This post will take Benny Hinn’s ministry through 2000. We will update his ministry from that point in a later post.

Hinn has claimed to heal thousands of people; however, the proof for such healings is sadly lacking. When Jesus healed the lepers, He told them to go to the priests to verify their healing. Not so with this charlatan. Steve Blow, a columnist for the Dallas Morning news challenged Hinn to prove just one of his healings. Hinn refuses to do so.

Deb here with a true story that involves Benny Hinn.  While the following account happened around six years ago, I remember it VIVIDLY because it was so shocking!  Here it is:

Dee first became aware of the “Health and Wealth” Gospel (hereafter called HWG) when her three year old daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Approximately six weeks prior to the diagnosis, she had read an excellent book called Disappointment With God by Philip Yancey. In this book, he described God’s relationship with the Israelites. He focused on the many miracles God would perform for His people, who would be grateful for a short time. Then they would quickly return to building false idols and whining about their lives.

“The hallmark of an authentic evangelicalism is not the uncritical repetition of old traditions, but the willingness to submit every tradition, however ancient, to fresh biblical scrutiny and, if necessary, reform.”      — John Stott Ever wonder where our contemporary church practices come from? Authors Frank Viola and George Barna in their book Pagan Christianity (Tyndale 2008) take a hard look at the roots of our church practices and traditions. They pose the simple question “how do these [current church] practices square with Scripture and the practices of the first-century church.”  Surprisingly, many of our typical church traditions are rooted historically in pagan practices. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Spencer, the Internet Monk, who is recuperating from surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Welcome to our new blog format. Over the next few weeks we will be developing all of the categories, search helps, and a few permanent pages that should help some of our new readers understand our “invented here” terms such as Calvinista, boutique seminary, and redneck theology. We are open to suggestions for the format and items that you, our dear readers, might find helpful. Thank you for your patience with these two “technopeasants” as we muddle through setting this up.

A TEEN TEACHES WONDERLAND

Here is some background for today’s post.  We at TWW have been blessed to have the friendships of a couple of teens who are regular readers.  We met them due to a deep and close friendship with their parents.  They also are part of the Wonderland story.  If you go to our archives, you can read our “fact or fiction” posts on a dreadful set of circumstances in a “kingdom” far, far away.  This kingdom has done a great job of “blaming” the victims and storytellers and, in so doing, caused some to flee the kingdom and obtain citizenship elsewhere.  Lise is a young woman who saw some events unfold.  She is brave, vulnerable, highly intelligent, and a darn good writer.  She is also currently studying in Europe and comments from there.  Lise, you are incredible!

We thought that our dear readers might find a comment Lise wrote interesting.  Then, an anonymous reader with ties to Wonderland responded.  Lise’s response is poignant. “Anonymous” then chimed in on Christmas night telling Dee to “Chill out” (which was promptly deleted – remember… it’s our blog!)  Anonymous claimed that her own comment was a thoughtful question.  Well, we leave it up to you to decide.  Once again, we thank this individual for providing superb insight into the mindset of Wonderland.

The people in darkness have seen a great light!

Hallelujah!

One of our readers, Junkster, put this lovely poem, written by his mother, in the comment section. It was such a thoughtful poem, we decided to make it a surprise post for today. We know you will find it as thought provoking as we did.

A message to ..well, you know who you are: Lay off the teenagers who were hurt-either by the pedophile or by living through the pain.  Haven’t they been hurt enough? And you seek them out on a blog to continue demeaning them? Egads! Pick on someone your own age. And you wonder why kids leave the faith in college?

Why lies He in such a mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding?

NOTE: We will publish only Monday and Tuesday this week. Merry Christmas to all.

When I first became a Christian, I went to a rather small church. It was in the Boston area and evangelical Christians were in rather short supply. There was Gordon College and Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary but they were tucked away in a small suburb and were easily overlooked in the hubbub of this strong hold of liberal thinking.

