EChurch@Wartburg 6.27.21 Wade Burleson: 7 Sayings From the Cross – First Saying: Forgiveness

A Prayer of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Link

O God, early in the morning I cry to you.
Help me to pray
And to concentrate my thoughts on you:
I cannot do this alone.
In me there is darkness,
But with you there is light;
I am lonely, but you do not leave me;
I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;
I am restless, but with you there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;
I do not understand your ways,
But you know the way for me…
Restore me to liberty,
And enable me to live now
That I may answer before you and before me.
Lord, whatever this day may bring,
Your name be praised.
Amen

A Prayer of Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)Link

O merciful God, fill our hearts, we pray, with the graces of Your Holy Spirit,
With love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.
Teach us to love those who hate us, to pray for those who despitefully use us,
That we may be the children of our Father,
Who makes Your sun shine on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
In adversity, grant us grace to be patient; in prosperity keep us humble;
May we guard the door of our lips; may we lightly esteem the pleasures of this world,
And thirst after heavenly things; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.”

The Nicene Creed link

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Scripture: Luke 23:34 NIV

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Benediction: Jude 24-25 Link

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling
And to present you before his glorious presence without fault
And with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!
Amen.

  1. It’s heartbreaking to contemplate Bonhoeffer…. when they came for him only days before the war ended, I can almost hear him pray, “Father forgive them, even though they know exactly what they are doing.” Those who took him pointlessly to the gallows embodied Anselm’s definition of evil: the absence of good. These things Christ knew only too well.
