A prayer of Anselm (1033-1109)
The Complete Book of Christian Prayer

O merciful God
Fill our hearts, we pray, with the graces of Your Holy Spirit;
With love, joy, peace patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness,humility and self-control.
Teach us to love those who hate us; to pray for those who despitefully use us;
That we may be the children of Your love, our Father,
Who makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
In adversity, grant us grace to be patient; in prosperity keep us humble;
May we guard the door of our lips; may we lightly esteem the pleasures of this world,
And thirst after heavenly things;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

A prayer attributed to St Patrick: (@470AD) link

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
Afar and near,
Alone or in a multitude.

Christ shield me today
Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.
I arise today
Through the mighty strength
Of the Lord of creation.
Amen

Scripture Reading:  Hebrews 13:10 (NASB Bible Gateway)

We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.

A prayer by Clement of Rome, early church father, 1st century link

We beg you, Lord, to help and defend us. Deliver the oppressed.
Pity the insignificant. Raise the fallen. Show yourself to the needy.
Heal the sick. Bring back those of your people who have gone astray.
Feed the hungry. Lift up the weak. Take off the prisoners’ chains.
May every nation come to know that you alone are God, that Jesus is your Child,
that we are your people, the sheep that you pasture.
Amen

Benediction by Patrick, c.389-c.461 link

"May the strength of God pilot us,
May the power of God preserve us,
May the wisdom of God instruct us,
May the hand of God protect us,
May the way of God direct us,
May the shield of God defend us,
May the host of God guard us against the snares of evil
and the temptations of this world."
Amen

  1. Excellent sermon explaining the chronology of the blood sacrifice on altars from Genesis through to the sacrifice of Jesus!

    I appreciated the reminder to not view symbols such as the cross/crucifix as magical. Also appreciated the reminder that anywhere we worship is a holy place where we can experience the presence of God.

    How very interesting that convicts are allowed to attend church with supervision. That surprised me!

    Thanks again to all for this E-Church blessing!
