Breaking -Vision Forum’s For-Profit Arm to Close on Dec 31?

Could the whole enterprise close? Incredible story over at Jen's Gems link.

Typical nonsense. Doug Phillips, the great leader of "gospel" patriarchy leaves questions of sex and money-kind of like the society he condemned. We will be following this as info surfaces. Stay at home daughters are safer-my foot!

Shame on Phillips and those who covered this stuff up.

Update 11:30 AM

According to Patrice's comment below, it appears that there is a major revelation to come early next week.

Breaking -Vision Forum’s For-Profit Arm to Close on Dec 31? — 38 Comments

  1. Good article, well articulated. When it comes to Doug Phillips she knows her stuff. After years of living with the guy and enabling him, I’m guessing Doug’s wife will stand by her man like a good, trained dog. I’m guessing her father will lend his support.

Reading this made me think about Mahaney. The main reason behind Tomczak’s oyster and blackmailing was money, not doctrine. The reason why Mahaney was so guarded and protective of his position atop the pyramid, and why he got rid of those who challenges him wasn’t doctrine, it was money. And reading the article made me think bringing in the AoR was a stall tactic. Mahaney knows he’s corrupt and that the jig was up. Like Phillips, he used that time to focus not on any need for repentance – that’s long gone – but rather what he would do with the assets.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

  2. In Jens’ comments, TW Easton wrote (29th, 9:03am) “By Monday or Tuesday I anticipate posting a story that will likely be a bombshell.”

He also responded (27th, 8:30pm) to a commenter wondering about additional sexual abuse: “I wish I could say that I’m confident there’s only one victim, but I have no such confidence. In fact you should be looking for another related story to be posted here soon.”

  3. So what’s the difference between Doug Phillips, Esq. and the unrepentant Scrooge? Only that Doug Phillips, Esq. CLAIMS to be acting for God – which apparently is enough for too many people to blind them to the reality that there is no real difference between them, they both are motivated by greed. The same goes for all those other charlatans who conduct their scams while claiming it’s ‘Christianity’.

Jeebuz! I just lost my Thanksgiving dinner

  5. @ M. Joy:

    You’re welcome.
Not that it changed my opinion of him. I heard him at a homeschool conf. in the early ’00’s and thought he came across like a slick salesman.

  6. @ Evie:

I’m guessing Doug’s wife will stand by her man like a good, trained dog. I’m guessing her father will lend his support.

Interestingly several of the commenters at Jen’s blog have implied that Beall’s parents are NOT supportive of Doug at all and that he isolated her from her family. At least that’s what it looked like from my scan of the comments yesterday while making stuffing.

  7. @ Hester:

That’s interesting. Who knows, maybe she’ll snap out of it. I’m sure Doug is telling her to sit, and to stay.

    What?

“Mr. Mahaney became pastor of Covenant Life, and Mr. Tomczak took over PDI as its main church planter. Disagreements arose between them over the increasingly Calvinist direction the church was taking…”

Larry Tomczak had this to say:

“…My wife and I finally left PDI (1997) when things finally reached the “untenable” point. It became for us a matter of conscience.  (ed. note: this was prior to the name change to SGM) Disingenuous public statements and letters sent nationwide misrepresented what actually happened and I was publically slandered at Covenant Life Church, called a “liar” (with guests and non-believers present) as the leader declared, “I’d rather be dead than do what Larry Tomczak is doing!” Local leaders were affirmed leading to an almost unanimous standing ovation. My reputation built upon 25 years in ministry, was debased nationally and abroad. My “Seven Reasons for Departing PDI” were not conveyed and for 13 years this perception remained in the public domain, separating our family from many relatives, friends and leaders in the Body of Christ. It also resulted in serious financial repercussions for us as a family of six.”

    *

…Five (of the seven) issues were highlighted at that time:

    1) Pride, Sectarianism and Elitism
    2) Self-righteousness and Judgmentalism
    3) Blackmail and Intimidation
    4) Lack of Integrity and Deceitfulness
    5) Abuse of Spiritual Authority.”

~ Larry Tomczak, In a paper called: ‘An Appeal for Repentance, Reconciliation and Closure.’ he submitted to SGM leaders a year after his 1997 departure from P.D.I.

I would agree that money was ONE of the reasons for Mahaney’s actions but not the only reason. Some other reasons include:

    – Mahaney’s love for power and admiration.
    – Not wanting to admit he was a fake or or lacking in character for so long. (Trying to save his reputation and legacy.)

I really wonder if Mahaney knows he is corrupt. It doesn’t help that he he has all these people around him saying that he really didn’t do anything wrong. I think Mahaney has gone for so long that he really doesn’t think he could do anything wrong.