The stupid neither forgive nor forget;
the naive forgive and forget;
the wise forgive but do not forget.
Thomas S. Szasz quotes

Breaking News: North Carolina – “A North Carolina judge has ruled that laws limiting a sex offender's ability to attend church are unconstitutional."
According to this article from the Winston-Salem Journal a judge said the statutes infringe on the offender's right to worship. The judge suggested less drastic measures to protect children, including an exception already in the statute that allows offenders to be on school property for a specific purpose.”

Get ready North Carolina!  Pedophiles will be coming to Jesus in droves…

A perceptive reader sent us this quote:  “I will stick with Martin Luther's statement – "I would rather be governed by a competent Turk (a/k/a Muslim) than an incompetent Christian."  (I think I have that right).”  It fits in well with this week's subject matter.

Disclaimer:  Dee wishes to be straightforward with our readers. She and her husband have, and will continue to be, supporters of the former governor of Arkansas.  They have financially contributed to his campaign, helped host a dinner for him during the primaries, and have a cherished picture taken with him.  This post is not meant to be a criticism of the governor.  Or, if it is perceived that way, then it is a criticism that can be applied to Dee as well.  Mike Huckabee is a decent man and we like him very much.

“Nine years ago, then governor Huckabee, commuted the sentence of Maurice Clemmons who had been convicted in 1989 of robbery and theft, and he was serving a 108-year prison term when Huckabee commuted it to 47 years in 2000, making Clemmons eligible for parole”.   As many of our readers know, about a month ago, Clemmons shot and killed four police officers in the state of Washington and was finally killed himself

As you might surmise from the title, this series is going to cover a lot of ground.  Believe it or not, there is an underlying theme that links these subjects. This theme has to do with an underlying naïveté that affects all of us.  How many have heard these types of comments in Christian circles?

As we wrap up our coverage of Coral Ridge’s new pastor, we have to wonder one thing – just how transparent was Tulllian Tchividjian with the Pastor Search Committee as well as the leadership of the church?  Did they know about the colleagues with whom he associates?  He is certainly being transparent on his blog in promoting them along with their books!  (You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours…)   Although Coral Ridge has a strong reformed tradition, is Hyper-Calvinism the direction in which the members now want to go because that’s where the church is heading and in a hurry!

First there was the Rainbow Coalition, founded by Jesse Jackson in 1984.  Then we had the Christian Coalition organized in 1991 by Pat Robertson.  Now we have the Gospel Coalition established by Don Carson and Tim Keller in 2007.  When the average person hears the word “coalition”, this will likely be their thought pattern…

Sorry guys!!!  During the rush of the Christmas season, your humble blog queens have fallen down on the job BIG TIME!!!  Conducting exhaustive research is one of our hallmarks, and we have failed you in our investigation of Tullian Tchividjian.  We were about to move on to another topic until Dee providentially discovered some extremely interesting information on the internet late last night.

We assumed that what happened at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church was just a misunderstanding between a new pastor and his congregation.  After all, the Sun-Sentinel stated on January 19, 2009, that “Tchividjian was cautious about discussing any changes he might make at the helm of Coral Ridge”

It’s time for one last look at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church before we move on to other important topics within Christendom.

In the Christianity Today article we cited last week:

“Faith is not simply a patience that passively suffers until the storm is past. Rather, it is a spirit that bears things – with resignations, yes, but above all, with blazing, serene hope.”

Just nine months ago, the members of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church joyfully chose their new pastor – Tullian Tchividjian, one of Billy Graham’s seven grandsons.  No doubt the congregation was thrilled that a Graham legacy would propel the church into the 21st century.  What could possibly go wrong?

Here was the breaking news in the August 11, 2009 edition of the Miami Herald.

We’re heading to South Florida for three days as we focus on a church that has gained a national presence – Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church.  As most of you probably know, Coral Ridge was founded by D. James Kennedy.  On May 22, 1960, Kennedy began the church with a congregation of 45 people in an elementary school auditorium.  Kennedy is well-known for his development of the "Evangelism Explosion" ("EE") method of evangelism in the 1960s.  This method emphasizes the training of church laypeople to share their faith by home visitation in the community.
