A Prayer of Ambrose (c 339-97) link

O Lord, who hast mercy upon all, take away from me my sins,
and mercifully kindle in me the fire of thy Holy Spirit.
Take away from me the heart of stone,
and give me a heart of flesh,
a heart to love and adore thee,
a heart to delight in thee,
to follow and to enjoy thee,
for Christ’s sake.
In Jesus name,
Amen

The Nicene Creed: An Affirmation of Our Faith link (History)

I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible:

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God;
Begotten of his Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made;
Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made:
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man:
And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried:
And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of the Father:
And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead;
Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life,
Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;
Who spake by the Prophets:
And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church:
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins:
And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come.
Amen.

Scripture Reading:  Luke 22:35-38 (NASB Bible Gateway)

And He said to them, “When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘And He was numbered with transgressors’; for that which refers to Me has its [d]fulfillment.” They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Lord’s Prayer

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen.

(Matthew 6:9-13 KJV)

Benediction link

Go, and know the Lord goes with you.
Let him lead you each day into the quiet place of your heart,
where he will speak to you.
Know that he blesses and watches over you
– that he listens to you in gentle understanding –
that he is with you always, wherever you are and however you may feel.
Amen.

  1. You lost me on this one, Wade. I won’t try to convince you of anything but loose logic. It’s possible taking a “sword” (machomai: a small single-edged bladed instrument) was the equivalent of taking a Leatherman or Swiss Army tool on journey that included no hotels. Second, I can’t think of one person who opposes the selling or carrying of a knife (as they might oppose, say, semi-automatic weapons). Third, in what appears a thinly veiled analogy, there is little comparable about a hand knife and a firearm. A man with a knife will never slaughter a group of people who are able to run. Most important, yes, Jesus divides, but that doesn’t mean we should. Your defense of a false equivalence (that a knife accurately represents all weapons), and anyone who opposes carrying one’s weapon of choice (the implication here is an unspecified firearm) opposes Jesus himself, further deepens the wedge between believers of opposing views on gun control.

    My take on Luke 22:36? Carry that hunting knife, lover of God and people !You’ll be able to defend yourself and others, if necessary; provide food for yourself, cut some sticks for a fire and cook your food. You’re less likely to burden others.