    I hope not!

The article said it’s not a done deal. I hope they don’t get their own TV show.

I think it was at the root of it. That’s where his else of power lies. That’s what he used to establish an in road at the SBTS. That’s why he worked so hard at convincing people he was so ‘authentic’ – to prevent people from realizing the truth.

I really wonder if Mahaney knows he is corrupt.

“I’m the worst sinner I know.” Sound familiar?

  14. @ Sopwith:
Sophie, of course no one’s going to mention money. That’s too obvious. And right away it reveals whether someone is a hireling or not, no?

  15. About the demise of Vision Forum, the writer of the blog Scarlet letters issues an important warning:

“In the anti-patriarchy blogosphere, of course, Vision Forum’s shuttering will be greeted with joy, as the most important organization peddling patriocentric theology to the evangelical masses has finally and truly gone down in flames. I understand this sentiment, and share it. However, I feel I must issue a word of warning, especially to the more casual followers of anti-patriarchy blogs:

Do not think for a moment that patriocentricity is dead. Vision Forum and Doug Phillips are only one head of that particular hydra. The other heads – Scott Brown, Kevin Swanson, Voddie Baucham, NCFIC, and all the rest – are still very much alive and kicking. Phillips’ organization may be gone, but his lectures and products are still in thousands of homes, and his ideas have permeated entire sectors of the homeschooling community to their core and will continue to perpetuate themselves without the help of the legal entity named Vision Forum. In other words, those of us in the anti-patriarchy blogosphere now face the task of combating patriocentricity without the convenient, easily referenced figurehead which represented it to most of the evangelical public. It remains to be seen whether this will make our job easier, or harder.”

It’s exactly what the world needs. How did we all get along this long without a reality show about Ed “Sexperiment” Young Jr?

If they go through with the show, I wonder if we will be privvy to shots of private jets, mansions, and gilded coffee machines?

Jesus, save us from your professional followers.

Seriously, though, I’m wondering if Ed Young wants Kim Kardashian-style money. Did you know that woman parlayed the publicity from a sex tape into $75 million? But *shudder* what she had to do to get that-No Thanks!

Probably harder. I feel for the women and children trapped in this system, put there by their husbands’ and fathers’ belief systems which *cannot* be found in the Gospels. (There, I said it Russell Moore. Jesus didn’t preach complementarianism or patriarchy.)

  18. @ Retha Faurie:

As long as the effects of The Fall are still in play and we haven’t entered into the New Age, patriarchy will always be seeking to express itself and gain a foothold wherever it can. But a bad tree simply cannot bear good fruit and eventually it will rot. What’s sad to see are all the loyal adherents willfully go down with the ship.

Good points. They money did buy his way into the SBTS.

If Mahaney really thought he was the “worst sinner” he knew then he would have had more accountability and checks and balances. He would have also admitted specific things even before the documents came out.

IMO Mahaney misquoted Paul. I believe Paul was talking about his life before his conversion. The “worst sinner” Mahaney use to use became one of those “badge of honors” a lot of other pastors started using parrotting what Mahaney said.

$ure, I’ll bite as well; give your money to a incorporated non- religious, non-profit, and you expect ‘religion’ to play an integral part in the ‘cosmic’ scheme of things?

When DaCeege re-incorporated PDI, morphing it into da proverbial bestplaze on earth $GM, this left him sole proprietor of a non-religious 501(c) 3 not-for-profit Maryland Corporation.

    No duh?

SGM became, say, for all intent and purposes, his to do with “essentially” as a “sense” of propriety would dictate.

    Pinch it? Pinch it good?

    hmmm…

Religious suckers are born every day in today’s American 501(c)3 corporate ‘business’ climate(s), huh?

  25. This is the most compelling evidence of all that Vision Forum for-profit store is closing. The way I found this was by pretending I was ordering something at the Vision Forum online store. I put an item in the “cart” and clicked on the link to pay and there was a small blurb saying they would not be accepting returns. Beneath that note was another small link that said something like “more details.” I clicked on that small link which led to this page: http://goo.gl/BcwQ6C

They aren’t exactly forthright about this, are they?

  26. I think the most compelling evidence is from the wife of VF warehouse manager on her blog. She posted this over on inashoe.com
    December 4, 2013 at 10:09 am
Thank you, Carrie. It definitely means Perry’s job at VF is ending soon. Of course it’s cause for concern, but we’re very much at peace about it, and now it looks like he has some good temporary work lined up for a few months. We still appreciate all the prayers that have gone up for our family and the many others impacted by this.
