Martin Luthers Morning Prayer

I thank you, my Heavenly Father,
through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son,
that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; a
nd I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, t
hat all my doings and life may please You.
For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things.
Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.
Amen.

The Prayer Of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.
Amen

Prayer of Richard of Chichester

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits which you have given us,
for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.
Most merciful Redeemer, Friend, and Brother,
may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly, day by day.
Amen.

Colossians 3:18-21 NIV

Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

A traditional Gaelic blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Amen

  1. drstevej,

    Dee, Wade, Dr Steve, this has been a wonderfully healthy home life activity for me. Far from drawing a blank on “bam”, I find a marvellous range of possible meanings. I see this word in quite a lot of threads. What tends to be meant by it, in this sort of context? And why is there often a numeral before it? I hope it is not “untoward” to ask.

  2. 1 = The first post in the thread.
    BAM = Done with vigor.

    (Been posting this a long time in threads. Just smile or frown as is your preference and post as you intended.)

    I listen every week.Thank you, pastor.

    Re the other…. Always a frown here. Even with vigor, now? Always thinking, “Slam, BAM, thank you, ma’am” brings hurt to the eyes, and ears, and hearts of the sexually abused when “BAM” is seen and used. I just do not get its purpose here..maybe I am alone in this. Maybe it is a generation gap of terminology. Perhaps the BAM poster does not understand. No bother…. I will be OK; I will “cope”, as I always have.

  4. jojo: maybe I am alone in this

    You are not alone.
    However, expect it, see it or not (ignore it), & move on, also works.

    For those who have seen personal violence with abuse, it can be disconcerting. However, it definitely is not meant to be so. Intentions, as well as perceptions, matter.

  5. Technical question:

    While I’ve seen enough of several of Wade’s videos to be grateful, I keep having glitches that bring them to a halt.

    I’ve been using Firefox. Should I use Edge instead?

    Any other tips / hints welcome also.

    Thank you!
