatment’ can improve rates of germination), I typed the common name as

    Dee Balm

before correcting the spelling, I offered another prayer that He who cares for things as small as pollinators and pollinated may also strengthen you.

  24. Dee, I’m praying for your healing.Thank you for all you do, but now it’s time to take care of YOU!
